Hello 👋
Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

Absolutely brilliant sam. One of your. Your drone work is excellent. Silage looks excellent. Sheep will do well on it next winter. You are one heck of a woman. just superb, congratulations on baby Shelia. the family foto at the end is great, and is perfect for the family, looks like you will have plenty of feed for stock this winter, how many cuts will you get 2 or 3. hope Oliver is making you take family time to rest yourself helps no one if you start back too early and suffer a set back. Enjoy baby time while you can. how many bales did you guys do in one day that looked like a lot of work

I've had 5 days rest now. Feels strange! But enjoying it. We made 350 bales that day. So we've 550 stacked down there now. That was first cut on the rented land and we do 2 cuts. If we can try buy some fert to put on.. at home we get 1 cut make around 1000 bales a year

That last bit. There was a bit of grit in my eyes. This old fart from Suffolk has a bit of a soft side. As an aside, can you do something about the weather up there? We're heading up to Scotland tomorrow across the A66 so not that far from you, ish.

Sometimes, when Oliver's baling, he backs up a few yards and drops the bale a bit off to one side rather than just dropping it out where he is when the baler's full: why is that please?

Kids are loving Sheila ❤️ they cried when I tolled them a new one is coming so been a long wate. Yes my mum was my birthing partner. None of this farming life would be possible without her. So we called her Sheila after my mum 🥰🥰🥰
