Nice video, my two cents is that volume should always be a starting point guide but I find every board model varies where it gets to a point where their scaling up factor no longer works and boards becomes boats and not worth buying, ie too wide to turn for rail length and rail too thick to bite into the wave sufficiently. Volume as a number is important for flotation and therefore paddling. To me, other main considerations for paddling is the distribution and the rocker as a flatter board or a board with more foam towards the nose of the board will glide easier reducing the reliance on volume. I’m 40yrs, 105kg and 5’11”. I ride east coast Oz waves and find that a volume around 36L works best for me for daily & performance shapes (JS Xero & Raging Bull, Tomo Hydroshort & Pyzel Ghost). I go down 1-2L for low rockerered fish and grovelers (JS Red Baron & Lost Couch Potato) as typically there is less water movement or current on small days and because they “glide” better when paddling and also fit smaller wave pockets better. I also go up in volume 1-2L if there is lots of water moving or a strong current or if my paddle fitness is currently down.

at 200lbs/90kg, I have a similar issue. I have been running an ongoing experiment buying and selling used shortboards, and found that 36-38L works for both grovel/fish and daily drivers. Usually my fish is 5-10 and my Daily is 6-2. HP Shortboards are usually lower volume at 6-2, and this works in more powerful waves and perfect conditions while also lowering wave count. Increasing HP shortboard size helps but becomes more difficult to duckdive..kind of bordering mid-length territory. To to solve this I just got a Daily Driver with more pulled in nose and roundpin tail. So far, so good. Not as fast or lively as a ghost, but catches more waves and works in overhead waves.

Ron house/laird 10' has volume to get me into 5-6 sunset...but the speed and control to navigate the roaring train of that powerful foam ball

Scot, thanx for the heads up, really informative for the bigger guy and anyone wanting more volume . I’m 5.11, 59 y/o and 98ks . 20 years down the line and still looking for “that” board, my mojo has been up “n” down like a yo-yo and I’m half way through selling 5 x longboards in order to get a shorter, high vol flyer. So that Pyzel looks pretty inviting. 7’ would be better, but 6.6 .....I can live with that. Thanx again

Position of the widest point for older surfers is also a big factor, (older surfers tend to have more emphasis on the front foot, because of the boards they grew up with). Volume under the chest (as you have stated), is extremely important. The body distribution of each individual is seldom taken into consideration regarding foil, or bone density, (90 kgs is not 90kgs if the bone density is quite different). As you have also rightly stated, a high volume board does not need to be corky, if the foil/template is correct, especially the tail. Often the new machines just completely get it wrong when the model is lengthened, the foil gets too much rocker and the nose too thin. Mass production and reproducability are what machines do.... but only in a certain variation in length, then the algorithims go bonkers!

The back end -20-30 INCHES UP can be bumped in 1 inch on each side reducing volume in the back so you can push the tail underwater. The front can be wider .Shapers do not make big guy professional short boards Tails are too wide to be pushed underwater. especially epoxy boards

Do you have punchy waves where your at ? For a guy 230+ 37 liters is bare bones for all around .. seems like you would be paddling under water 🤔

Waves are pretty weak here. Most volume calculators recommend around 38L for an advanced surfer of my size. That's only a guide though, and I only use volume as a starting point now when looking at boards. Other factors can also effect how a board paddles or generates speed. I'm finding less volume is working for me, but it's such a personal thing. You just need to go with what works for you.

Big Guy Boards Surfboard Review Ya if that works then it works! What I was saying in most less that average surf conditions. I think that would be on the lower spectrum of volume for a 6 4” short board at a guy your size. I think in punchier or larger surf that would work though and a good surf break would help too..cool you have any vids of you surfing ?

@@robhernandez1827 not yet with videos but working on it. It would definitely be benifical for viewers to see me surfing. Give some reference to what I'm talking about. As I allude to in my reviews, I'm no ripper. Just an average surfer with a few years experience. Regarding volume: My 6'4 (uber XL) is 43L. I've been experimenting with less volume on my grovel and high performance boards.

Unless you're a shit hot surfer the boards you ride aren't classed as big guy boards for the average person.
