In THIS video I show the final glaze results of the finished fired pieces. I made the original video to help prepare my Ceramics students to glaze their pieces at the end of the semester. They were able to see the finished pieces in person.

I used what we use in the classroom, which is our Coyote brand stoneware glazes (cone 5 and 6 midfire) on our Standard 153 stoneware, a nice midrange firing stoneware. Since this video I stopped using that clay body and switched to Standard 125, a replacement clay body which has a smaller firing range to be vitrified at cone 6..

I had a terrible art teacher in high school who made me feel very inadequate and discouraged when it came to art. He wouldn't give us any creative freedom and if you asked to try something he would doubt you and not offer guidance. His instruction was always tinged with a tone of annoyance and condescendence. Because my partner is a ceramics artist I have rekindled my relationship with art as an adult and we now have a full on ceramics studio in our home. Watching your videos is like getting the art education I always wish I had. Your students are lucky to have you and you are so kind to upload your content for everyone.

I am sorry you had a negative experience. That just makes me sad when I see kids stifled. My goal is to give the kids a little interest, and a little bit of passion so they will always have an appreciation of the media, even if they never touch it again!!

Very clear, informative, and helpful - thank you. I have to say though (not your fault!) that the names these glaze companies use are downright embarrassing. And commercial glazes somehow always look like commercial glazes, which must have to do with their composition for stability, firing range, etc.. I try to formulate my own.

I just wanted to say thank you, for providing so much useful information! I just started taking pottery classes this January, for the first time. I"m 53 years young. The instructor I have is lovely. But, he's not always the best at explaining things in layman's terms. I got a lot out of your Part 1 glazing video. I'm here now to see how the pieces turned out. Hi JoEllen- they’re Coyote- you can order directly from Coyote or through a supplier. I most often purchase through my local supplier- Cornell Studio Supply. I follow the Coyote program on their website- fire to cone 5 with a 25 min hold!

Karan, I love your videos. Please tell me what tape did you use to make your design on the outside of your pots. Was this the tape you used with whiteboard on your amazon website? Thanks again, I really appreciate these videos because I am a would be potter!! At 78 I am really enjoying taking pottery classes, mostly handbuilding, at my local community college. It is actually therapy for me especially because we are in the middle of a pandemic.

I love your videos. I'm a recently retired pre-school teacher finding my way around my newly found ceramics hobby. Hand building at the moment, and I purchased a small 8x6 Skut firebox to fire my smaller pieces. Lots to learn. Thank you for the great and informative videos. I've been quarantining with you. Question: when my glaze doesn't come out as I like, is there a method to re-glazing and re-firing a piece? I've heard putting hairspray on a vitrified piece before applying another layer of glaze helps keep the glaze from slipping off. Is that a myth? Will you demonstrate some multiple re-firings of works, please? Thank you!

Thank you so much for this video! This was SUPER helpful. I am a beginner potter experimenting with glazes. I made egg cups off the hump specifically to test glazing. I wish I found this video earlier before I did my first lot of glaze testing, which I will pick up from the studio tomorrow to see how they turn out. Must throw more to try out some of your method!

I may have missed it in a previous video but what type of clay are you using? I know you said it was "grogged" but I didn't hear what kind? I'm starting a refresher course next month as I haven't thrown or fired anything since college (+20yrs) but I want to eventually make stoneware "style" pieces like the discontinued Monroe Saltworks pieces. (I live in Maine and my friend's Mom worked there and designed & made the raven series, I have most of the Collection but can't replace broken pieces. She has shown me the patterns and I'm going to try to recreate similar pieces to add to my collection🥴.) The studio I'll be at uses BMIX 5 and Laguna #60 stoneware. No red clay bodies, and fires to Cone 5 in 2/10cuft electric kilns.
