Thanks very much for both recording your rebuild and then posting. Extremely helpful and saved me a $900 bucks. Thanks to you, Tuff Torq and a few other sources, I was successful. If I can do it, anyone can.
I didn't see it mentioned in the comments yet, but you can use a dab of grease on those pins to held hold them in place. Thank you for sharing your work on the K46.
Thanks for making this video..........I was able to rebuild mine easily with your help. It took about 15 minutes to do the re-bleed process w/ back wheels up in the air. shifting from forward to reverse slowly w/ low idle.
Glad to be a help. The folks at Tractorbynet really helped me so I am happy to give back. Tuff Torq also stood by their product and we're cvery helpful. Good luck.
Thanks for going through the trouble of posting this. Just finished my rebuild. That small pin is a PITA. I held it in place with a dab of grease. I had to remove the cover after finding one of the "U" washers on the axle turned 90 degrees. Put the cover on and the shaft wouldn't turn. All in all, pretty straight forward. Thanks again.
Nice try, but you left the motor washer off of your new motor. In fact, its typical for this washer to stick to the old motor surface by oil - so I'm sure its still on the bottom of the old motor that you placed face-down on the paper towel. I would imagine that the transaxle may still work without this, but the washer is there to give the correct tolerance from the center case. Expect this to wear out much quicker without it.
Thanks for the video. I just got mine apart and never saw where that little pin came from when it fell out. So your video showed me where it goes. Also, the comments on the washer were great, because I didnt' know to look for it, and now I do. Off to order the parts. Thanks.
Thanks for posting your helpful unedited video. Please don't be disheartened by the negative comments some users have made who expect RU-vid videos to be Hollywood quality... Next, they'll expect 3D so they can see even better and hit you with thumbs down when it's not. I RU-vid would allow you to delete these irrelevant comments from the comment section.
My pleasure. I had to do the same with mine to pressurize the drive. I was going to do a third video on how to bleed the drive and put it back in but have been too busy mowing the lawn ;)
For those of you looking for parts you will more than likely have to go to the turf torq service website at www.tufftorqservices.com/instance1EnvEELogin/html/login.html. Follow the links to view and buy parts. You will need to look up your transaxle model number and may need to call the manufacturer of your mower to determine your axle series. Once you know that you can look directly at the trans-axle breakdown and find the parts you are looking for. As an example my transaxle is a k46v second series. You can see the parts list and breakdown here: www.tufftorqservices.com/instance1/servlet/WebDispatcher?mode=comnet&nextMode=&nextURL= . I heard mention that someone could not get parts. You may need to verify directly with Turf Torq. As I mentioned in a post a couple years ago Turf Torq was immensely helpful when I called them. As for replacing other parts outside of the pump and motor I would consult with Turf Torq.
@anthony flacke. I Finally sent my my John Deere Sabre down the road along with the K46 in it. Happy to say my new JD X710 has a tuff torq hydro in it. When they took the old one away they drove it onto the trailer. My house is built on a knoll so the Saber and k46 took a beating on the hills around the house and it lasted 12 years.
I did not have mine either. You need your manual for your mower. My machine has a k46v listed as the part in the manual. 1: go to tufftorq.com 2: click on 'parts & service". 3: next click "view and buy parts here' 4: next click "catalog shop" 5: next click "'hydrostatic" 6 You now have to find the base part number (e.g k46 for my mower) I clicked on it. 7: The next screen has all the variation of the k46. I had to find the k46v once I found it the number is under the description microfiche too
If you look in the past comments I have a listing of parts I bought and where to purchase them from. I also have the forum listed that I used originally to take this on. I replaced both pump and drive as the cost of parts was on $170 US. I did not get into a complete diagnosis. Read through all the past comments and that will get you started on the repair.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you forget to put on the washer on the bottom of the motor? I believe it was still attached/stuck to the bottom of the old motor.
the smaller block sits on the pumpshaft and the larger block rides against the housing. its hard to get it back in without a small clamp but it is possible
if you have a simplicity regent, the wedge shaped bearing block must be put in with wide end down, if not, foot controls will work in reverse, i speak from experience.
Is that wedge reversible? I just put a used k46 out of a john deere into my husqvarna and my foot pedals are reversed. I'm wondering if I can just flip that wedge.
In removing the pump, motor housing the IDS valves came out. I found the springs and valves but no ball or filter. I can't tell by the diagram if one has a ball or both and if one has a filter or both. I'm stuck till I find this out. Thanks
I have a Craftsman 54" cut with a piece of junk K46 trans. I noticed one of the axles leaking along with the mower had slowed down a lot. I took the trans apart replace the axle bearings along with went through the trans, looked brand new and had nothing on the magnets so I changed the fluid to 5w 50 synthetic and put it back together and it only worked for about 20 feet and then stopped moving so I parked it. Last month I found a check ball in my driveway and remembered that this fell out of the side of the pump, thought I put it back in but I guess I didn't. I contacted Tuff Torq and they tell me that there are no check balls with the springs with the flange at the end they have filters. I give up unless somebody can help me out on this. Thanks
Thanks for sharing this was extremely helpful in fixing my mower. Question for you. Do you believe it to be possible to have streched the transmission drive belt on the mower? When I removed it? When I put it back together there was so much slack in the line that it won't drive the pulley.
I have watched a couple of these videos. And once or twice I have heard people say the reason why these things fail is because the oil gets low or it gets dirty. Now if that is true why not find a place on the unit . Where you can drill and tap you some threads and put a plug. And change the oil in it , when you change the engine oil. I was thinking if that would work , with a little extra work you could put a dip stick on the unit. A couple of brass fittings some flexable copper tubing and rod to check the oil level.
***** I said I had watched a couple of these videos showing how to rebuild the trans. What I was attempting to get at is, with a little extra work you could set this up and be able to change out the trans. oil / fluid as needed. In my dealing I some how ended up with two used riding mowers with the hydro. trans. So far they have given me any trouble.
Thanks for posting this series. I tried to order parts however and on step 3 above I get an error message because "Please note that we do not have parts distributors in the United States. If you need a service center to repair your machine please contact the dealer network for your brand of lawn equipment." What good is NAFTA then? Grrrrrrrrr. I have to go through John Deere- they only want to sell the whole trans for $700-$1500
I am not sure where the model is. This is a good question. I honestly don't remember seeing it. I would get int there an look for it. It may end up being a sticker I seem to remember seeing it on a sticker somewhere. If it fell off you could call Turf Torq. They were very helpful and might help you identify it.
where did you find parts tor the transmission? the axle snapped on mine and I remover the axle and when I went to the dealer to buy a new one I was told that the transaxle is sold as a unit and that the axles are not available..
Hey punch your eye hole, great video. Its given me some confidence to try the repair out as my local dealers say complete replacement is the only option (at huge cost). I have no drive at all (it was lost slowly over a month or two). If there is a hydraulic pump, there must be a hydraulic drive motor too. How can I establish what has failed before I order parts, and where did you get your parts from? My transaxle is a K46E (Uk) from a countax C300H ride on mower. Many thanks, David
Hate to be a pain but I contact tuff torq and they stated that they have to have the numbers on the tag located on the transmission but mine is worn off but is the exact one that it in you video. Could you supply any info. you can so I can order a rebuild kit. PS: if you purchased your rebuld kit from sokmebody other than tuff torq and if so would appreciate that info. also. Thanks Hugh Bunyea
PURGING THE DRIVE: Place vehicle's drive axle on jack stands with wheels off floor. Start engine and operate at low idle speed. Repeat opening and closing bypass (tow) valve while alternately depressing forward and reverse pedal(s). When vehicle starts to move, increase engine speed. Repeat quick starts and panic stops until transaxle gives full response. Remove jack stands while placing vehicle's wheels on floor.
Someone asked about buying parts some place else. I hate to do buy anything off of ebay but they had the whole unit , looked like it was ready to bolt back on $500 plus ship.
Do you know how to replace the brake lever on the K46? I'm having difficulty with the tension spring. I had to take parts of off one K46 and add to another K46 so it would work on my daughters mower.
Great vidieo's, very helpful. Im getting ready to do the same job on a K46BN. its good to see whats going on and what to expect when i get this open. just wondering, how often is an oil/filter change required in these units?
adam03110 Adam, Not sure it is required all that much. For example my k46v has no drain plug. Changing it would require me to pull the drive. If however your's has a drain plug and you do a lot of hill mowing. It is probably not a bad idea. My property has a significant amount of steep grades so my trans-axle takes a beating. I would check you owners manual or call a dealership. Cheers!
Great video. I have a 2003 John Deere G100 with a bad transmission. I have located the parts list for the K66c transmission. Where did you purchase your parts from? I looked at your previous posts and saw the parts but not where you got them. Thanks.
Great video! where was the model numbers located on your transmission? I have a lawnchief riding mower that was given to me by my grandpa and he had put a John Deere hydro-static in it and I am trying to find the model number of the transmission but I don't know where to look, any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I just got my parts from Tuff Torq for my K46C. Cost with shipping and tax was $400. Can you take the bottom cover off without parts falling out? I want to pull it off to get all the old oil out. How much oil goes back in?
hi i got a spacer that looks like a square but the bottom cut out and the ends of that are outwards there is one of these on the big gear and the other one came out and i dont know where it goes i was wondering if you could tell me where it goes
I noticed in your video you said the cylandar block looked small! Did you get 2 blocks or just the one cause that transmission does use 2 a 7cc and a 10cc. Hope all is well with your transmission
Thanks Mike. Been running great for last three years (knock on wood). Just mowed yesterday for 4 hours. i did order two parts a pump and motor based on my transaxle part number.
Sorry for the late reply. Go to tuff toq's website tufftorq.com and follow the links for parts and service. You'll find what you looking for if you haven't already.
lol you're obviously not a mechanic by trade. But you did ok. Just make sure to let people Know next time that you made a mistake and put the fan on top of the pulley instead of he other way around. Plus, it's easy to remember where everything goes such as the fan and pulley of the washer that fell, by simply taking some photos before you take things off.
You should have seen a caption in the video pointing out the reversal along with a suggestion to check the drawings at turf torq. Damn DIY guys with go pro cameras.... ;) Taking pictures is a good suggestion.
I bought a L110 from a guy and the trans had been worked on and the fan was actually on top of the pulley, I was looking for one like that one with the pulley under the fan until I saw a print and only then did I know it was installed wrong
Additionally if you want even more info there are a lot of people willing to help. Join "tractorbynet". The forum has a lot of really good advice and people willing to help. to get to the forum: Do a search in your favorite search engine on the following: "164892-tufftorq-k46-repair-guide-pictures" A member by the name of LotsOfGreenGrass started this thread and was instrumental in helping me to take on the repair. Last I checked he and others are still providing advice and guidance.
went to the tuff torq website and i have a k46ia trans and they did not have that model. do you think its alright to use the parts from a k46ac trans instead?
