I chuckled when you turned away while snapping the e-clip into place. I was thinking, she won't even know which bench to look under to find that clip if it goes flying!
The pre m tronic stihl chainsaws ms 240 , 260 , 360 , 361 , 044 , 440 , 460 , 461 , 660 , 880 are probably some of the best saws ever made , if looked after they run forever
I have an MS 361 with nearly 20 years of work time on it. This was a very welcome video, to guide me on the rehab of my saw. You're very thorough. Much obliged!
I’ve had my 361 for almost 20 years as well. Been a great saw overall and have never regretted buying it. It’s sat for long periods sometimes, but has always started without fail. Like this saw, it has seen minimal maintenance, just basic stuff like a good cleaning occasionally and blow out the filter. Still has the original plug and original 25” bar. I dress the bar when it needs it and keep a sharp chain on it. I did upgrade mine to the twin spike setup and roller chain catcher. Well worth the cost and I’ve never regretted it.
Nice video. That's a testament to how good these saws are. 20 years and hardly anything done to it. When I'm done sawing, I always blow out all the sawdust everywhere on the saw and it looks like new. John from MI
Great end to a awesome series Erica. As a Sthil mechanic myself, it's great see saw videos as I usually do equipment related to golf course / turf maintenance..
Ive been around cheap saws my whole life cutting wood picked up a couple of used sthil saws last summer, after watching your videos i would have no fear taking one apart and repairing them myself to keep them going very informative excellent videos!!!! thank you!!
You have a neat and well organised shop. I like the way your work area is free of clutter. I also like that you don't risk stripping and cross threading fastners by using power tools to reassemble equipment. You are the most professional small engine mechanic that posts on RU-vid.
Hi! Thank you so much for the comment. I am told multiple times an hour that I should be using an impact - impacts have their place - working on this chainsaw isn't one of them. I much prefer to use hand tools, as Stihl requests and as I was trained. I think it's also more enjoyable to watch! Who wants to listen to my impact! :)
@@marriedwithsmallengines A long time ago I watched a great mechanic going backwards on a screw into a plastic part so it would fall back into it's original threads. I immediately understood what he was doing and adopted the technique. I see you have learned this trick too.
Loving your videos I feel like a master Stihl tech after watching them. These are some of the best chainsaw repair videos I have seen on here. I'm going to have to show my saws a little more love.
Greetings from New Zealand, new subscriber to your ch. I watched both parts of this repair and think you do a great job. We are home mechanics - did a diploma in auto mechanics in my teens - and yes machines do need some TLC and a well designed and built machine will give years of sterling service. You have done just that. Cheers!🐞
Open the muffler a good bit and lower those rakers. Looked more like dust than chips.... but i guess thats why it ran 20 yrs😊 But it looked to run very well....
Nice save! I’m sure the owner will be happy to have it back to new condition. Just pulled my three saws off the shelf and gave them a clean. I would have been embarrassed if you had to work on them.
Because of the hold and slide problems working on saws, I put in a couple of fold down utility rings so I could use a bungee cord (flat black rubber kind) to hold the saw. I put in 4 hold downs on my bench.
I’m glad the owner decided to repair the saw. Good decision! My saw is a 24 year old Solo 645 with a 16 inch bar. It too still has the original plug! Been a great saw. I also have a STIHL MS 181C. It’s a good saw too. Really enjoying your videos, very interesting and informative! Thanks! 🇦🇺🍺🍺
I use to have that model and it was my favorite saw. My other favorite saw was the MS200T. Both saw were awesome to use. I had several other Stihl saws, but those to were always my go to saws after I used them and realized how great they worked for me cutting fire wood. Great videos!
Yep, pretty cool. He should still buy a new saw, though. Keep it as a back up. The 500i is way cool but those electronics and FI gotta be very expensive to replace..... I gotta get my muffler fixed. At 52, it doent regulate like before😢.........😂😂😂
I really don't want to be negative. I noticed U do not wear safety glasses. I have two friends that both lost an eye while not wearing safety glasses. One had to stop driving semis due to not being able to pass the medical exam peripheral vision portion due to being monocular. The second fella was an iron worker who had to stop working as an iron worker. He now works as a shop welder. Best to protect yourself .. that said.. great job repairing the saw.👍
Great job Erica! Enjoyable to watch, clear and concise explanations and we got the part numbers too! I don't like throwing things away that can be fixed either.
I just started watching your videos. Very informing. Your step by step procedures are what people like to see. I have a 20 inch Farm Boss MS271 Stihl brand new. Cutting the first tree I knicked a nail which wore some tips on the chain! Would you recommend replacing the chain or try filing the new chain?
You should be able to sharpen it! Find your first tooth, count how many file swipes it takes to bring it back to a point, then sharpen the rest to match! Get yourself a Stihl 2N1 file sharpener! They are fantastic!
I would have got you to fix the saw too! I would want to give the job to you. It is like you say (way more satisfying to fix than buy a new one). Thanks for these educational videos!
I have a 361, excellent saw. Those mufflers are really choked up stock. I think you can buy opened up replacement mufflers today online. Also, a little bit of dieclectric grease around the perimeter of the air filter keeps fine sawdust particles out of the carb. Great video👍
I use the same gas tanks, I'm not in love with them but they do work good. I bought extra spouts because one went bad at the O ring. Now that saw started very easy. About 12 years ago I bought a new stihl chainsaw and it was the professional one but for the life of me can't remember the number on the side. Back then one could buy the case for it.
Replacing the carb with new is the only way to go on an old saw like this. New replacement will make it run like new. The new OEM cap for the oil tank has a better design than the original cap did on the MS460. Looking forward to the MS460 video. Waiting to see the MS460 video before doing the fuel line replacement
awesome video! love when people take care of their machines and get them repaired instead of buying new! what was the actual cost of the repair/service?
You have all the proper stihl tools and knowledge to complete these jobs except the most important ONE! SAFETY GLASSES! I see you move away from the work and look away when doing the difficult stuff. Cover the most important asset you have, your eyes! Even a fuel splash will ruin your day! Trust me, fuel in the eye burns, small plastic and metal pieces in the eyes will always happen on a Friday afternoon when the ophthalmologist will not see you until Monday! It is the longest painful weekend of your life. Hospitals won’t help you unless bleeding from the eye! Ask me how I know! Edit. I just heard you say it at minute 20. I was writing while watching
Those T-handle drivers will develop a lot of windup energy when loosening fasteners and when they break loose that energy is sent straight to your wrist. Might think about getting a 1/4" speed handle and some bits for teardown cause you don't want to damage the wrist. You check the drags on that chain? Chips looked a little small.
I don't even own a chainsaw, but I have had my share along with ride on John Deere mowers. Love your videos! would it be easier if you had some kind of removable rubber matt or non slip surface for you to work on ? I can see myself getting frustrated chasing that saw all over the counter trying to work on it. 🙂 other than that you have my respect for your mechanical abilities that I do not possess. Keep up the great work young lady.
Now you can do the work, and I can do the work the chain saw owner should be able to. And that chain saw is better metal than the same model for sale today.
About an epoch ago, I picked up a single cell (4.2 volt) cordless drill driver from Ryobi. Got a clutch and a lite. Don't you think something like that would be useful to you? You're turning a lotta T-27s.
They are really nice saws. Glad u were able to get it all fixed up. Do you happen to know what type of premix he was using? Getting 20 years and a clean low carbon cylinder is pretty good. Didnt look like stihl oil to me when you dumped the gas.
Thank you for showing the parts #. Many years ago in Minnesota, I worked at a Johnson/Evinrude outboard, McCullagh chainsaw dealer. All the parts numbers were in filing cabinets on index cards. You would start out to find the parts number is superseded by ####, The next card same message. After going thru many cards you would find the last card with the message part # NA. Can we spell frustration?
Your videos are great and you know your business for sure But as we age you should think about a lower bench and chair, possibly a stool, not being a smart ass but I know from standing 😮
Great observation! Being that is a new OEM walbro carb, I would generally only check it if there was a running issue. Zama carbs are where I see more issues. They are very sensitive to metering lever height.
Great job. I have ms661. Do you know where I can buy front and back av. I've searched around and they are only available out of Germany and could not sent to my US address
Hi! Yes, It's good practice to flip your bar regularly to promote even wear. That is why they write the printing the same on both sides - so the user knows if they have flipped it. Thanks for watching!
Do you have an email associated with your business. You were kind enough to respond to my statement in which I wish I could spend a week their because I could ask 100 questions. Just curious I didn't want to ask you so many questions on this platform so others can speak as well. Thank you again for responding. Take care ma'am.
Some saws have spur sprockets (solid) and some saws, such as this one, have a rim sprocket ( easier and less money to replace on larger saws). I didn't catch it on film, but I lubricated the needle bearing, I checked the clutch springs, I greased the bar tip, I checked the chain brake band thickness among lots of other things. Thanks for watching and Happy Easter!
