In my many years of experience with evo and twin cam, Johnson Lifters made all quiet! No exceptions!

that is not always true. its just these days that they seem to have less problems thatn the other brands. johnson does make more than one kind of lifter. why is that, if they are perfect. tatro

If you had a drill press , and a small vice , you could use the vice to hold the lifter and chuck the push rod up in the chuck and use the push rod adjustment a little at a time to bleed the lifter piston down to just get the snap ring in the top of the lifter , or set the lifter in the motor block and do the same thing with the push rod adjustment , after filling the lifter body half or more with oil and fill the piston all the way full of oil , then bleed the piston down with the push rod just enough to force the snap ring in the top and no further, its the only way to bleed every bit of air out to the point of pressure , and you can not bleed a lifter by hand it takes pressure , how much steady pressure does a valve spring have . Late 60`s and on , Some lifters adjust on zero , some 1 turn down from zero , some so many thousands off the bottom , we use to adjust 350`s 1 and 2 turns off the bottom more vacuum you could really hear that old quadrajet then , years ago you put the lifters in adjusted them and done . The point is >>>>> no matter how you adjust the lifters as long as they have a small amount of travel they are suppose to bleed and hold pressure enough to keep the slack/pecking from happening , thats what they are made for , ( without doing what I had to do above to get mine to work) Tatro has proven beyond any doubt how defective lifters act and how many are out there ............

I am kinda tempted to pick up a 1998-2003 sportster xl1200s sport. It came stock with hotter cams, bumped up compression, dual spark plug heads, adjustable front and rear suspension and dual front discs brakes. Seems like a decent machine. Any thoughts on this motorcycle, Tatro or anyone?

Hey Tatro, what do you think about just removing the travel limitesr from the S&S lifters??? I have just finished restoring my FXR with 10:1 wiseco pistons and a EV46 cam, so nothing to wild im just waiting on new carb inlet fittings so havent started it up yet . I bought new S&S lifters with the travel limiters as i was recommended to do, but i have since found that i didnt need these travel limiters and that they seem to be a noisy pain in the arse and difficult to adjust correctly. So im considering to just remove the travel limiters and use them as stock S&Slifters, You think that could be a good option??? Also do you have mikuni HSR42 carbs for sale?

the s&s lifters are all the same. you can have the limiter or not. sometimes i use them and sometimes i don't. i don't sell parts on youtube but yes i have all three sizes instock. just call or email me your needs. tatromachine@cox.net tatro

So what's a person to do? Keep sending them back until you ge a good set? If I'm correct, soaking them does no good either?

you got me. you can see in all the 1988 fxr videos i just did that it doesn't seem to matter what i do. the lifters either work, or they don't. s&s told me yo just ride the bike for 10-20 minutes and see what happenes. i told them that there was no way i was going to hammer my valve train like that and cause all kinds of problems down the road. when you put good lfters in they pump right up, right now. tatro

the cheap ass alum cylinders grow to much making the lifters way to loose. very noisy and hard on the valvetrain. tatro
