You've heard it for yourself. Now, take a look at how close the frequency responses are between the Neumann TLM-67 and Soyuz 017 FET and see where they may be different.

Excellent video and I’m enjoying this shoot out so much.. I hear a difference, and on your voice I prefer the Neumann, only because it’s slightly smoother.. I’d keep both.. Their both beautiful microphones.. 🙏

So glad you’re enjoying it. I have to admit genuine surprise over how this played out. I definitely love the smoothness of the TLM67 and you’ve just reminded me to jot down something I want to mention about that in the next video.

The Soyuz sounds more present to me and, as an MKH416 owner, getting a mic like that seems somewhat redundant, hence why I'd lean towards the TLM67 for its smoother sounds and less sibilance. Thank you for the informative comparison.

Oh yes you are spot on! From a studio perspective, I have been recording female vox with the Soyuz lately and I noticed that the top end of the Soyuz 017 FET is really smooth, so smooth that I sometimes don't do much asides very basic EQ. I tried the TLM 67 quite a while ago now but I don't remember hearing that smoothness at the top. For VO, where the performer's dynamics are a bit more predictable, they are hard to tell apart! Awesome video. Keep an eye out for a vintage U-67 please! Though, I guess that would be more akin to the 017 Tube

Yeah, man. Just based upon this grand experiment and knowing that the 017 tube sounds very much the same as the FET, but with some tube mojo, I bet it would be closer to the u67 than one would expect.

If I absolutely had to pick one it would have to be the one with the cooler look and and the hipster cred... and that's the Soyuz.

Extremely valid reasoning.

Neumann has the name but as others have stated, you don't get a much cooler look than the Soyuz. It's awesome to know the Soyuz is so similar to another great mic in the TLM 67. Did not know insides of the TLM67 were so very ordinary....Impressive mics

If I had to pick one, it would be the TLM 67. Reasons: More versatile since it's multi-pattern, readily available nearly everywhere, can be easily modded to a U67-like mic, and a bit more robust in its build.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Год назад
Good points. Though the Soyuz is the more robust of the two. Thing’s built like a tank and the brass frame weighs twice as much. That TLM67 to u67 mod does look pretty incredible.

I actually find them a little bit different. Close. Very close even, but definitely different. The Neumann is like butter, the Soyuz like garlic butter.

I love that! Very aptly put. I'll be dipping my lobster tails in the Soyuz from now on.

@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Nice. And the TLM67 will be the all round bread and butter to pay for them!

I bet that if you tested 2 different TLM-67's there'd be just as much variation as with the Soyuz. That's awfully close. The small differences could probably be EQ'ed out, now that you have the frequency response right there.

Yep, there's the Soyuz crispness 😂 So, tried eq matching the Soyuz to the 67 for kicks?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Год назад
Oh, you think that’s how I get my kicks? You think I’m some guy who goes around EQ’ing things just to make them sound like other things? Some total weirdo with a need to eq? I knew a guy like that. Woke up one morning face down in a puddle of his own puke. Ok, actually that’s not true. It was someone else’s puke… ok, fine I admit it. yeah, I’ve tried matching it and it was GLORIOUS!
