The third and final sewing video about making gold and ivory brocade 1780's Stays using the pattern by Redthreaded! The stays are part of my Arcadian Shepherdess series.
This video contains the following steps in the sewing process:
02:14 Boning - Lower Bones
04:36 Bias Binding - Stomacher
06:37 Bias Binding - Tab Binding
13:03 Boning - Upper Bones
16:32 Grommets
18:51 Ribbon Lacing
19:45 Final Fit
20:34 Bias Binding - More Binding
21:20 Straps
This is building towards my historically inspired Arcadian Shepherdess outfit, and the garment is sewn using modern techniques, with a sewing machine and overlocker.

I was about to give up and attempt to hand-sew my binding to my tabs because I was so frustrated. But I remembered your video here. I love the idea of the crossed pins plus the clips to hold it steady while sewing it around those fiddly tabs. Genius! Everything else had gone smoothly and I had heard tab binding was the tough part, but my goodness!

Thanks! I'm really happy with it! (And my plan for next year is to make another - with more of a hobbit vibe)

OMG, picking my jaw off the floor. Amazing!!! I've got to make something similar for a five year old girl and don't think I'll find any pattern to help me with it:( Gonna watch all your videos.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who persists on using bend pins 😉
@CrystalPegasusCostumes
@CrystalPegasusCostumes 3 года назад
Hehehe yes, they can still be useful! I find there's a sort of hierarchy of tasks - some need really straight pins, others can be managed with a little bend.... But I should probably buy some more new pins soon...

Wonderful narration and wonderful work! I'm watching while sewing my own stays, mine are handsewn just to see how it was historically, but when I'm done with these I'll totally make some entirely machine sewn like yours. I can also identify with working the morning before an event a bit too well lol. Thank you for such a lovely video!

Thank you! Good luck with your stays - hand sewing all those boning channels is a huge amount of work!

Ah, the pre show crunch! You'd think with how often it happens, we'd learn 😅 They look fantastic though, I'm sure you'll find plenty of excuses to wear the heck out of them post lockdown!
@CrystalPegasusCostumes
@CrystalPegasusCostumes 3 года назад
Indeed! But sometimes inspiration strikes and you've got to go for it! (She says.... trying to justify that it will happen again and again...) Thank you! Even in lockdown I wore them for a Zoom "pyjama party" one night! Where there's a will, there's a way!

@@CrystalPegasusCostumes Oh, that inspiration bug has a life of its own, huh? 😂 that's so cool you could use it for a zoom party! So far I've only had raiding parties (cause I'm one of those gamer nerds 😛)

Beautiful stays!! Can one use flat steel boning instead of synthetic whale bone? I’m awfully squishy and need more support.
@CrystalPegasusCostumes
@CrystalPegasusCostumes 2 года назад
Yes, that's possible. I'd be careful using flat steel at the sides, you may want to consider spiral steel there, but you have to find what works for your body. Certainly for the front and back you could go with flat steel. I'd recommend that you (either at the mock up stage or before you bind the top of your final stays) try out the boning you are thinking of. Lace the stays up and wear them around the house for a few hours. See how the bones go, and you can always swap them out for another sort if needed. I should add, I've been very happy with the support (and lightness) of synthetic whalebone, so they may still be worth considering if you haven't tried it before. Best of luck with your stays!

Hello fellow Aussie!!!! I am wondering if you might be able to give me the name of a few fabric shops around Melbourne who may have a website I can order from,,,, I am in Launceston Tasmania and sadly my only option is Spotlight,,,,
@CrystalPegasusCostumes
@CrystalPegasusCostumes 3 года назад
Hello!! Sure thing :) My absolute favourite, "go to" shop is Rathdowne Fabrics - they are quite close to me and in non-lockdown times it's very easy to pop in and browse their selection including the various remnants at discounted prices. Others that I like are Silk World in Collingwood (if you're feeling fancy) and The Fabric Store in Fitzroy. At the bargain end, there are various places on Sydney Road in Brunswick, but I don't know if they have websites. Not strictly fabric, but if you're interested in yarn, then my favourite is Maker Maker in Brunswick East. Good luck and please let me know how you get on!

@@CrystalPegasusCostumes ,,,,Thank You so much! I will defiantly check these out,,,, It is so deflating when you go to a fabric store and ask where the coutil is only to be greeted with a blank stare (They had to google what it was,,and no,, they don't sell it)
