I remember learning about the annexation of Hawaii in school and even as a child, it felt wrong. I am in support the return of Hawaii to its people and the throne to the descendents of the crown 👑.

I am, too - it feels a lot more wrong after doing the research for this series. All I knew before was that Hawai‘i had been a territory before it became a state. I had no idea that the US president had even asked for Hawai‘i to be given back to the queen. The things they don't tell you in history class....

😂 The shade thrown at the weird medieval English names 😂 Hawaiian names are beautiful! Thank you I love your videos!❤

A bit low brow and unprofessional in an otherwise great series. They appear to be old Anglo Saxon names, a very different time people and culture than Colonial Victorian Britain. Not relevant at all - respect is a two way street. That rant out of the way. As a proud born Britain I condemn the racial snootery described, and declare the very greatest respect for the people culture and language of Hawaii. 🤙

@@PerfectlyImperfect93 I was talking about the creator not you. I love their work and its just a small criticism. And yes the Victorians were a bunch of snooty snobs. But what does that have to do with an ancient people and language. Could it be about the recent trend of the term Anglo Saxon being used as a negative buzz word. Even to the extent popping up in Vladimir Putin speeches recently. Not going to burn the cakes over it though. Godspell 🙂🙏

I’d been “saving these up” so I could bypass the cliffhangers! What a story. What a haunting beauty she was. Wow.

Haunting is a great word to describe her...there's just something about her that grabs your imagination and won't let go. I got a little obsessed this summer/fall while researching her. And those photos of her - incredible. Part 4 is out now, so you can watch all the way through with no cliffhangers. ;)

She sure is beautiful. I have an oil painting of her, the one with her back facing the artist.

I have been entranced by the tale of this charmng young lady and hold on to the slimest hope that she is able to gain the happy future she deserves. Your presentation of the facts, the photographs and the re-enactments are magnificent. The 50 minutes sped by to the extent that I thought this episode could be no more than half way through when it came to an end.

Thanks so much, Gerry! Once I started researching her story, I just couldn't stop...and then I couldn't stand to cut out big chunks of the story to make it fit into a tidy 30-minute summary. Nope. I wanted to tell a more complete story...and I'm so glad you're enjoying it. 💜

This is such a well-told narrative. I have only a passing familiarity with the Hawaiian royal family but I truly appreciate how you provide such full depth and personality to all the characters (who are quite obviously real people) - this attention to narrative craft really helps to keep track of everyone whom I was previously unfamiliar with (especially when binging RU-vid history videos). I also love how you take time to tell the benign (by historical standards) anecdotes that make them more real on our minds - and some of them are just plain sweet! Fantastic series thus far and I can’t wait to watch more of your work!

Hmmm. No mention of the congregations of Hawaiians and Hawaii citizens on the outer islands to review and vote on the new Constitution. The Ku'e petitions had 40,000 plus signatures and were" lost" for most of the last 80 years. When they were relocated they have been exhibited in front of Iolani Palace for "Onipa'a". Also, family members from the current era were able to add their signatures. What hasn't been said yet is there has never been any treaty of annexation signed and this takeover set the scene for coups and overthrows of many other sovereign nations. A decade or so ago, we attended Onipa'a, as we do most years & the Grandson(or great grandson) of Grover Cleveland addressed the crowd on the lawn of Iolani. He said that thefamily was still interested in bringing justice to Hawaii. His grandfather lost the election and we all know what happened. Great series Tiara girl. From Oakland CA

Thank you for so much détails of Ka'iulani' life and the story of Hawaï.I always remember the paintings of Ka'iulani in the Pink hôtel in Waïkiki. ❤ I happened to live 3 yrs and à half on Mauï. And last time I went back, making a stop over in Honolulu, it was in 1993, I remember all the protestations in front of the Palace down town.Of course it had been 200 yrs since the annexation! And people were very motivated !! And I was with them. 😢

5:35 Kamehameha III is at center, flanked by Queen Kalama (far left), and their hanai children: Alexander Liholiho (later Kamehameha IV, 2nd from left), Lot Kapuaiwa (later Kamehameha V, 4th from left), and Victoria Kamamalu (far right) 39:12 "Island" isn't the English word (the register is in German). In German, Island (pron. "ees-land") means "Iceland" - which of course makes no sense, Ka'iulani likely reported that she was from Ireland (where she'd been with the Davies that summer) - Ireland is "Irland" in German - and a transcription error changed it to Island. Also, the register lists all of Wiesbaden's foreign residents (not just hotel guests).

Mahalo nui for these 4 parts of Princess Ka'iulani; I wept for joy. My only criticism is your pronunciation of the name Davies: it's pronounced "Day-veez", not "Davis". I'm part of that family, so I know.

Back in those days if we had the Kanaka moli from today as in now days we would fight for our queen they would never step foot on Hawaii nei even if the queen didn't send us.People say we the people of Hawaii is racist sure because those Haole put our queen in jail she never suppose to be in jail.if all eight of the Hawaiian Island people found out what this haoles was doing to her we all would've her royal guard. But the girl in the tiara I love the 4 part of princess I knew Lil bit about her but her but now I know all about my princess.....Mahalo Nui Loa

This was a crime. But I think what's missing is the notion that manifest destiny included HI and to allow the british to take HI, which is what was going to happen, particularly bc the US had serious problems with UK in the colonies. But today the US has the chance to redeem itself. but will it?

Please....King Kamehameha brutally conquered the Hawaiian Islands stealing the land from the chiefs of each island....everybody acts like that's ok...if Hawaii had not become an American state I guarantee another nation would have conquered Hawaii either.peacefully or by force....just like native american tribes were conquering eachother for hundreds.of years before being conquered by USA....before American missionaries came to Hawaii, native Hawaiians did not have a written language it was American missionaries that helped create a written Hawaiian language...without literacy you would only have oral traditions and you would be unable to have a clear written record of your history, there would be no higher education...no engineering, No written history....we can't live in the past..its not real. As much as any of us might wish to return to the past it is a fantasy in the mind....it is a delusion not reality...time is always moving forward...the past is gone it will never return...the present is all you have.......if you were to protest King Kamehameha you would have been slaughtered. It is because you have a right to freedom of speech.protected by the USA 🇺🇸 constitution that you are able to legally protest against the USA 🇺🇸 Government...while living in the 🇺🇸....like it or not Hawaii is 🇺🇸..FACTS.... Lets be honest....Hawaii was in the stone age before the westerners 🇺🇸 came and taught you how to read and write, do mathematics engineering, business, science....without western 🇺🇸 civilization you never would have received education, literacy technology...I'm not trying to be mean I'm just speaking the truth.....please stop glorifying the Kapuu system where ALL the land was owned by the King and all of the nstive Hawaiian people were his indentured servants...SLAVES...the western system 🇺🇸 has endured this long because it has been more functional than primitive, stoneage society....high tech is superior to stoneage tech....the irony is all of the technology you use in everyday life came from other countries...change is inevitable haoles are here to stay 🇺🇸 🇺🇲 Aloha 😎

All the flag waving because you can't honestly face what your country did and continues to do. What a disgrace to the flag you are so proud of! No caring for the pain of people who lost *their* country. No moral sense of the dastardly coverup and the continued illegal occupation of a sovereign nation. Total lack of human soul. I feel sorry for you. I hope you find compassion.
