Just bought a 96 GT, also in Texas. It’s so nice to have a car older than 25 years that’s exempt from emissions testing. Cost a whopping $7 for a safety inspection!
Yes!! So great not to have to worry about some sensor or some little thing out of whack that doesn't really affect anything other than make some shop $1000 to fix it. My Son's 1995 vette we just bought is the same way. Cost me $7 to get it inspected yesterday
Pro tip from a former convertible owner: stand with one foot in the back seat and one foot on the console. That will give you the leverage to pull the top up by yourself. Have you gone through the brakes? One thing I learned with my Mustang - do an overhaul, even if they look ok. Pads, rotors, fluid. You said you are getting an inspection, but didn't say if you fixed the speedometer! Also, did you clear that code52?
Haven't messed with brakes. Joey and I got on the brakes and they are really good. But that's in the plans to take the wheels off and check all 4. Speedometer was fixed when I replaced a fuse. Haven't messed with airbag 52 yet. You gave me an idea for that battery backup and I found the location of it, just haven't messed with it yet.
So...flunked inspection thanks to the Jan 2021 texas law for must allow more than 25% light in. Mine was 15%. Took me about 15 minutes and pulled it all off. Could have left it on back window, but it was a little bubbled so I went ahead and took it off. Will go back Friday and finish the inspection
If you’re unsure about your fuses grab a cheap multimeter and check for continuity across the two pins. Also, if you have a pull and pay junkyard near you can find the console lid for $10.
Probably too late now but check with your state DMV because that car may be inspection exempt already. In my state my 94 GT is and I don't have to get it inspected ever again.
In Texas, and depending on which county you live in, we are exempt from emissions on 25+ year old cars, but we still have to have a safety inspection each year. I think there may be exceptions if you register your car as a “classic” or some sort of show car, but I’m not sure.
