I really appreciate these videos you do. I have known its been sitting there for four months, but like a bottle of fine wine, I leave watching it for special occasions when I have the time to savour the experience.
Nearly to the end of this episode I was thinking how straightforward everything was going. Then, Gav, you introduced the new and dimensionally different series 3 radiator into the mix. So, here's a sincere and heartfelt wish for good luck and success in achieving a compatible and satisfactory arrangement for the radiator, frame, and engine. As ever, Keep On Keepin' On! 👍
Thanks Noah, I think we'll get that radiator in. I did look into some custom ones where I send them the original and they make a whole new one. Expensive but doable if needed.
If you get bored working on the Landy I have a very bent Coaster that needs some work LOL Great production as always. The filming certainly adds to the workload of an already complex and difficult job.
I think the films are 60% of the work. This resto would be finished years ago if not for the films. I might be a bit too far away to help out with the coaster, hope you get it sorted.
Gday , I’ve started using electrolysis to basically remove ALL rust and the process turns rusted metal into a black coloured solid steel . Just need some sodium carbonate and a battery charger !! And weld through primer is your rusts enemy ! Love your series 😎
Fun and games while restoring Land Rovers is never in short supply. But while you’re always progressing forward,it’s a great adventure. The beast beneath the bonnet needs a good solution.I don’t think the V8 is the best answer either, but you have to work with what’s readily available.I’ll wait to see what you decide,or see how good a magician you are 😉
Hi Mr Magician Gavin The Great, You continue to amaze, with these wonder~inspiring escapades (epic sodas, er episodes). And the next upcoming one is sure to appease (and please/astound/incredibleize) the masses herein residing (hangin about). Your positivity in the face of total impossibilities is astounding, and just as incredible as those impossibilities are; is your undeniable ability to stomp all over them. Regardless. Well done young man (I can say that 'coss I'm not :) ). My regards to Summer Krikkit and The Cat (I think I caught a glimpse once of one???? ). 🤠
When Mig welding thin section clamp a thick piece of flat copper behind and the mig will fill up any holes and the copper just falls off leaving a flat surface.
Check out Disovery 300 TDI engine transplant into Series trucks great on fuel power and same configuration as Series 2 1/4 block great video your metal fabrication is next level that firewall was epic.
Thanks Gippy. I think the 300TDI is a very pricey option though aside from re-doing the V8 there isn't a cheap option. At least the one I did find ran off with my money so that doesn't count.
Loving every episode, but now becoming anxious that this series of videos will be ending far too soon 😞- One can only hope you'll decide to rebuild the disco once this is on the road 🙂
I think the series will wrap up quickly once the engine is sorted. The Disco has been getting rebuilt over time but not being filmed, the series 1 videos are very labor intensive as it is so I couldn't do the Disco as well. It would be overwhelming.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Maybe you should combine all the Landy videos into one pro-production and sell it on Patreon or somewhere. I'm sure that there are lots of fans and Landy owners like me who'd happily pay for it 👍👍
I think our channel would have less success on Patreon than we have free on RU-vid. We don't resonate with a large audience and if anything the channel is in decline. Our only reason for making films is because we enjoy making them. As a very young person I did wish to be a film maker, a wish that came true. Unfortunately I forgot to mention famous and rich.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Well if you do decide to glue all the episodes together, I'm sure that there are many Landy owners like me that would pay for it - and promote it on our own social channels. You may not think you have a large audience, but it is a very faithful one 👍
The freedom of an unshod hoof is wonderful indeed. Mine are a seasonal thing being a bit of a princess when it's cold. They're a little soft this Summer as the workload has been a bit more intense and boots have to be worn.
Put a 2.25lt series 2a engine in the new rad will match up there may be an issue with gearbox bell housing series1 and series 2/2a not same stud patten but you can fit 2a bell housing to series 1 case but will need to change to series2a layshaft as they use larger front bearing.
This is a very good albeit expensive suggestion. I may or may not already be investigating this option. Can't say too much because of spoilers. One source, yet to be proven reliable claims the stud pattern of series 2 and early 2A will be a direct fit to a 2.25 ltr motor and use the same layshaft and bearing, they seemed to have been beefed up sometime around 1963 ? Allegedly these bell housings also accommodate shaft activated clutch system of the series 1. Weather this information proves true or false is yet to be seen.
In the old days they used lead to fill in the pits one get paint on lead heat it up and it turns to lead and one while its hot smooth it over afterwards sand it away using safety equipmant ofcoarse butt tgese days its bondo or boddy putty
Hey Gav...glad you're back! I was starting to worry thet the Series 1 was turning into a Sydney Harbour bridge project! That is the work behind you needing to be redone as you got on with the next new bit! Looking good now!
Don't worry, you're exactly correct in the Sydney Bridge analogy. I'm feeling the pressure to hurry up and get things done before the chassis rots on me again.
So what I remember about my engine swap to Rover V8 in early 80s was a kit from Philips engineering 1:14 ,Diffs one from Rover 90 one from early Range Rover 12 spline? ,Jaguar MK1 clutch mounted to Rover P6 flywheel, cut 1.1/2 from top of Bell housing indentations on the Bulkhead (1firewall) then pop rivet back in You need a small hose from top of manifold to top of Rad to bleed off air from Highest point in system, use a drilled out Metal shraidar Tire Valve and 5/16 hose -+ Electric Fan There is no reason for cutting the front crossmember as mine was a 86” I think the Mods to yours are from an earlier Diesel conversion maybe ? Is you’d a 86 or 88 “ the most important thing is the Diffs as it’s undeliverable without can’t remember using 1 gear - presently restoring a 88 series one station + I have remains of 2 more series ones 80 and 86 Best of luck Sam
Greetings Deane, Having engine troubles that's causing significant delays. We're also off on walkabout soon but once the engine is sorted the whole project will wrap up quickly I think.
I looked into a radiator re-core and fix. The places that do it seem nowadays to be few and far between and the one quote I got was $800 USD which scared me off. I could get a custom aluminum one for a little more but if the series 3 can be made to fit I'll settle for that.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures i can see 4cl rad $550 6cyl $1200. In AUS from brittishautoparts. Maybe $800 is not bad. But ye, fit the rad you got now. As long as it can handle a bigger motor
Lots to think about the biggest is the cost of making any other engine match up to the Series 1 gearbox, bell housing adapters are available but not cheap. The other issue is how much power you can put in front of a series box, also what are the differential ratios, are they original 4.1 : 1 or later 3.54: 1 to suit the V8 engine. I know you have refurbished all this kit but the relationship of all components is relative to longevity of the vehicle. Having finished my 2A and installed 225/95/16 tyres to a standard setup i am finding gear ratios a big influence on my driving. It's bloody slow on hills but great on the flat the bigger tyres equate to something like a 16 % increase over original ratios therefore effectively an overdrive. Not good for the hilly country i live in or the Mountains i am hoping to camp in. Gonna be exciting on some of the downhill sections as the tyre size effects all gears and both high and low ratio engine braking. Thanks again for the videos i have been watching for years you and Summer deserve a better following you, i think you have produced some of the best videos on RU-vid and deserve to be recognized. I know i have commented on this video a couple of times in the past, i have to admit i have been known to imbibe in some Sugar Cane Champagne on the odd occasion. \ All the best
Greetings Gippy (I'll address you by your code name on a public forum). The power plant saga for the old land rover could be very close to resolved though until it is being loaded into the chassis I don't want to celebrate too early. The whole project has stalled on the engine section but as this is as stated, a public post, I can't reveal details. The diff gearing I don't know about, I suspect now they are from a series 2A and if there is a standard for those then that is what they'll be. I haven't even driven this vehicle yet besides the idle limp into the workshop so I have no idea how it might perform once operational again. I've a friend down the road who owns a series 1 to use as a reference but 'down the road' where we are isn't that close. As for our channels very small status we are definitely good with that arrangement and hope it continues. A social media personality it not on my 'to do' bucket list.
My sentiments exactly! The world has been testing the patience of both I and our small audience with engine dramas that hopefully will soon be resolved thanks to some drastic action by my good self. If things do go as planned I'm hoping the project will be complete by early 2024.
Don't mess it up fitting the wrong engine 2litre petrol plenty fast enough . Keep everything original . It's a classic vehicle of historic value. You would not fit a chinese movement in a grandfather clock and scrap the original mechanism. Respect the vehicle you have . A lot of these motors trashed through so call improvement that only devalue the motor.Phil
It's 30 episodes closer than ever before to rolling down the road!! bloody great progress. The radiator is not the problem, it's the bloody thumping big V 8 taking up too much realestate under the hood. Mabye its time to appease those none subscripted rivet counting Landrover purists and go back to an original Landrover motor?? crazy talk. Perhaps an electric conversion? I have found fishing to be far more fun than wrenching on fkd old land rovers of late, it prevents a lot of mechanical conundrums too. oh yer, try some pad welding on the pitted stuff, its a lazy restorers dream.
Ahoy there comrade! Good to hear from you. Your suggestion on the engine swap is underway though we'll have to keep this conversation on the low down to avoid spoilers. From what you told me about the electric conversion it would cost a lot of fishing trips and for me be too complicated I fear. I hope the fish are biting.
Yes electric is expensive and complicated for us 10 thumb folk.. I have sold my electric project to a better healed mate, still working on it (as I need to remain in the 'longest landrover project ever "competition with you as a display of solidarity). Just publish an up date. I look forward to seeing what you go with.
@ForemanandWilmsAdventures Have you heard about the off road games in Utah. Hosted by matt's off road recovery. if your a youtuber with a 4x4 your invited would be great for the channel.
