It's so close now, you can almost taste it! Looking great, and keeping the patina of the original bodywork while ensuring the mechanicals are tip top is fantastic. My friend did the same with his Series I. He also went with 7.50 tyres which looks great IMO. I'm not sure about those white 8 spoke wheels though, maybe look to replace those with something better down the road. Original Discovery steels can look good on a Series if done right. The Wolf steels also another good choice. It's your vehicle though, so you do what you want to it. Love the louves on the bonnet from where it had the V8.

I used stainless bolts rebuilding a '42 Willys in 2006! The lesson I learned is that each bolt and nut needs antiseIze grease on to avoid galling so they can be removed at a later stage! Be warned! Looking good! You too!
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures 6 месяцев назад
I've pondered that idea about the grease on the nuts, especially those exposed in the wheel wells to excess grime and filth. I might do a few as samples to see over time if in these cases it helps or not.

I am always excited when I see one of your videos come up and this one did not disappoint. I spent 10 years resurrecting a 1958 S2 88" and my mindset was much the same as yours...keep the patina, but make it drive-able, steer-able, and stop-able. Since mine has been back together, appearing almost exactly like that first day, I sometimes look at it and wonder, where did all that time and money go? Every time I drive it though, totally worth it! Another benefit of larger tires is more top end speed (sic) without an overdrive. I'm going to be a little sad when this series is over.
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures

Once this project ends a huge void will open up though I don't think I'd have the money or time to do another. Between the series 1, the Disco and the Aussie Defender I should still have plenty to keep me occupied.

Quite. All terrain will work just fine. The MT's are really for rough roads or tough daily farm work. By all costing standards they should be marginally cheaper than the equivalent radial plies. Cheers.@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures

As a 4 x 4 owner, 73 years old I’ve had over 22 different 4 x 4‘s ,my two cents is you’ve done a wonderful job ,I really enjoyed watching you videos, when it comes time to replace your tires my preference is “toya M 55s”,A rugged 4 x 4 tire with less rolling resistance good traction and smooth ride. In my opinion the best tires, as I’ve had several different brands although not every brand.

22 4x4's is quite a collection though I assume most have been sold or retired. I reckon if I ever deviated from Land Rovers the old Bronco and ancient Land Cruisers would be my choice. Possibly add one of the older jeeps to that list.

Gavin. Looking at the Comments, seems I'm the only non-mechanical person here. No matter. I was smiling all the way through this episode. More than 5 years and countless scrapes and scratches later you are almost there. I would never do what you did but I have such admiration for your craziness. A suggestion: when it's finally up and running, can we finish with Krikket, Summer and you riding off into the sunset to some appropriately heroic music? Well done amigo!
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures 6 месяцев назад
You not doing what I'm doing is wisdom. I had no idea what I was walking into the day I started this project. I have to say the learning curve has been huge and now I realize how little I do know. The sunset idea is one of many endings under consideration and the most likely. A montage of clips surmising the whole journey to a Rick Astley or Jimmy Barnes song probably won't happen as licensing for these things appears very difficult.

The follow up film to this one is done but I'm holding it back for a few weeks while the wiring gets filmed and with all the pre-prep that might not take long. My excitement for the finish line has been dampened by the prospect of the huge void beyond of where my spare time is to go. I have been having some success with tracking mountain lions of late and getting them on film so maybe me and the dog will spend more time in the bush.

Howdy Gavin, just noticed your channel. I'm a series 1 owner myself, although it's far from original, but was built to be used as an everyday car about 8 or 9 years ago. My ownership started as a paddock clean up, in all of her beauty, my car is called Lilly, she was just a bare chassis with 1 rear spring, an engine and gearbox that were full of water and a chassis you could see the ground through the chassis rail in the region of the brake master cylinder. So after $20000 plus dollars and 18 months, while working full time, Lilly has hiven me about 90 000km of joyfull motoring. Not wishing to upset the rivet counters I won't go into her specs, but she's great to drive, every day, and keeps up with the traffic. I like your delivery and will binge watch your previous episodes. Take care dude
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures 6 месяцев назад
That's quite an achievement bringing a chariot that far gone back to life. Finding replacement body parts would have been a feat in itself. I have great respect for the restorers who go as close to original as possible but like you, ease and functionality win out for me. I've swapped out as many British threaded nuts and bolts as I can in favour of more accessible fixings for ones that rattle out on the road.
@garrywest8511
@garrywest8511 6 месяцев назад
To reply further...Lilly is a '54 86. Lilly is far from original, there's a place for all of us. The firewall is a rough copy, in aluminium, no vents because Lilly was always going be an open car, I've used a series 3 integral booster pedal assembly and series2/3 clutch pedal, so the firewall is a different shape to accommodate them. The engine is a Mazda RF/T a 2litre old school indirect injection turbo diesel. The gearbox is a series 3 6 cylinder unit, onto it is a Holden 6 adapter plate to which I added a 1" alloy adapter plate of my own to mate everything together. I've used a series 3 front axle and a series 2, 1959, rear axle with 6 cylinder brakes all around. Like Andy's car Lilly is a rag top. She has 3.54 diffs from an early Disco, consequently I can run out on the highway at 100-110 km/h on cruise control, getting around 10L/100km, with plenty of double takes from other drivers. I've got power steering, thought I'd be getting feeble by now, I'm 63 this year. The dude who takes Lilly for her yearly pink slip, NSW, loves driving Lilly, taking the scenic route to and from the brake test, which I don't mind, he thinks she's marvellous for a 70 year old car. When we went for engineering, the engineer wouldn't pass the standard wipers so I adapted the series 3 cable system, but both sweeping the same way, not towards each other. Have watched more of your videos and like you I use a lot of stainless bolts, you don't have to repaint them and they're fine in not load critical safety situations. The body panels are all,except the firewall, are in "as found" don't like the p word, front guards and radiator support panel are almost devoid of paint. The seat were new from Exmoor, I don't share your enthusiasm after spending 7500km in 10 days sitting on them for Lilly's shakedown trip and the top, I think, is an Undercover Covers item. Sorry to be soooo long winded but I really love Lilly. Keep up the great work, take care dude.

Love your work as always, I would replace the Sunraysia rims just because they are Fugly and do no favours to the already infamous ambiguous landroverous steering.. Also get yourself a set of noise cancelling earmuffs, you aint heard noisey till you've been in a series 1 with a hardtop, the plus is you do go deaf quite quickly and its then (ironically) a mute point. Stay well my friend.

If you've any recommendations on suitable rims I'm listening. Won't be a next purchase kind of thing but something for the future. The chariot came with a rover 3.5 V8 and a shattered gearbox which is why the cross member was cut. I haven't put any rubber under the front grill though it sounds like a decent idea.
