i might be wrong but i think that wheel is too far forward. pulling it back a bit and finding the optimal flow would have helped and possibly increased the rotation, nice video though
@SilvaDreams
@SilvaDreams 5 лет назад
Well this was posted 2 years ago, but yes it should be pulled back almost 6 inches so the water is hitting the downward curve of the wheel... Or flipped around and scooted forwards so the wheel rotates with the flow of the down steam water in case of the water level rising so you don't have power loss (or at least minimizes it)
@madman432000
@madman432000 5 лет назад
@@SilvaDreams That's what I was wondering, turn wheel around and drop flow into scoops, also would eliminate the splash out he talked about. And maybe a centrifugal brake to reduce speed at high flow levels.
@pobvic
@pobvic 5 лет назад
@@madman432000 I think the optimal design has been shown to accelerate the water down a flume and contact the wheel near the bottom, so the water hits near the bottom and only for a short time, but at higher velocity.
@raykent3211
@raykent3211 5 лет назад
@@madman432000 I think his design is called on overshoot wheel. It takes advantage of the forward momentum of the water as well as its weight falling under gravity.
@paulbottomley42
@paulbottomley42 5 лет назад
@@pobvic I was always under the impression that an overshot wheel, with water pouring from above, developed more power, since you get gravity acting on the water in each bucket for longer - as opposed to the water simply pushing the wheel. Certainly an overshot wheel is a later design than undershot, and it seemed to have stuck back when people were using them to mill wheat.

Maybe bring you slough out little further to have the water fall farther out on the paddles would help on loss of water and speed. Also try a different size gear on the paddle wheel, think about it like a ten speed bike. Look at the back sprocket different size gives your speed difference so that maybe you can speed it up so to gain 12 volts. Just suggestions.

Falling further would not improve efficiency, it would hinder it, as the stream becomes more diffuse when it has further to fall...
@bayouratt283
@bayouratt283 6 лет назад
I realize this is almost a year old, but. You might could run the setup you have there except instead of the generator attached to the 11 tooth, have another 72 tooth sprocket with a chain hooked to your 11 tooth sprocket attached to your generator. It takes a little more energy to spin it but I don't see a lack of power to the wheel. I think you might want to come out a little farther with the chute because if the flow stops and starts back, odds are it's going to go backwards. You could possibly fine tune it for the best all around angle of attack for max output. Nice design otherwise, great work.

Joe, You get AC out of the generation process. It takes a commutator or rectifier to get DC. A step up transformer with a ratio of 1:2.2 would have gotten you the necessary volts. TANSTAAFL applies and raising the voltage lowers the amperage. Eli D.

The motor I used is a permanent magnet DC motor, it outputs DC power.
@chemicstry
@chemicstry 7 лет назад
What you need is a DC-DC boost converter. There are plenty of cheap ones from china. But I would firstly measure how much power you are getting. You have only measured voltage, but you should also measure how much current it puts out. I bet it would be decent amperage due to relatively high torque.

I agree but it isn't just as easy as it can be said I can see it being more likely if you first had a larger flow of water like something simple 240 gallons with 40 feet of head. The next step is installing a few speedometers in key locations within the water wheel and gear systems so you can run a computer software to automatically shift the gears higher lower depending on what rpm the generator needs. I am not the smartest when it comes to gear ratio but how many gears would be needed to achieve a 50:1 gr and what level of cooling would work at that point as well as that couldn't you put a 2stroke motor at 40:1 to start up the system

@timstoev5607

the splashing happens because of the paddles are too close to each other and are positioned at a right angle to the flow. While the wheel spins the time a single paddle gets exposed to the flow(gets filled with water) gets shorter as potential energy is transferred into kinetic energy and the next paddle comes upwards and splashes breaking the flow , before it begins filling. This means that for each paddle you basically loose part of the energy of the flowing water- you can see how much when you rotate the wheel backwards and the water flow keeps it spinning.

Actually You should run the wheel in the opposite direction so the bottom of the wheel is turning in the same direction as the flow of the stream. This allows water to push on the veins much longer and prevents the wheel from being stopped if the water in the steam gets higher than the bottom of the wheel. Close the end of the trough and make a slot so the water drops straight down into the cup of the vein.
@gazinta

yesss dude, beautifully done. the water splashing back only leads me to think that theres too much water for the size of the wheel. make a bigger one :D :D more torque for your generator, you can run a gearing system off of the wheel too depending on the size of the motor and the rpm which you want the motor to spin (average).
@easternwoods4378
@easternwoods4378 7 лет назад
That's a well done system. I like how you mounted the wheel adjustment blocks so you can balance it. The power you get is flow rate and head, that's all you get, but as you slow it down you fill the wheel more and increase your torque. I'd also suggest you recalculate to power available at the new place. 200 feet of head at that flow rate should be more than 500 watts. If you do use it I'd suggest a turgo wheel rather than a pelton wheel
@aserta
@aserta 7 лет назад
It's the right size, as he says, besides, with these types of things, you're better off on the smaller size, as streams don't always flow at the same level. Smaller ensures you have a somewhat constant output, go bigger, well, not so much. Saw a documentary about a restoration in France of a water mill. The river wasn't quite up to the task of the original wheel, they cut about 10 to 15 cm off the circumference because of that.

It should slow it down and give more torque that way, at the moment it looks like its spinning too fast and not enough water is pushing on each individual bucket. A lot of the ones I've seen have a lot fewer buckets.

@____________________________.x
If you had a parabolic shaped rill you could get a faster flow even when the head water was low, you are losing a lot of flow due to friction. The same idea is used in some guttering systems to avoid sludge build up

Very informative and well put together. Subscribed. Only thing I'd change is (and this applies to every maker on RU-vid) try to normalize the volume every time you're using power tools. You do a good job at it, but you do miss a few spots here and there and I hate fumbling with the volume. Only a very small handful of RU-vidrs actually take great care in making sure the volume is normalized across the entire video. Other than that one little thing...... Awesome videos!! Keep em coming!

Great job but why slow the wheel down you're defeating the purpose of Max RPM so what if it's not capturing all of it if you slow it down to capture it your decreasing your output

Dang Joe! Ya took 48 minutes to show us something that DOESN'T work? You were downright ramblin at the end. If you want more of those RU-vid revenues you're going to have to respect our time a whole lot better than that. Your video could have been two minutes. That's not exaggerating.

If you don't like his videos you don't have to watch them. I assume he's new to video making/editing. He's filming and sharing a project with us. He owes you NOTHING. No respect, nothing. I'm sure constructive criticism is welcome, but your attitude reeks of entitlement. Why you would think that a stranger owes you anything as a viewer of something you paid nothing for is beyond me.

Stop worrying about the volts, just add a dc to dc buck converter to increase voltage, they are cheap, and they are great for providing a constant voltage for varying water current flows. Please research them, they will help you in all your projects. A cheap 6 volt generator can produce 80 volts dc with a cheap buck converter. Don't add gears, they just take away power! Just add a dc to dc buck converter!

nice rig, when you need to waterproof any wood piece, try and warm them by a heat source, a grill, firepit, etc, so when you pour resin or any barrier, the wood is dry and drawing fluids in, rather than being humid and saturated .

How much head do you have? Measure from the high water level at the pond to the point on the wheel where it empties. I have a 6" and a 12" Kaplan wheels that I made.. These are variable pitch and the blade angles can be varied while generating if your flow varies. Those types of wheels could have been up at your dam. And they could be operated on a siphon principle. Belt that to a generator and you can get power for your house. I just don't know the cfm of water available to you.

You should use a E-Bike Hub-Motor/Generator. They produce power on a very low RPM so you don't need chain and sprocket sets.
