This was so informative that i watched all the 6 part series in one straight shot..I own an E46, but the Info shown here is applicable to most gas powered engines and should give you an idea on what to expect when you work on the engine for the 1st time..Appreciate all your hard work and knowledge share...

Hey dude, thank you for your very comprehensive videos on taking this engine apart. Just got out of tinkering on white block volvo's and recently acquired two m54-engined beemers, so always nice to prepare for future engine work projects. My e39 525iA is an LPG conversion car with >250K miles on it, but since those are mainly Autobahn miles oil consumption is negligible at around 1 qt every 6000 miles! My e46 330CiA convertible does around 1qt every 3000 miles, so still pretty acceptable given the design of the engine. That one has done half the mileage of the 5-series. Both have done around 8000 miles in my ownership, no problems so far and very delightful to drive. Cooling systems seem OK too, both rads look fresh and new. I'll be sure to keep an eye on your channel! Good luck. Kind regards from The Netherlands!

Really appreciate this series. I've got an M54B30 from my 01 330ci (RIP rear subframe mounts) that I'm going to be putting into an E30, and need to disassemble the engine as it's been sitting for nearly 7 years out in the elements. Hoping I can save it, if not I'll have to figure something else out. But yes, this video series definitely helps!

Love your channel and videos! I came here because my M54 3.0L started smoking and seized on me a few days ago. Any idea where you think the damage could be? Is there a common point that can cause the engine to seize?

I just watched another vid that is reflective of your video here. I think i may of figured out issue as to loud lifter like ticking sound that engine was making. I now need to drop oil pan to determine whether the bolt backed itself off if so i will have to order bolt that has thin wire threaded through outside of said bolt nut then use bit of lock-tite on thread put nut bolt on and twist it around an run through spacer so it dont rub against pully in oil pan twist again to secure it keeping said nut or bolt on...

Great series of 6 videos on disassembling BMW engine! My 325i from 2004 was also overheating because of cracked coolant reservoir assembly. Within less than 24 hours after its replacement, there was a loud knocking sound when the engine was turned off and since then it is badly misfiring and there is a periodic knocking sound coming from inside engine. I am told there is a crack on the manifold and something rattling inside. Could have something metallic, if it got dropped inside cooling system, caused the problem?

I’m doing an engine swap on my 2001 325i (head gasket blew and possible warp head, didn’t feel like dealing with it, the “new” engine is from the exact same car but one year, from 2002 325i, I want to know if there are any extra steps I need to do to make the swap compatible, I know the ECU needs to be swapped over but is there anything else? Just bought an 04 325i with a blown head gasket (says Midas). Car started blowing white smoke and driving weird. The previous owner parked it and bought a new car. When I picked it up, it wouldn't turn over and had to tow it home. But also the battery is very weak. What are your thoughts? It doesn't sound like it has bad compression.

2:20. When the front cover is removed, will it break the oil pan gasket? I have broken the guides while removing the head (and block still in car). A lot more work if I have to remove the oil pan now.

What was the point of locking the cams/crank if you were going to do a full dissasmbly?

My M54 engine on my 330xi overheated, and now it sounds like it’s misfiring when I crank it, my expansion tank wasn’t fully connected to my radiator and everything has been replaced on it except that center waterpump thermostat above the main rotor pully, is there anything I can do to fix this, it was red hot when I pulled over and I had to put 2 1/2 two liters of water in the radiator before driving home, it made my cog trans light pop up on my dash but nothing significant

I'm trying to find an engine for my 2004 bmw 325xi, I know the difference in the AWD motors is the oil pan but are there any differences in the M54 engine itself and can i put an engine in the car from the year 2000-2005

so how does my e46 has the oil light coming on for 30 seconds after starting the car but it still knew I was low on oil? mmm? Both my 330i did this.

You never said what was wrong with the motor, and if it was salvageable or not. I have a similar situation with the same type motor... it over heated and now has no compression on most of the cylinders, so I am wondering what I might have on my hands here, and what I might need to do to fix it. Like do I just need to have the head machined and maybe put in some heli coils where the head bolts pulled out - if they did pull out, or is my motor likely toast? Zero compression seems unusual. Was there anything wrong with the block? It seems like you took it apart and then said you were moving to South Carolina. What ever happened with that motor?

Hold on im in the process of doing one right now. You mean to tell me the oil pump chain doesnt have a tensioner to hold it...it just bolt on

6 part series and you still couldn't tell us conclusively why the engine lost compression. Maybe a leak down before you took it apart might have helped.
