The barrel vault is a functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing roofing solution. The barrel shape is created by extruding the section of a single, stable arch along a single axis. Barrel vaults were originally popular in regions where wood was in short supply. Though the roofs are lumber-laden empires have since rotted away, many ancient barrel vaults are still standing. The world's oldest vault can be found in Thebes, Egypt, at the granaries of Ramasseum (erected around 1300 B.C.)
Besides being more durable, vaults are superior to conventional roofing methods because they have a great deal of thermal mass. Also, the extra ceiling height afforded by the rise of the vault helps facilitate natural ventilation when an exhaust vent is placed as high as possible.
