Robin Lamont has a distinct contribution in show business history. She was a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in the drama department in the early 1970s, when director student John MIchael Tebelak tapped her to be in his master thesis show GODSPELL. Lamont went on to be with the show through it's Off-Off Broadway run, it's Off Broadway run, was featured in the film version and opened the show on Broadway in 1976. Oh, and by the way, her rendition of GODSPELL's signature song DAY BY DAY went to number 13 on the pop charts. She talks with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com about that unique journey.

Robin Lamont put Day by Day on the longevity map. The song has a similar style and time frame reminiscent of Carole King, who was still riding the airwaves of Tapestry.

I was 10 yrs old when the Jesus Movement reached my neighborhood in Detroit in 1973. A group of young people would go around to the different neighborhood parks, witnessing the Gospel of Jesus. I didn't know it at 10 yrs old but, I was born again! Sees were planted!! I went to Catholic schools and we had a young Peoples choir group when I was in grammar school. I was part of the e sang Day By Day often and many other popular songs of that time, not the usual hymnal sons. Then in 1977, in 9th grade, we put on the stage production of Godspell!! It was O AWESOME!! So many people loved it, te actually demanded we do another weekend!! It was the highlight of my high school experience!! Thank you for this interview. Brought back so many great memories!

I think she was tremendously appealing and beautiful in the movie. But - thanks be to God - she did not "turn me on", so I was able to really "get it" with her playing in the movie. Most of the songs in which I see divine purpose (the work of the Holy Spirit) are from men, with women the hormones (mine and theirs) nearly always get in the way. I don't know for sure if I should apologise or congratulate, but with Robin (though she IS an attractive woman), what came through to me most was the untainted spirituality, beauty, purity, joy and innoncene of it. Just as it was meant to be. So her singing "Day by Day" is a wonderful, truly spiritual thing for me, and it makes me feel very close to her, I must say. The Holy Spirit was with her, whether she realised it or not.

Wondered who Robin's role in the production correlated to Jesus' actual disciples or even inner circle of followers. "Day by Day" is a brilliant song that teaches about how to become intimate with God. I was drawn to Robin's relationship with Jesus in the production which certainly seemed to demonstrate a Devotee's love for The Master!!!

It's a great comment, and John, and one that for example might apply to Robert Powell or Jim Caviezel, who both played Jesus. Powell had a "complex" situation for years after, perhaps through to today, as he did sort of get it while doing it, but also wanted to keep working aftewards and not be type-cast. The Polish actor Piotr Adamczyk played his compatriot Pope John Paul II in 2 movies and really seemed to be like him - a problem for the actor who was keen to play comedy roles, and for example to pursue crude humour from time to time. In each case, the actors are doing a job, which takes a long time (with re-shoots) and is hard, at times tedious work. It would be hard (though surely not impossible) to acquire, maintain and retain for longer periods spirituality on that basis, even if we do seem to see itwhen Robin looks at Victor as they sing "Day by Day". But then we are the audience, and we see (and "see") what they don't! The beloved Holy Spirit is enigmatic (as Jesus told us) and active, but for Him the life-versus-art boundary is very blurred. But of course He wants to inject God's meaning and love and truth and mercy; and inspires artists in that direction. But the beneficiaries may or may not be participants in the film-making (who may not even realise the transcendance they are achieving). It is entirely possible that Schwartz in his play at least (even David Greene in the movie) wanted to parody and play games with The New Testament, but of course the Spirit will NOT permit that, at least not in a piece of art that helps God work His purpose out. This is after all a movie in which Jesus and Disciples are clowns who naturally do zany and silly things, as well as various 1970s-type things. It would be easy for it to achieve nothing much at all... But what is the overall impression? For millions of us divine, moving, thrilling, a source of joy and religious inspiration. People turn to Jesus, and stay with Jesus, because of it. It may well be that Shakespeare was reached by the Holy Spirit too, even though his plays are not very overtly religious. But still, in Henry V he wrote: O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention. A kingdom for a stage, princes to act, and monarchs to behold the swelling scene! (the Holy Spirit can take the form of fire, and if we ascend the brightest heaven we transcend into divinity) "But pardon, and gentles all, the flat unraised spirits that have dared on this unworthy scaffold to bring forth so great an object: can this cockpit hold the vasty fields of France? or may we cram within this wooden "O" the very casques rhat did affright the air at Agincourt? (interesting that Shakespeare recognised that actors might also be spirits who COULD be raised - and of course the raiser of artistic spirits is the Holy Spirit "O, pardon! since a crooked figure may attest in little place a million; and let us, ciphers to this great accompt, on your imaginary forces work" The actors in "Godspell" were - at minimum - ciphers (numbers) in the great accompt (account), and they were pretty good at working on our imaginary forces. Through the Holy Spirit, Christianity benefited, new people became Christians out in the real world. But not necessarily those who "put on that play"

@@jamesgeis It was the 1970s. It’s like a hippie version of Jesus Christ superstar. The guy that wrote it did it as a masters thesis in grad school. He got the part about them being clowns from a book he read. Think about clowns back in the day. The fool the jester. It’s a hippie version a early 1970s version of the passion of Christ or Jesus Christ superstar. We can’t look at these things from today’s modern perspective. You have to put it in the context and understand the times that it was written and performed. Remember, Jesus was treated like a common criminal. he was treated worse than a common criminal in fact. Godspell is absolutely is celebrating Jesus and his teachings. The entire entire play, which was then turned into a movie is a series of parables put to music. Jesus as Superman is completely completely appropriate. Remember this is Art. You have to understand parables analogies and metaphor. Rock music has obscure lyrics that you have to interpret because they want you to think about it. It’s not country music where they spell it out like a kindergarten story.

@@jamesgeis And if you wanna have a very narrowminded organized religion view of what you think Christianity is then that’s on you. Again, how old are you? Clearly you don’t understand the climate of the early 70s. It was a very innocent time. It was hippies and flower children And Jesus, in fact, would be far more pleased with this then modern organized religion. I can promise you that. And if I need to explain that to you, then you don’t understand Jesus and Christianity. Jesus and Christianity is not the church. In fact, the church is often everything that is wrong with modern Christianity. Because the church is not Christianity.
