You can't have a good turn without a good preparation, and in partnered dancing, that generally means a good rock step! In this video, I talk about some partnered turning basics as well as how to feel and respond to rotational rock steps so you can have the best turn possible. We'll also cover moves like the open position tuck turn, pop turn, and other faves.

Really nice. Love your approach. (And the fan cam!) Side note: the fancy Elbow Catch move (at 8:45 or so) is a venerable West Coast Swing move. Been around for decades. Todd Y is great for dropping in stuff from other members of the extended family of Swing-derived dances. West Coast Swing especially is fruitful for Lindy inspiration, as they have playfully developed hundreds of variations - all pure leadable-followable - in the middle of a pass or Swingout (3&4, 5-6), a zone that Lindy Hop has almost completely ignored. Which I find kind of weird, given that innovation and experimentation was a core, major part of the entire original generation’s dancing and value system, along with absorbing (stealing) and adapting just about every good dance idea that was happening anywhere else at the time. I really like it that in your videos you encourage that kind of playful experimentation, while remaining true to the rhythm and momentum and spirit of the dance.

Glad it's helpful, glad you're digging the ceiling fan cam, and I'm glad you dig Todd! Yes the man is a brilliant thief of moves from other dances. And that's all part of it! Learn from everything. Having other dance influences is only bad if you aren't flexible.

Thanks for this! Love Brooks' input on leading, and the ceiling fan cam was surprisingly helpful! I had to pause video to make Patreon subscription--i was enjoying the solo jazz too but this is too much not to support. I feel like I knew this topic pretty well already, but will definitely rewatch the dancing clips.

Yeah, the fan cam is super janky, but I figured that was the best point of view to see the shapes. I'm so happy it came across!
