Coos Bay's Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery is the final resting place for nearly 2000 people who lived and worked in the region during the late 1800s. Although some of the more noteworthy people are still remembered today - commemorated through local streets and landmarks - most of those interred in the cemetery are memorialized only through their gravestones. Join public historian and cemetery volunteer Becky Soules for a special program exploring some of the untold stories of these overlooked residents of the Coos Bay region. Learn about immigrants making the area their new home, Civil War soldiers seeking new opportunities in Oregon, women struggling to support their families, and young children dying from all-too-common accidents and childhood diseases.
Becky will also share information about the new preservation initiative, "Partners to Preserve our Pioneer Cemetery," that will repair and stabilize over 100 of the cemetery's gravestones in the upcoming months.
