This is a song written by Fanny J Crosby, one of somewhere between 6 to 9 thousand that she wrote. It's hard to know the exact count because she was so prolific that she used around 200 pseudonyms to write them. This song has been published in almost 1000 hymnals. What a wonderful story this lady had, and she was blind from about 6 months old.
She was quite a celebrity in her day, even being the friend and guest of presidents! Martin Van Buren became one of her friends and admirers, as also did President James K. Polk, whom she visited in the White House. But the most interesting of her Presidential acquaintances was that with Grover Cleveland.
