Passenger lands Florida plane after pilot falls ill - BBC News

A mystery passenger landed a plane solo after his pilot passed out.
The unidentified man's voice was heard in public flight recordings telling the airport tower that he had "no idea how to stop the airplane".
An air traffic controller who teaches new pilots helped guide the man down to Palm Beach International Airport just after noon on Tuesday.
The two met on the tarmac for a hug, but reportedly did not exchange names.
"I've got a serious situation here. My pilot has gone incoherent," the man was heard saying over the radio from around 9,000ft (2,750 meters) in the air. "He is out," he added.
Asked for his position, he responded: "I have no idea." He said only that he could see the Florida coast ahead of him.

I LOVE THESE STORIES. I remember watching another video where an elderly man was in a plane with a pilot who had a heart attack & passed. The elderly man safely landed the plane too.

Apparently, while he was inexperienced in actually flying a plane, he often seated beside the pilot of that aircraft for many of its flights. Because of this, he was at least familiar with some of the instruments, controls and flight procedures of that plane. He also knew of the plane's tail number

Wow! Last night I watched Mentor Pilot's 'can a passenger land a plane' on RU-vid and this morning I woke up to this on the news. Amazing what this passenger did, he saved the pilot, himself and stopped the plane from hurting anyone else. This guy and ATC are heroes!

BBC incorrect, not a "bouncy landing", flight instructor called it perfect, and you can see that on the video. Once down, the hero radioed he had no idea how to stop the plane, just an amazing individual.

Holy sh*t! Thats nightmare fuel for sure. This senario was proven to be possible on myth busters, but still i can not imagine the terror. An unbelievable story to tell the grandkids. Just wow, he must have felt so relieved back on the ground..

I mean a scenario doesn't have to be proven by the myth busters to be real, the pilot could faint for whatever reason and a passenger would have to take over. Has happened plenty of times.

I remember reading on a collection of these stories previously, that experienced pilots & air traffic controllers can tell from the first radio message what the outcome of the case is going to be & gotta say, that's obvious with this one. This guy is just so calm & relaxed! "I have no idea, I can see the Florida coastline, but have no idea on anything going on around me or where to get any of the info you're asking for, but that's cool, I'll just sit here & maybe have a beer while you get your act together & figure out how to help me, nothing to worry about" lol That guy has balls of steel!

I failed my pilot exam twice because the math was harder than college algebra but i've still steered planes before. College algebra is 1 problem per page which wasn't that bad but pilot math was even harder. At least I can skydive anytime.

Landing at p. B. I a was OK but why not Boca Raton was it because that P. B. I. A. Is a jet port with extra energy equipment? 20 miles east of Boca Raton he may have been able to land Boca Raton Airport either way great job on the landing. Though living in the Philippines I'm originally from the area of where this happened

I've checked this story from American and Canadian news sources and yet the BBC has possibly the best coverage and the closest, clearest videos of the plane.
