Passing Chords and Passing Notes

Any chord progression wants to resolve somewhere. For example, the simple progression F major, G major and C major resolves to C major. The chord in the middle, G, can be thought of as a passing chord. That makes it "weaker" compared to the target, C. The listener's ear is actually willing to "forgive" changes to voicings, scales and pretty much anything when it comes to passing chords! Let me show you in this video how you can use this to really get away with some interesting chord voicings and tensions that make the progression actually sound fuller and more mature.

Brilliant- many thanks. So begin in one key then do anything as long as final chord is resolved. Love it

thanks for sharing, this helped me get a better grasp on when it is more appropriate to play notes outside of the scale. Ive never noticed that it usually occurs on the 5 chord in 2-5-1 and then resolves
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 8 лет назад
+Deon Zoss It can also happen on the 2. Just like with a magic trick, as long as it happens "fast enough" and the listener's mind doesn't perceive it as a "target" chord or note, you can pretty much get away with anything :)

Accidentals in key of C major. C,D,E,F,G,A,B normal voicing The accidentals - C#,D#,F#,G#,A# all played with either diminished chords or slash chords. For example play, D min9, D/F#(D major in right hand F# in left/bass) E/G#(E major in right hand G# in the left) upto an A minor. then B/G(G major right hand, B left hand), A/C#(A major right hand C# left hand) and back to Dmin9. The accidentals can be played with dimished also so D/F# can instead play F# dimished etc. You can play up the scale chromatically this way and it sounds amazing. I would love to hear/see your interpretation of this. Have you covered this already in a previous video ? Direct me to it if so please :) Thank you

Thanks for the lesson! I'm a novice at the keyboard, and I find your teaching style quite refreshing -- you focus on generalizable techniques as opposed to teaching a very specific example. But I think what you're playing is known as an altered dominant. If you change the F# to an F, it sounds quite pretty (IMO), as opposed to "almost passable".
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 8 лет назад
+twifkak Well it's a lot *less* passable compared to the original G. Some listeners will have a more mature ear and, like yourself, like a bit of dissonance now and then. It's a bit like sugar: when you're a kid you want to put it in everything. When you're older you learn to appreciate the bitter taste of beer or the sour taste of aged cheese. I'd say my particular passing chords in this video are a bit "sour" :)

very very nice. thank you. why do you put the g-flat in for the second chord (the "5") at the end? sounds good, but do you have Any random insight as to why?

@wildroot2762 7 лет назад
Unfair. You did kept the G. You kept G bass and B, 1 and 3. The rest can be altered as long as its not too bad. The 5 can almost always be omitted or altered. Another thing. I didn't see what I would call a passing chord. Those were the main chords in a II - V - I. To be considered passing, doesn't something else have to be thrown in,for example, a half step before or after the II or V, or use some kind of substitute for the half steps.

When you resolve to the tonic chord does it have to be in root position?

I am in grade seven and my music teacher is making us do a task that requires passing notes... I have a few questions, how may fingers can you have on each hand, do you always need the g, do you need to use both hands at once doing the passing notes?

I like the way you think about piano. Why don't you put a video up on your channel's home page that explains what exactly the Mangold project is?
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 8 лет назад
+Archibald McGlasson The reason I don't have such a video is because there is no project. I somehow ended up with the name as an inside joke among friends and it stuck. Now my channel is too popular to change its name. I curse myself for not having called my channel "AmazingPianoLessons" or something like that :).
