Nice informative video. I have grown a Passion fruit climber in front of my house in Heritage city of Mysuru, Karnataka, India and in 3 years of tending, it has grown upto 50 feet and has reached our terrace. So far it has given about 300 fruits and still growing bunches of them. Since the fruit has nutritious value, I have been giving these fruits to slum area schools where juice is prepared and consumed by poor children who are under-nourished. I have also prepared seedlings and when they sprout in about 2 months and develop tendrils and ready to climb, I plant them in public parks and distribute to people who would like to take care of this wonderful value added passion fruit. I have almost become passionate about propagating this fruit.

Dear friends I have bin using my passion fruit juice on my salads and find it extremely testing I have my passion fruts claiming um my mago tree and find it amazing so when I'm not packing mangos I'm picking passion fruit more amazing is the fact it's bin putting out fruits for the past 6 months and all the local criteris are finding their way to my my mago tree the squeals tend to try to eat them hanging in the tree but if drop from the tree they get disputed by all the creters! I'm thinking of planting avocados and mangos with passion fruts on their trunks so I'll be harvesting 3 different fruts at different times off the year

I really recommend doubling up on the nylon ties, or even using galvanized wire instead. Nylon ties are no secure enough even though very strong at the beginning. They can crack use to cold, sun, age. Be careful out there, vinyl coated rebar is heavy, and it is overhead.

I found your video by accident and I have never been so exited to watch an almost 40 minutes video on RU-vid. Seen your garden with the banana trees,avocado trees and the passion fruit vines made me homesick. I grew up in Puerto Rico where is normal to grow those plants in our backyards. I bought on Amazon 4 baby pasion plants of your variety, which for my surprise arrived very healthy, and just recently I repotted them into bigger pots and placed them outside. The reason for the pots is because I want to be able to bring them inside when the winter comes. I live in north Texas now and I read the plants could die when the temperature drops. Any tips for growing them in pots? In your experience, will they die in the winter if I transplant them in the ground? In the winter is normal in here to get temperatures below freezing and couple of days, below 0. Thank you so much for your video, it has been very helpful. I'll be subscribing. Keep the good work.

he charles, another great video, very infomative. i bought another fuente and bacon alvacado, and a papaya tree, today from homedepot. i put them in shade, added some c-90, and organic plant food. just wanted to say thank you. i must continue watching the rest of your video. much love and god,s peace be with you also i meant to mention that last year i bought my passion fruit vein. this year i noticed about 7 flowers on them and a few days later, the flowers had gradually closed up and hit the ground. i notice more developing, and a trail of ants on them. i think the ants are getting the pollen on the flowers not allowing the flower to be fertilize for fruit. i really don,t want to harm the ants, but i may not have a choice but to put a soapy spray on my passion vein.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Good evening Rafiqa11, Always great to hear from you! What is the "C-90" you mentioned above? Regarding the ants on your passion fruit vine, please do nothing; unless you notice that their are white flies, aphids, or other sucking pest that the ants are harvesting on the vine? For some reason, ants are attracted to the sweetness the plant exudes through the flowers and leaves, but 90+% of the time without any harm to the plant. A percent of the flowers on my vine fall as well due to a variety of factors, such as lack of pollination, temperature, fertilization, watering pattern, etc... Also, as the plant gets its roots established, it will continue to gain vigor in size and fruit yields! Please keep me posted on your growing successes! Also, be sure to care for your newest additions through our upcoming heat wave. Young avocados and papayas are susceptible to our upcoming 100+ degree days. Much love and God's peace be with you too! :-) Charles

My favorite thing to do is use the passion fruit and make a curd like lemon curd and put it over cheesecake or cheesecake squares. I also make a filling for cakes. Add it to goat cheese and make a smear for over pancakes like they do in hawaii. Look up Liliko'i for recipes. These are selling for $1.99 each at Sprouts right now. So easy to grow and gorgeous flowers. I am having great success starting new plants from seeds. Took months for them to sprout, but now they are doing great!

I've noticed the yellow passion lives for decades on islands. We had a vine on our ranch in Fiji and it's still living and giving fruit. I ate 100's of fruits off it growing up. I tried growing vines here in Central Valley CA but the hot summer is brutal (triple digits) so I'm trying purple passion now.

Hi Charlies. Very informative video. I live in the Los Angeles area as well and started growing the same passion fruit variety as you have a little over a year ago. I planted it in a corner of my yard and used the metal fence with several horizontal rails as a trellis. Eventually the vines grew like crazy so I just let it grow wild on the roof of my garage. So as you can imagine, this year is my first year of fruit production. As I've been harvesting the fruit and also dealing with rodents like rats, I've noticed some leaves dying off esp. on the vines closer to the main trunk. Is this normal? Another thing I noticed also is that the vines closer to the main trunk have become thicker and more "woody". I'm sure you know what I mean. I know you said that you usually prune back 80% of the vine to the main trunk. How many vines do you leave on the main trunk and do you ever prune entire vines back to the main trunk? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Dave

Passion fruit can be grown in five gallon buckets. I have all my vines on a wire grid up on eight foot posts. It provides good shade and the fruit just falls when ripe. We get about one fruit per year per sq ft without fertilizer. You can grow the vines over a roof. The fruit rolls off!

Hello Laura Flasch, I am glad to hear that you are having such great success growing these vines as well! Passion fruit are harvested easily off the ground-- and they get even sweeter the few days following harvest. If your neighbors do not collect the ripe fruit, that will be huge invitation to wildlife, including opossums, raccoons, rats, etc... I do not have a problem with any of these creatures, but when excess fruit fall, they will make the daily rounds to the plants and be in search of your fruit too. Keep me posted on your passion fruit growing successes! Charles :-)

First, what are you using to fertilize it? I'm amazed at how productive your passion fruit vine is! Secondly, whatever purple variety I have the roots are incredibly invasive. Never again will I have it growing in one of my 8'x 4' square foot garden beds. The roots not only took over most of the bed, it was also the worst root knot nematode infection I've ever seen. I read that you should graft the variety onto the yellow variety, which is nematode resistant. So that's what I did. But it's not nearly as productive as yours. BTW, thank you for the Florida nursery reference. I see they have a couple of different yellow varieties, which is interesting since I had such a difficult time finding seeds. Also, I may need to get your IV 3 in 1 mix. Since pruning my passion fruit vine way back the summer sun scorched the trunk.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello David, (1) Any organic fertilizers, granular and liquid, fed lightly on average 1x per month through the growing season. Passion fruit are more prone to chemical fertilizer burn that most plants, and it wont be organic if using chemical methods. Also, I have not noticed my passion fruit variety to ever have an invasive system. On average the plants roots grow in an area about 2-3 feet from the plant and can be easily uprooted without tools... even after 5+ years of growth with one or two hands. (2) Regarding seeds, I would recommend starting with proven to perform cuttings for productive parent plants to ensure that you get exactly what you are seeking. Seeds, just like human children, differ somewhat from the parent. Seeds could produce less than desirable taste, yields, quality, etc.... My worst experience with passion fruit is loss due to early winter pruning, rather than waiting until early spring, AND loss due to over feeding/ disrupting the shallow roots. Therefore I am very careful not to disrupt the shallow roots ever. Lastly, with average life of passion fruit being 7 years, I have lost some plants in as little as 2-3 years... So propagation by way of cloning (cuttings or airlayering or grafting) should be practiced every year to preserve the genetics of your desirable selections. Keep me posted on your passion growing successes! Charles :-)

Hello galaxy trekker, Thank you so much for the compliment! And it is great to hear that your having such great success growing passion fruit in NJ! Great news!!! There are snakes in our area, however, I never really thought about them hanging out on the passion fruit vine. Always a risk... if there are snakes in your area.... and the more dense the passion fruit vine, the more likely to attract more "pests". I know that there have been mice, rats, raccoons, possums, skunks that have all been reaping the benefits of the passion fruit vine and fruits that fall before I collect them. By keeping the plant smaller, and more manageable, there will be less pests and risks of lost fruit. Charles :-)

During winter time do you make a greenhouse for your passion fruit or cover it. Will the frost kill my passion plants if I don’t cover it.?

How do you know when your cutting is ready to be transplanted from the plastic cup with vermiculite/perlite to a bigger container with a different kind of soil? What kind of soil do you recommend for the second stage of propagation? Thanks a lot!

Hi! from Japan. Thank you for your very informative video.I am growing yellow passion fruits. They are very sweet and delicious,probably better than purple ones. But They do not set fruits for themselves. Is it possible for them to accept the pollen of purple ones? I hear this is not succesful .How you do evaluate?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Xyossiy, Great to hear from you all the way from Japan! :-) Even if your variety is self fruitful, research supports that cross pollination between related (not identical; such as a non-yellow variety of passion fruit) can (1) increase yields and (2) increase the size of the fruit. This applies to many fruit trees, including grapes, apples, peaches, plums, avocados, mangos, etc, etc. Cross-pollination does not effect the flavor of the fruit, but does effect the genetics of the seeds that when grown will result in genetics of both parents that contributed to creating the fruit. This is also analogous to people with similar genetics that are more likely to pass their risk of disease to the children; compared to parents with less related genetics that together typically produce more disease-resistant offspring. Lastly, you should propagate (clone) your passion fruit vines from proven successful parent passion fruit vines by way fo cutting (as demonstrated in this video) or air-layering (as I have demonstrated in other videos using figs and lemons). I hope this explanation helps you in accomplishing more fruitful passion vines! :-) Please keep me posted on your growing successes! Charles :-)

I've grown passion fruit in Hawaii for 6 years along with papayas kale etc. and never bothered to learn much about them. I bought starts at the farmers market for 5 dollars .(red or yellow pretty equal qualities here.) I planted one on a dead lime tree and soon it looked like a green mound before the tree fell over. I never even thought of eating one that looked green still. I waited until they were purple or yellow. Green smoothies with banana and passion fruit were good. I have learned so much from your video , and your love of the plant and fruit really comes out. Great video for showing just how easy it is to build a trellis and it how will be so cool to have a beautiful green leafy shady canopy. thanks for your work.

Hi I am watching your videos since more than 2+ years and found all is of good standard and helpful. But not this one reg passion fruit, may think of redoing it. I have now few plants on a 1.2m wide trellis planted from seed 2 year back. Am glad it flowered recently in plenty for first time this month. But now it cannot be managed on trellis and it was not a good idea. What about idea of growing it like a curtain wall.?

How do you water this? I'm in Las Vegas and it's hot and arid. Do you think I can have success? Thank you
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Patti Hayden, If I was in Las Vegas, I would start my passion fruit vine in March/ April as the chance of nighttime frost has passed. Under good growing conditions, you will get the 30-60 feet of growth during the growing season, flowers and fruit! However, I am not sure how well your passion fruit vine will survive the winter nighttime low temperatures. However, there is a lot of research to support that in climates where the nights freeze during the winter, the plant will die back to the ground, and the roots will push new sucker growth in the spring as the ground begins to thaw. If you start you plants now, I would keep them growing active during winter indoors. Watering depends on the season.... During the spring & fall you may water 2-3 times per week... Summer may require daily watering (preferably late in the day so the roots remain hydrated all night). Also, you may want to experiment with plantings in different zones in your garden. Note: Passion fruit vines do well in partial shade (as they would be in the tropical rain forests). Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck! Charles :-)

@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Pallab Bikram Shah, I have not had that issue in the nearly 10 years I have been growing & propagating this Frederick's passion fruit vine. Manual removal is best, as you are doing. However, if the problem becomes too great to manage manually, you can consider one of two good organic practices for controlling pests: (1) neem oil, (2) spinosad (Captain Jacks), and (3) IV Organic. Be careful with the application of horticultural oils on hot days, even hot weeks, that can intensify the heat on the plant. Therefore, consider using IV Organic that has properties to cool the plant with natural garden oils. You can even add your favorite garden oils, such as neem, to the IV Organic products, as many of our customers do to create cooler plants while gaining the benefits of the garden oils spring & summer with significantly less risk of burn. Keep me posted on your passion fruit growing successes! Charles :-)

I have a Possum Purple that's about 1.5 years old from a rooted cutting. It flowered a tiny bit this spring but quickly became too hot, and there was no fruit. I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Do you think it could fruit this fall? Or will I have to wait for next spring? It's also worth noting to your viewers that in Phoenix, being that mine is potted, growth pretty much stopped and started to reverse (losing vine and leaves to dehydration and sun damage) during our summer.

Are all the Purple Passion Fruit vines 'Frederick' variety? I see many selling Purple Passion Fruit vines but don't say which variety. Should I assume they are Frederick? Frederick is very cold hardy and we need that for zone 9A. Anyone know? I want to buy one but all they say is "Purple Passion Fruit vine" not sure if that also means Frederick.

Selling plants legally through the mail is an involved process. There are state regulatory agencies involved. I live in the part of the United States that is under a quarantine for fire ants. If I were to sell plants through the mail, I'd have to get inspected to make sure I was doing it in a way that wouldn't spread fire ants. I'm not sure of the legalities of giving them away.
