***I WANT TO START OFF BY SAYING that the Monache Meadows has been becoming more and more popular. Every single day, more and more people are getting into overlanding. This place isn't as large, and traffic on this trail can be problematic. I recommend that you don't roll in with a large convoy. Can you vehicle get through this trail?
AWD crossover: see how your vehicle matches up to a Subaru or a 2019+ Rav4. If less capable, I would not recommend this trail for you. A vehicle with an older part time reactive AWD system like a 2018 or older Rav4 may really struggle here.
Large long beach Truck: I ran into a Ford F-350 long bed that got hung up on his rear differential. I stacked rocks for him to get unstuck.
2WD Truck: Because body on frame vehicles typically have good wheel articulation (flex), with intermediate driving skill, a 2WD truck can make it through in dry conditions. In wet conditions, it can be a nightmare.
I hope you find this information useful! Remember! The Monache Meadows has been getting more and more crowded, so it's a good idea to have a "PLAN B".

I'm not sure. I have a friends that visited the Monache meadows just last week. They said the trail is in worse condition compared to this video. I would advise going with a friend with a 4WD, just in case. The main challenge is driving up and "out".
@samofsiam
@samofsiam Год назад
Was just there in my 2017 Subaru FXT, and everything was all good except for the last part of trail. Compared to this video highlighted at 15:54, current trail had way more deeper ruts. I had to use a tow strap to get my car over them. Granted, I only had AT tires (225/65R17) with no lift. I would bring a buddy with a 4x4.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring How far can you walk? 200m or 20 miles, either will carry you into a nice forest setting. It is fun to walk hundreds of miles in backpacking (John Muir Trail, lookin at U), but it isn't absolutely necessary. Find Steve Wallis' videos about car camping on UToob. Do like he does, except park an older car at some trailhead and walk in a couple city blocks worth of distance and camp near water overnight. Just doing that will tell you about excess weight, and bringing just what you need. CHEERS.

Great video, but sad to hear this beautiful spot is getting overcrowded. Its (usual) emptiness is one of the reasons I love it. A friend took a stock 2WD Toyota Highlander through it. Getting out we had to strap him on the last obstacle, but no real damage aside from the exhaust shroud.

That 5th gen forester made that last obstacle look easy . Gonna have to lift my 2021 forester and throw some AT tires 😁
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 года назад
Skid plates and A/T tires is my first recommendation. A lift will be a nice addition. While all the 4 cylinders handled similar, different like choice and momentums were used. Xmode 2.0 is definitely an improvement over the first version. I’m surprised the Rav4 struggled and I think it may be a combination of his stiffer eibach spring lift reducing wheel articulation and line choice.

Ah! I’m so jealous of all the cool vehicles you get over there in Australia 🇦🇺, you have a much better selection! All we get here for mid sized SUV with truck (Ute) capability is the Toyota 4Runner and the Jeep Wrangler. These vehicles are considered “soft” to your country 🤣. I wish we got the Ford Everest, or the Holden Bison. I can’t believe USA car manufacturers are too afraid to directly compete with Toyota.
@jamestom2510
@jamestom2510 3 года назад
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Yeah we are the opposite of you guys in some ways, plenty mid sized SUV but we also have the larger utes which would still be small compared to yours. Our diesel utes are really popular and they are smaller than your pickups and utes up there. To be frank i think most of your larger utes would struggle for road space down here especially in the cities. In the Outback they are great but require a small house loan to buy....

@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 года назад
Sean Miller coming from a Subaru Forester with a blown transmission, I did all sorts of research before I picked up the passport. My original choice was a 2019 Tacoma, but I couldn’t fit in one comfortably. What made the Taco a “hard pass” is the person behind me would have 3 inches of leg room, maybe 2, all I know is it was really bad. I knew about the 2 inch lift (actually there’s a 3.5 available too. No gains to the rear differential, but it would help with my breakover angle). At the time, Because of the reliability issues with the Subaru, I was only looking at 2 car manufacturer’s, the big T and H. 45k miles and zero issues whatsoever, I’ve only had an alignment once after I installed my lift. Everything is still within spec. The sway bars I stumbled upon. It’s so easy to disconnect the rears, but it’s very very difficult to disconnect the front sway bars, and it appears that I’d only be able to disconnect them a few times before the rubber seals wear out.

@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 года назад
K L it will! You just need to give it more ground clearance through talller tires or a lift. The RU-vid Channel primal outdoors had a Telluride for a few months and he had it lifted. The Telluride is considered to have a full time AWD system. It has a traction control and a 17:1 crawl ratio, which is above average for its class. The approach (17) and departure (21) angles, should be improved before attempting a trail like this. Additional ground clearance will improve these numbers. You can also see if you can trim down the bumpers.

is the AWD in my 2019 Nissan Rogue considered full time awd? It can be set to FWD/AutoAWD/LockAWD So far I have tested the system in sand in AutoAWD not even locked and it did great!
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 года назад
Umbra says that’s a good question. I believe any AWD system with those settings means it’s a part time AWD system. Take a Subaru for example, it doesn’t have AWD lock. That’s because it’s a full time system. Love or Hate youtube channels like TFL, they are a great resource to see how proficient AWD systems are. The Nissan crossovers have had difficulty on the 2 wheel roller test. For this trail, it’s best to use the Subaru’s as a point of reference. How would the Nissan Rogue do VS. a Subaru. That would help greatly in determining other AWD’s would do. Now... skill plays an insurmountable factor in all this. If we all drove like Ken Block, we probably wouldn’t need AWD or 4wd.
@moonsapling
@moonsapling 3 года назад
@@JonDZ_Adventuringthe 1st gen Forester I had taught me how to deal with open differentials and no TC. So really what I need is power front to back. The LockAWD when we tested it on sand did not wait for the front wheels to spin but its more of a "if you get stuck" gimmick. The AWD will most likely overheat after 30minutes of trail driving. Its okay in Auto mode tho. I think a lift kit, better tires, skid plates and a transmission cooler would make the Rogue somewhat capable. If all goes well I might make an Instagram account on the project!

Umbra says what I’ve been observing out on the trails is that “wheel articulation” is such a big factor in a vehicles off-road capability. There’s a fairly new RU-vid channel called engine adventures that takes a 2016 Cherokee trailhawk through some tests. 56:1 crawl ratio and a real rear locker make it incredibly capable, but he does talk about how bad the wheel articulation is, and how much better it would be if that was improved. I disconnect my rear sway bars and it makes a very big difference!
@moonsapling
@moonsapling 3 года назад
@@JonDZ_Adventuring do you disconnect them on trails only or thats just how you drive the Passport overall?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 года назад
Umbra says at first I would disconnect them only for trails. But when I first started disconnecting them, I didn’t know I wasn’t reconnecting them all the way. The “slack” has cause the treads for wear out and strip. Also, I should have been cleaning the threads prior to reconnecting. The mud and grit stuck between the threads also wore things out. This led my left rear sway bar end link to permanently disconnect. It’s a $18 part and easily replaceable, but I’ve found the ride to be very very acceptable without the end link. I feel the ride is more “Cadillac like”. Under emergency braking, things aren’t even sketchy like in some other vehicles. So, to answer your question, lately, I’ve been running without them.

Combat Cowboy it appears all the automotive manufacturers have taken note! Honda will either have a “trail sport” trim of their vehicles, or it will be an all new vehicle. My guess is they’ll do exactly what you mentioned. I hope they offer some sort of “real locker different” or even a low speed transfer case. The 2021 Crosstrek sport should get a nice little bump in performance with the extra 30 hp and x-mode 2.0! I’m not sold that “adventure” Rav 4:yet -it’s seems very front wheel drive biased, plus the “angry grill” hangs down too far for any real off-roading.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 года назад
Matthew Johnson the Rav4 adventure is crazy expensive. $35K! You can buy a Passport Sport for $33k or a luxurious EX-L model for $38K. Either the case, just more car and the best AWD system on the market right now. Well.... except for the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with its real rear locker. I wonder what the bronco sport will offer. It’ll directly compete with these smaller awd vehicles. It’ll have a 18:1 crawl ratio (Jeep Cherokee trailhawk is at 56:1, Rav4 at 16:1 and crosstrek at 14:1) but it might either have a real rear locking differential or a simulated rear locker like in the Passport. The awesome thing about the crosstrek is it’s still affordable! Should be able to pick up a base model for $23K, that’s the allure of Subaru’s, price! Some get the touring models and pay Rav4 Adventure like pricing.

Nicholas Lotito this is a very good question with a complicated answer. I’ll start off by saying that you probably won’t know how much capability you’ll end up needing until you get out and start offroading and overlanding. Do you have an idea about your end goal? Honestly? Because you don’t know, I have 1 single recommendation for you. A used Lexus GX460. Avoid the GX470, they’re not very fuel efficient. The GX460 recommends (maybe even requires) 91 octane fuel, but it’s been proven that you can run 87 with no detriment to performance, MPG or reliability. Here’s why this makes a great choice. Resale! If this vehicle doesn’t work out for you, you can probably sell it for as much as you bought it. The good news is this vehicle is extremely capable! If you’re looking to spend 33K, try to find a used one for 28K and then dump money into upgrades. The GX has so much aftermarket support. There’s touch screen head units you can upgrade them with. The GX460 also has a 6 speed transmission which will make it surprisingly fuel efficient for what it is. The 4runner and GX470 only have a 5 speed. I hope this helps!

@@itsnick37 If having a “compact crossover” doesn’t bother you, then look into the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek SPORT -185 hp., x-mode 2.0. I haven’t investigated the pricing, but you might be able to one for under 30k. With a 2 inch and a pair of off-road tires I don’t see better choice in this price range (of course I’ll defer to JonDz, whom I consider the Most knowledgable on this subject).

Nicholas Lotito with all that said, I love my Passport! I just don’t know if you will. It’s drivetrain bridges the gap between 4wd and a Awd, but with only 8.1 inches of ground clearance, the capability has to be “unlocked” and if you want to make one like mine, you’ll have to permanently modify the wheel wells to fit 32.1 inch tires. Toyota trucks need similar mods to for 33 inch tires, but their in a whole different class of off-road capability.
