If I were you, I would just apologize and assure them that your country is mostly safe, without bringing up the editing, as by doing so, you seem to be suggesting that the whole thing was either exaggerated or staged. You owe them an apology for that. I'm from Southern Africa too, even though not from Malawi.

Julian should stop acting so touristy and flamboyant. That behavior triggers robbers making them believe they found easy prey with a lot of expensive things to rob. Leave the bags in the hostel. only carry copies of your passports with u in a money belt under your pants. put a "fake wallet" into your pocket with a bit of cash to hand over to robbers in such situations and then dont fight back, its too risky. He should also stay closer at such places, be more of a protector. As a white person he stands out no matter what but still you guys could pretend a bit that you have some serious business going on in the area you visit , like having some connections with locals/administration just so that you are not seen as easy targets/tourists. only visit places that are known to be safe . Elsewhere only go with a local guide. Not wanting to sound like a smartass here . This could happen to anyone, including me. But its kinda worrying

Respect all but trust must be earned. As travellers you must be more invested in your safety. Go hiking with guides, have a wrist strap for phones & cameras. Thieves seek opportunities to strike especially with foreigners. Hope MJ gets well & good to know you're both alive but don't trust as easily. I bet many around there know the thief but no snitching.
The one thing I don’t understand is why rob a person who obviously is not rich .I remember a few years ago staying in a small hotel in Cape Town and one day one of the ladies who lived in Cape Flats wasn’t there to serve breakfast I asked the owner where she was and he told me she had been robbed whilst waiting for the bus. Get well. I respect my country Zimbabwe. You never encountered problems here. Even though the economy is tough , people and vendors here are honest and considerate, they won't try to rip you off or steal your luggage. Vendors will actually give you a generous discount or more. The lesson here is that we shouldn't listen to media lies (blah blah Zimbabwe is unsafe). Principles are more important than money, and economic problems don't mean the people there are prone to crime. We have discipline and values in Zimbabwe at social level. Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and Namibia seem to have a lot of criminal elements with $dollar eyeballs. That man in Zambia who tried to charge you $100 for a Zimbabwean Trillion Dollar note, and that vendor in Namibia who insisted on R200, not forgetting the knife wielding thieves who tried to mug you in full view of people. You got scammed in Mozambique and got attacked in Malawi
