Really amazing technique and artwork. At 6:50 when she was pointing out the importance of planning out the final artwork and making all the necessary decisions before you begin work on the paper or canvas, I have found that making sketches in a sketchbook can be extremely helpful with that. One can plan out every step and detail in the sketches so that when you begin working on the canvas you know exactly what you're going to do. Someone can make dozens and dozens of sketches and work out every last little detail before they begin. For example if someone wants buttons on a shirt to be really grainy and made of rough pastel unblended, and the shadows on the side of the button to be soft edged and blurry, that can not only be planned in the sketch but even what exact technique would be used to get that final result can be decided on and practiced on before you get to that part in the finished picture. Sketches can be done in any medium, even pastels or paints themselves. These would all be throw away sketches, their only purpose is how they would affect and help the finished picture.

Very inspiring and beautiful work. Really interesting with the primers and textures. Painting can be done without drawing abilities but pastels look like drawing is needed. My drawing is getting better but lordy, that's a lot of supplies and I'm a bit hesitant having copd and working with airborne particles. Lovely demo. Thank you.

@triciareust8626

Thanks for writing, and the paintings are pastel paintings on a prepared paper. The only medium used is pastel. You only apply the primer over the collage, not over the pastel layer. I hope you enjoy working this way.

Love this video series. Thank you for sharing Tricia. So inspiring to see these alternative techniques. Can you use clear primer on black paper to get same effect, or do you have to use black primer.
@triciareust8626
@triciareust8626 4 года назад
dear Candice, thanks for your kind comments and no, I don't use clear primer on the black Art Spectrum Colourfix as it does not dry perfectly clear on the black and I want the deep pure black to be under the bright colours with this technique. I have used other colours such as terracotta on terracotta paper etc for different effects, which also look great. Experiment and try different combinations out and you will find the ones that appeal!

@@triciareust8626 last question, what is difference between using AS Colourfix Primer vs gesso to create texture?
@triciareust8626
@triciareust8626 4 года назад
@@candicewoodard8575 dear Candice, differences - gesso is thoroughly opaque, so would completely cover and obliterate anything under it (for example any collage elements, or previous applications) so you would need to use the transparent AS Colourfix primer for that; gesso does not have as much tooth as AS primer so would not hang on to as many layers of pastel as the AS primer. Gesso is fine for the texture technique that I demonstrate in the TV episode because it has the tooth it does, but as you see in the show, it is then covered with pastel. I have an article on gesso coming out in the Australian Artist magazine later this year, and after that is published, it will be up on my blog section of my web site. Best wishes for your success in your art journey!

Hi, loved your video with all the techniques; I found it fascinating. I was wondering if the pastel primer you mentioned is clear gesso placed onto watercolor paper or canvas? I have that and I have tried it but have found it to be TOO gritty -- chewing up my pastels. I tried sanding it very gently with the finest sand paper but then felt that I lost too much tooth. I can't seem to figure out how to get just the right amount. Do you have any videos on how to use pastel primer in the best way? Thank you.
@triciareust8626
@triciareust8626 4 года назад
Dear Renee, the primer is manufactured by Art Spectrum and is what they use to screen print on to the paper to make Colourfix pastel paper - they have it available in tubs. You can purchase a smoother version or the original. It is not clear gesso - I have used that and it does not dry clear enough for me - an important factor especially when I want to pastel over layers of collage and colour. I demonstrate for art societies and at workshops regularly, but I don't have any other videos on using pastel primer, but hope to put together my articles and blogs on that subject together in the future. I am glad you enjoyed the processes and I hope you have success in trying them!

dear viewer, "Softened Grafton" is a pastel work on Art Spectrum Colourfix, where I prepared the paper by adhering a collage and some texture. I painted the background with wet pastel, allowing it to drip so that the effect would enhance the feeling of water. I then applied soft pastel. The scene is the river behind my auntie's home in Grafton, in NSW, early one morning.
