As a "christian" pastor, I'm sure your respectfulness for the mormon faith was greatly appreciated by Mormons. But even though some things are similar, there are some doctrinal differences that I think should not be overlooked.
@@nathanbigler Its not wrong to study about Mormons, Jehovah Witness, 7th Day Adventist, Muslims, Buddhist, Catholics etc...but when are serious conflicts with the bible likes Catholics have ( I was one) then there is a problem when they refer to themselves as Christian's. So getting spiritual guidance from books other then the bible requires discerment
@@nathanbigler Thank goodness. Also an exmo (they can pry the nickname mormon from my cold, dead hands. I served my mission at the height of the "I'm a Mormon" campaign, when the first Meet the Mormons movie came out. Every other prophet endorsed the title, starting with Smith, and it was more endearing to those outside the church, so- disrespectufully- Nelson can get bent), and most authors out of that religion have produced content that is so wrong. Callister, like others, needs to realize he's not as great as he thinks he is. Lund... I'm not sure that he's not a good one. I did like the Work and the Glory series, and he does have others I heard were great. The other big one off the top of my head is Wilcox. Most big name authors in that religion really should be avoided.
Hi Jeff, I found it disappointing that everything in this video seemed to focus on conspicuous differences... What about the plentiful paintings of Christ or other symbols or imagery of Christ?
@@CottonWoodBlues Thanks for commenting... yes, I know what you mean. In fact, I've touched on some of those differences in some of my other videos. That said, I know very little about the LDS church and I'm in the initial "exploration" phase. Looking to learn AND share as much as possible. Thx for watching! :)
I am an atheist very interested in religion, and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate how respectfully you approach speaking about different beliefs. It is refreshing.
I have committed to watch and comment on each video this pastor published on the church in this series. He is awesome and mostly fair in what he is portraying. I am getting the sense that he is not trying to trick anyone. While he admits he doesn't believe the church to be true, he is depicting it fairly, without too much criticism. As an example, in this video he discussed the absence of crosses being sold, but then explains most Christians didn't start the practice of crosses until recently anyway. He was told by someone that the church focuses on the resurrection, which is a fair statement, but not complete. The cross is not taboo in the church but the real representation of Christ in the church are the fruits of the people who have accepted Him... So love/charity is the Hallmark or sign of Christianity in the church. What was largely missing from this video are the books, paintings, and statues of Christ. I don't know if that was purposely left out, but it is the most glaring omission. For the kids, there are also bible figurines for them to play with, but the selection is not as complete as it is for the Book of Mormon. So Noah would be available, but Ezra or Habakkuk for example will probably never be seen. If you watch carefully, you will see pictures of Christ throughout his walk through this store. It is interesting to see what stands out for him. This video is mostly fair and of course completely void of antagonistic comments. Enjoy.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I appreciate your perspective and genuine curiosity. It is so important to reach out with love and friendship to all people of different faiths and work together for the common good. God is Great and Christ is my Savior🙌
I'm a bishop in the Church or Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I've loved your exploratory series on the Church. I think you've been very fair in your portrayal and can't wait for you to find more answers as you bump into more questions on your show. I live in Utah and keep thinking it would be great to catch up some time to learn more about you and your own religious journey. Thanks!
Hello Bishop my name is Adam Blair and I am a member of the church as well and as you know if he keeps searching he will find answers and gain knowledge beyond measure. The scriptures have helped me to understand so much. I found after reading the book of morman multiple times and all the other doctrines, Doctrine and Covenants, Doctrines of Salvation, and some of the other biographies of the presidents and then after all of that I read the Bible and it was amazing how much I understood. The church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints is the Lord’s church restored to the earth today and I know this with all my heart.
I'm LDS. Hanging on the wall exactly above my computer right now is a beautiful cross necklace, owned by my roommate who is also a Latter-day Saint. Church members believe that the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ was an extremely necessary part of Christ's Atonement and God's Plan of Happiness, and we honor and are very grateful for it. Actually, in an LDS bookstore, I think you'll most likely find a lot more imagery of what happened before the Crucifixion: Jesus suffering for us in the Garden of Gethsemane. It's so fun to watch you go through a Latter-day Saint bookstore--I was smiling the whole time. Ever since I was a kid, I have always loved going to the bookstores.
We lived in Utah for 35 years, and we raised our 3 children in Provo, Utah. All 3 of our children served missions, and they all got married in Temples. Our oldest son served his mission in Brazil, and he married his wife in The Timpanogos Temple, our second son served his mission in Portugal, and he married his wife in The Salt Lake Temple, and our daughter served her mission in the Indianapolis, Indiana mission, and she married her husband in The Manti Temple. We are currently the proud grandparents of 7 grandchildren!! Two years ago, we moved from Utah to California for work. One of the things I miss most about living in California is not having Deseret Bookstores!! Now I have to order online. California has a lot of LDS Temples. My husband & I were both raised in the Church in California and we were married in The Los Angeles Temple. After we retire, we WILL move back to Utah!!
Love these videos! I'm LDS, living in the UK, so we don't have Deseret Book here ☹️ But I served my mission in Utah, and loved the experience of being there! Thank you for your channel - what you're doing is fantastic!
The Washington DC Temple is now open to the public for the first time in nearly 50 years. But only for the next few weeks. You should go and visit. It’s free and open to everyone, and it would be great to get your perspective.
I think one reason why this channel is pretty addicting to Latter-Day Saints is that it feels good to be "seen." When you are caricatured by a critic, you feel notably unseen. They don't see the many good things, and how you struggle to do the best you can. This pastor knows how to make people feel "seen."
Hello! The image on the front of the Hymns book is the "Salt Lake Tabernacle Organ". Also, Many of the items that you see at that store are not produced by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but are distributed by Deseret Book to support creators that are LDS and non-LDS alike.
Speaking of Hymns, it would be so cool to do a video of you reacting to LDS hymns. As a convert to the Church, one of the first things I noticed was how different LDS hymns sound from other Christian church hymns.
The imprint on the green hymnal is actually the organ pipes found in the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle building can be found near the Salt Lake Temple on "Temple Square" (The Temple happens to be in the process of being renovated right now).
I have really enjoyed watching your fair-minded videos and learning about your beliefs as well. Thank you for being respectful. There is one thing that I feel was omitted in this video. It is the vast amount of books, art and statuary pertaining to the Savior and his life. I think that this would have been one of the greatest similarities that would be found in both traditional Christian and Latter-day Saint bookstores. I think your audience would be interested to see that many of the art pieces are the same or similar. I would think that most of the art that has Christ as the focal point would be loved by Evangelicals and Catholics as much as we love them.
Great video! I’m A Latter Day Saint and also send my kids to a private Christian school. I really appreciate that we can discuss differences in a respectful manner and celebrate our similarities as we focus on the Savior. Love my Christian brothers and sisters.
Thank you for the kind respect you give. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint and would like you to have shown the beautiful artwork of Christ made by church artists. They are gorgeous and could be appreciated by many Christians.💕
I am happy that you are taking the time to learn more about the LDS church and that you are so respectful of our belief’s and how you point out the differences and the similarities in an intelligent way
One thing that you didn't highlight, but is a major part of every LDS bookstore I've been in, is the number of pictures, images, books etc that focus onJesus Christ. No, you won't find "crosses" by themselves much in LDS bookstore (maybe on a book cover or two), but you will find pictures and imagery of Jesus on the cross. The crucifixion is often depicted in our culture and church. We also have lots of "what would Jesus do?" decorations and imagery.
@6:10 that’s because we know the stories of our ancestors and all that they went through and suffered. We have read their journals and how much it means to us that they were willing to do the hard thing for the sake of the Church and civilization that we have now. ❤️🥰🙏🏽
Amen! I can’t imagine how hard it was for them and thank God for their strength and sacrifice so that we can all have what we have today. Their sacrifices were not in vain
This is the most respectful I've seen a Christian be towards the LDS church. I was expecting something a little more judgmental or confrontational. As an ex-Mormon I'm not a fan of the LDS church, but I still think they deserve respect. I haven't been to Utah in almost a decade so this video brings back memories. Thanks for sharing.
Your channel was just recommended to me on RU-vid, maybe because I think you and I had a discussion somewhere else. After watching this first video, can I just say a huge THANK YOU for the polite and respectful manner in which you explored this store (Deseret Book, it looks like) and how you didn't attack or mock abutting that you discovered!! I'm beyond grateful for this. I'm pretty laid back about the church when it comes to our public image (I kinda think the action figures are weird, but glad to hear you have games and puzzles too) but I'll gladly defend my faith and religion. I'm glad no argument is needed here!
Latter-day Saint here: First thing, thanks for the video. Second, in addition to what you mentioned about crosses being absent, I think another reason is a lot of places turn the cross into something commercial and cheapen its meaning. Diamond encrusted "bling" crosses, for instance, I think take away from worshiping the Savior in a respectful manner. Some may disagree, that's fine, I won't tell you how to worship, I just find those things a little tacky and even priestcrafty. Third, I don't know about others, but I got turned off a little by LDS and Christian bookstores for the simple reason that as I read more books, I realized I was absorbing a lot of other peoples opinions and interpretations of scriptures. That's not a bad thing, per say, gaining new insights can be a good thing. It just became overwhelming to me and I love this scripture in the Old Testament that helps me feel grounded when seeing an ocean's worth of Christian books: "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." -Ecclesiastes 12:12-13. God bless!
I must have spent at least £200 in my head looking at the stuff in the store. I am LDS and love all that. Thank you your comments were very positive and respectful so no complaints here. Just wish we had a huge store like that in the UK. Will watch another videos. Thank you
I've enjoyed your videos so far. It is interesting to me to get a Christian pastor's perspective. One omission where i would have liked to hear your perspective is on the statues and images of Christ in an LDS bookstore. We have given some of these to friends who are believers as housewarming gifts, and they have often commented on how inspiring they found them.
Amazing to see and appreciate an outsider's perspective. Thank you for your very respectful and objective perspective. I hope your channel keeps growing, which I'm sure it will.
It's very interesting to see a Deseret bookstore inside. They offer a multiple scriptures format that isn't available outside US. Generally, it has a store like this, a bit smaller, near to a temple. In Brazil, there is one on Sao Paulo and Campinas temples. I don't know if other locations have one. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I really like this content. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but I am actually just finishing up a masters in theology from a protestant seminary. It has given me great respect for the protestant side of things. Are you going to do any content with members of my church who have studied both sides?
Love these videos and I like how you portray our church as different from other Christian churches and not wrong. In all Christian denominations we all have similarities and differences that are important in understanding what we believe and why we believe it. Again amazing content!
You aren't a christian denomination though. You are the Church of Jesus Christ(Spirit Brother of Satan and created being) of Latter-day Saints. You are not Bible Believeing Christians who follow Jesus(Member of the trinity[I and my father are one], from everlasting to everlasting, in the beginning with God, creator God, only God.)
This is encouraging as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. It is so refreshing to see media that isn't trying to bash the Church. Thank you for all that you do.
Nice video! I found your comments interesting and funny because I can see the purity of your exploration or journey to find out the similarities and differences of the Faith of LDS with what I call traditional Christians😊 Keep up the good work! I am learning too looking through your eyes and perspective ❤️🙏🏽‼️😊
Jeff, I really appreciate your videos and your efforts to find commonality between Faith. Thank you so much for what you do! There was one thing that seemed to be an omission in this video that surprised me. Particularly when you’re looking at both differences and similarities in LDS bookstores and Christian bookstores, I am very surprised this video showed none of the Representation of Jesus Christ in that store. There is artwork, books, and many other things that focus primarily on Jesus. In my mind, I would see that as the biggest commonality that we have. Just curious why that was omitted from your video.
Great non-controversial video haha! I know that some commenters are saying that you pointed out an unfair proportion of differences. And ya maybe you didn’t see some of the similarities such as pictures of Christ due to the abundance of differences, but overall a fair reaction I think. We do have striking and important differences and I wouldn’t want to shy away from those!
Hay Jeff! I have no idea how your video got recommended, but I've watched a few tonight. (Yay night shift work) A bit about the pictures of the temples in case no one has said anything yet. First, we consider the temple the house of the Lord. That they are just as holy as the Old Testament temple. We try to keep reminders of the temple around us to remember the covenants we have made and what we have to do to be worthy to return. So many members will have a picture in their home of a temple that is special to them. Second, because there is no photography in a temple after it's dedication, we don't have pictures of the wedding ceremony itself. So many people will have pictures of the temple in which they got married as a reminder. So in my case, my wife and I are from Arizona and were married in the Mesa temple well before any of the other Temples in our state were built. So we have a couple of paintings of that because it's the one we grew up around and it's where we were married. We now live a few miles from the Gilbert temple and it's where our son was recently married, but we were also nearby when it was built and dedicated. So we have a miniature 3d printed temple I made. Keep in mind, none of this is "official doctrine" just how I look at paintings of the temple, but it works in my mind.
I have a bunch of friends that live close to the Gilbert Temple. One of them was a greeter at the temple when it was open to the public. Last name Ebellton. Another one has a small Airbnb she is so awesome and so is her husband. Last name Getzel. I have known Tara for many years. She was just coming back to church. She was super young and pregnant and so we took her under our wing. We have remained friends ever since. I love her like my own daughters.
This raises the question: Have you ever had a message come to your mind to do something, NOW. Or to go someplace or take a detour, and discover later that the outcome might have been terrible! This is personal revelation. Besides the revelation given to the prophet pertaining to the whole of the church, God in his love for us can give us personal revelation to help us in a situation or protect us from a situation. Thank you God and Jesus. Praise God!
I was surprised by how much I wanted the CD's! (; It's strange how much I love Christian and religious music as a Buddhist practitioner! I especially love David Archuleta.
Thanks for these videos, Jeff. I'm a non-LDS Christian originally from KC, but currently living in Ogden, Utah. Even growing up one city over from Independence, Missouri, I never met someone who identified themselves as LDS. When I moved here to Ogden a few months ago, I was curious about what the LDS church actually believes. I really appreciate how you explain it in terms I can understand. I've seen these Deseret Book stores and I was actually afraid that i wouldn't be allowed in. I frequently travel to StL and would love to visit your church sometime.
As a member of the church, it's very cool seeing all the experiences you're adventuring into. Love watching your videos and joining you on your journey of knowledge.
I think you did a very good (and accurate) job! 👍 If I heard this correctly, you basically mentioned, when you were showing a painting, something about when LDS pioneers left the Midwest to settle in Nevada. I may be wrong about that, but they settled in Utah. I also think you could have pointed out more things that we have in common (like artwork and books on Christ, the Bible, etc.). Still, you did a good job 👍
When I first joined the LSD church I went to a Christian bookstore. What I was shocked to find was a lot of anti- LDS literature. You will never find anti- anything in an LDS bookstore.
I love that you're looking for similarities. (And on the hymn book is a silhouette of the mormon tabernacle pipe organ. It's massive. You can see the inside of the tabernacle when the LDS church broadcasts their general conference every 6 months. And the mormon tabernacle choir sings at each conference in front of that pipe organ. There's plenty of that on RU-vid as well. They do sing beautifully.)
Glad to see a video on the Mormon church that goes beyond the typical introductory stuff…. Very interesting to see some of the real world culture of the Mormon community.
Tad Calister is an amazing author! I recommend the book "A Case For the Book of Mormon" It goes into a lot of cool stuff and is a really good introduction to apologetics.
@@gtf5392 I'm afraid I can't answer that question as I haven't read the "Case For Christ" book yet, although it looks like it may be a similar format. Tad Calister's book talks about various topic that help prove the truth of the Book of Mormon. So, it sounds like both books would be a similar format.
@@KnuttyEntertainment He talks about the witnesses, the doctrine (and how Joseph couldn't have just "made it up") and some archeological evidence as well. He goes a lot into the text of the Book of Mormon, and highlights important passages. He also talks about some arguments against the Book of Mormon and disproves them.
I lived in Utah for six years and went to Deseret Book so many times and have never seen those Book of Mormon action figures before and I feel kind of cheated by my local Deseret Book. Thank you for this video! I learned something new.
Thanks again for your respectful demeanor. One commonality that I think you might have stressed us the large number of artwork for sale, depicting the mortal and resurrected Jesus. Best, Mike Bennion
Pastor, you've given us all a super-interesting video here and I thank you for making it. This is a worthwhile project; and I appreciate your time and expense to produce it. Aside, correct typo at time 7:30, Change "Jospeh" to "Joseph". ~ Steven, Utah
I love this! I feel it is so important for all who believe in Christ to focus on loving Him & loving each other. Satan loves dividing us. With our basic knowledge and faith in Christ we can come together and focus on unity.
Oh!! We are focusing on the Old Testament this year in our Come Follow Me studies, and the church bookstore has books and other items, such as games for children, that focus on the particular book during the year that we study it, also at Christmas that I have seen, and they ALWAYS have plenty of books on ALL of the scriptures!! Probably other things too.
The SHOCKING amount of reverence and respect you gave in talking about the lds garments was the best I've ever seen any non-lds person give. Thank you so much!
Another excellent job. It was fun seeing an LDS bookstore through your eyes. Some things that are (sorta) normal to LDS members--like Book of Mormon action figures--were somewhat cringeworthy when seeing at them through your eyes. Once again, thank you for being so respectful. I appreciate your videos.
As a European LDS it is cool to get an actual look into the bookstore itself. What I am missing here is also the amount of context and background books the church also publishes on the Bible. Which would have also been cool to see, also for non-lds
I would love to see a one on one video with you and Jared Halverson, from what I understand he has his doctorate in theology. He mentions from time to time his education in the Midwest I want to say Tennessee but I could be wrong. Anyway he has the RU-vid channel Unshaken, he is definitely an excellent Christian educator. I don’t think there has been one time that I have listened to his lessons and been disappointed.
I did a work project in the '90s installing point-of-sales systems in a Christian bookstore chain. I don't recall much "anti-other religions" material, but it was surprising to learn that they had copies of the Koran and the Catholic Bible available among other books that didn't strictly meet their beliefs. I wouldn't be surprised if some stores of the chain stocked Books of Mormon because of local demand. They are businesses, after all, and aren't limited to just buying from their own publishing company.
So refreshing to see a video about the LDS church that doesn’t contain pre-conceived biases, or judgements. Just an honest depiction of a different denomination of the Christian faith, done with tact and class.
We are going to the temple on Wednesday and my husband already said… we can’t afford anything right now. The bad thing is they have Sweet Salts “next door” in the store!!! I told the owner… that is not fair!! Then it’s one store and I have to choose…. Books, picture, music, games, or dresses, tops, frilly things!! Pretty things. It’s just not fair!! And we are an hour and a half to the temple and book store.
Jeff, The church does has a history of using the cross a long time ago. Check our the article "Mormons and the cross" from Sept 2009 on deseret news. It has some interesting tid bits that probably a lot of members don't realize either.
The one thing you missed are the similarities, like “The Chosen” and pictures of the savior. The Hymns are about 60% the same songs you hear in other churches. I growing up LDS never knew that, until I started listening to other radio shows and podcasts. I was quite pleased and surprised.
I'm a FORMER atheist, THIS PAST MONTH I felt Christ and revealed he is real. One of the biggest subconscious issues I had as an atheist was what "Christianity" had become. Overall, it's 40 thousand different denominations and constant argumentation about who is right. This was a subconscious wall for me to overcome, and when I did, ONLY THEN did I FEEL CHRIST. ALL I KNOW is that JESUS is my savior and Divine and nothing more. I am ok with this, I love all people and know Christianity all accepts this SAME FACT. We need not argue and quarrel over verses, symbolism and specific doctrines. Rather Mormon, JW, methodist, Catholic etc IT DOES NOT MATTER. We NEED CHARITY AND LOVE and FOCUS ON THE SAME FOUNDATION= JESUS THE CHRIST. AND CHARITY. LOVE U ALL. also, appreciate your love for other Christians. Refreshing to say the least. EDIT: VERY IMPRESSED WITH you charity in this video after watching it all the way through, we need more pastors like you.
God gave all the religions for a reason. He’s trying to save humanity. In the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, we were given authority to enact priesthood ordinances. But all religions are a part of that process and walk back to Christ.
I am reading a book by Tad Callister right now. He is a great author and speaks frequently at General Conference. I would highly recommend any of his work.
At 4:25 the image on the front of the Hymn book is of organ pipes, not a temple, lol! If you’re in SLC you can visit the Tabernacle at Temple Square and see the world famous organ-you can even catch a concert!
@3:55 The reason for that is what the temple symbolizes, which is the plan of salvation. I want to make clear that we don’t worship the building, but rather we worship Jesus Christ by what we learn in the temple. So when I look at the temple, what I see is Jesus Christ and our walk with him back into the Kingdom of Heaven. Thank you for the respectful discussion here ❤️🙏🏽🌷
Thank you again for your respectful comments!! This is very nice and not very common to see R E S P E C T for other religions. We do, but thank you thank you!! 🙏🙏✨❤️🇨🇱🇺🇸👌👍 You area very nice Saint!! God bless you always!☺️🙏
Im surprised that so many former members of the Church hate the things they did before that they outrightly blast the Church. Whatever it is, i think Pastor Jeff is doing a good job of being an open minded christian who wants to understand the LDS more. If all people were like him and not just take words from disaffected members who are obviously full of biases, you will find that we really dont have anything to argue about especially on things which are Christ's. God speed to you Pastor Jeff!
Thanks for your openness and friendship! I invite you Pastor Jeff to explore (search) the Book of Mormon in detail! The full time missionaries are set apart and dedicate 2 years of their to lives to teach and answer questions that you have. This Book is the "keystone" of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A video of you exploring the Book of Mormon with the Latter-Day Saints would a blessing to all! Thank you for love of the Savior!
I appreciate the great effort you made in not denigrating The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I want to add that in that bookstore, and which I saw in your video, were pictures of Christ, and a statue (desktop) of Christ. The prophet, is the mouthpiece unto us of the Lord Jesus Christ, but he is not the head of The Church. Jesus Christ, of whom we name The Church after, is the head of The Church. We share many of the hymns which you sing, as well. We study the Old Testament every 4 years in our homes and in Sunday School classes, and the same for the New Testament. This year we are studying the Old Testament, in addition to our own studies of the Book of Mormon, which we also consider to be the word of God. We worship Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and pray for The Holy Spirit always, to be with us. All of this brings us great knowledge, and great joy. Thank you for your kindness to The Church!
Yes, last year the proportion of church history/Doctrine and Covenants literature was higher proportionally at Deseret Book than it is this year, you would see a lot more Old Testament since that's what we're studying as a church and in our families.
@@windywithachanceofsunshine5219 Yes! Where we differ from the other Christian denominations is that we believe that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three separate and individual beings. Jesus Christ is the Creator and Savior. The Jehovah of the Old Testament.
I highly recommend you read the Book of Mormon. I grew up reading the Bible. After joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints, the Bible made a lot more sense and became a richer experience in many ways. The icon in the cover of the hymn book is actually the tabernacle organ. You can visit the tabernacle on temple square. May I also recommend that you fly to Washington DC and attend the Washington Temple open house prior to its rededication after interior and exterior remodeling.
I’m Lds and have enjoyed all the videos I’ve seen so far because you don’t look at the differences and go into a rant about how everything you disagree with has to be wrong. You seem very fair minded and I won’t be surprised when visit our meetings and read the Book of Mormon you wind up joining the church. Thanks for the videos.
Wish I had known you were here. I'd have given you a real tour! You have to visit Missionary Mall, or Mr Mac. These are clothing stores devoted exclusively to outfitting missionaries. Plus, did you really come to Utah only to visit a bookstore? I see you visited Draper Deseret Book. I'm not far away from there.
Hey Jeff, you mentioned the hymn books in this video. You are correct that LDS have unique hymns. I am non-LDS and I remember listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing a hymn which at first I thought was going to be "What a Friend we have in Jesus" because of the melody but it turned out to be a hymn called "Israel, Israel, God is Calling". It was strange when I first heard it since the lyrics I was expecting to hear were not the lyrics the choir sang. Check out the hymn.
In the old days, the same tunes were used with multiple poems interchangeably. You can find resources which will indicate which lyrics can be used with the various traditional melodies and vice versa. I also was surprised, as a Latter Day Saint, to hear hymn melodies I was familiar with used in another church's hymnbook, but with different words.
@6:08 as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints I have loved the idea of getting action figures from the Bible as well. I think if there was some company that made them we would probably sell them in that store because the Bible is just as important as the book of Mormon is in our religion.
@Hello Saints I'm concerned that at about 2:29 in your video you said, "Here's one thing you will find in a LDS bookstore that you won't see in a Christian bookstore . . ." The reason for my concern is that the statement feels as if we are being told we aren't Christians. Our third article of faith states the following: “We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel." Now, later in the video, you did correct that and say something about the store vs. the "rest of Christianity." Thanks in advance for taking my contribution into consideration.
Thank you for these videos! I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I'm thankful for the respectful way you talk about our church. I would love to see videos like this about other faiths, even non-christian faiths, so that I can be more aware and respectful of others.
*⏩ New to your channel.* Enjoying your approach! Thank you! I understand there are differences between the LDS Holy Bible (I believe King James) and a Christian Holy Bible (King James version)? I also understand there are some interesting contradictions between the LDS Holy Bible and the LDS Book of Mormon. I understand they are told to go with The Book of Mormon when a conflict arises. Have you covered this?
@4:25 that is the pipe organ at the Tabernacle on Temple Square. The music pipes. Many of the hymns in the hymn book are Christian icons, like “How Great Thou art” and “sunshine in my soul” and “rock of ages”.
