For me, this song brings me out of depression and points me in the direction of Jesus. i'm a very strong Christian, so i don't know if i'm the only one who takes the lyrics in that way.
David Draiman, (vocalist of Disturbed) used to attend Rabbi school. He’s still a very spiritual person. His music tends to reflect that. His brother, Ben, moved to Israel to get closer to God many years ago and has stayed ever since. Listen to the song I’m Alive. That song used to motivate when I was a depressed teenager.
OMG ! There always has to be some "😤Better Than Thou-ist 😤" around correcting people about their knowledge of anything...and everything. That kinda thing gets "😴tired😴". Generally the point of music is the end result... not why it was originated. Please enter adulthood, and if ya can't, then please ..."😯" 🎆"Thank you" 🎆
The official music video reminded me of the book of Job. A firefighter suffers severe burns. He endures physical therapy all the while enduring the shocked looks of others. He manages to get his life back together with newfound love and hope. This song helped me through a divorce. I'm glad you listened with an open mind.
Last year when my mom passed away this song and the sound of silence got me through my grief. I play the sound of silence at my moms funeral. And the light for me was my bf. He was there for me through everything. All the tears, all the anger. He's my light in a time of darkness.
Yes to all...Its also reminds me of the reward awaiting...sacrificing for another. (greater lover vs. no good deed goes unpunished) Don't ever give up give in.
I suggested the same thing. After listening to the lyrics video a dozen times I was able to watch the official music video & sing in my head. The combination of the video & the lyrics made it that much more deep & profound for me
you gotta watch the video aswell aside from a video it shows a great story and explains a bit more the message of the song, disturbed is a deep band and they mostly sing about the disturbing aspects of society and try to show hope
I am very much not religious. I was raised Christian, attended Christian schools, Studied the bible as well as many other books on various religions. I can most certainly see where this song is not only inspirational to someone living with a tragedy, but to Christians alike. In every one of us there is darkness. Everyone backslides at times in their lives. Whether it be from God or even drug addiction, maybe even a horrible accident. That darkness you find in those situations will often times drive you back toward the greater good you seek, whatever it may be. For me personally this song came out when my wife was living in the hospital. I sent it to her and she did find it inspirational in her fight for her life. Sadly nearly 2 years later. Still living in the hospital she passed. I now use this song in the rebuilding of my life. It still gives me inspiration today to rebuild a new and healthier me. I was given a very short time to live myself for a multitude of reasons. Through hard work and diet most of those are now obsolete. Basically the point of my post. No matter what you believe or what darkness you find yourself in. Grasp onto what inspiration you can to find the light you desire.
I feel like this is the kind of song that you need to have all the lyrics laid out in front of you, so that you can properly analyze what they mean. David Draiman is an incredible lyricist
The biggest problem is that you are searching for some kind of religious meaning but there isn’t one, not intentionally, anyway. Also, if there was, it wouldn’t have been one about Jesus. It’s simply saying that sometimes, going through some really bad stuff can introduce you to some really good stuff. For an example of this, watch the music video. A man gets disfigured from a fire and thinks his life is basically over (darkness) but then, during his rehabilitation, he falls in love with his nurse (light) and he never would’ve found that light if it wasn’t for that darkness. Sometimes darkness can show you the light.
JonIsPatented well he is a pastor plus what's the issue if Christians do find religious meaning behind it. Just because you aren't religious for the one's who are the light in our life is Jesus and our relationship with him found while wandering lost in the world (the darkness) and if that bothers you then watch a reaction video not by a pastor.
Justin Walker of course yes I just meant that there wasn’t an intentional religious message. Like if you do find a message like that, and i easily see how you can. It wasn’t the original intent. It just worked out that way
Marcel Wilson-Lynch I don’t think there is an issue. I found the video fascinating actually. I never thought of it that way. I was just trying to express that if you find that meaning in the song it’s a sort of happy accident as it certainly wasn’t intended that way initially.
Most Christian rock and Christian metal music doesn't scream Jesus. Theres nothing wrong with looking for a spiritual meaning in non-Christian music. I consider music that can be interpreted either way great. Lyricists who can have a Christian rock band and have their music interpreted by a non-Christian or a non-Christian band that can be interpreted as Christian. Like for example Demon Hunter and Red are unapologetically Christian but they're lyrics can be interpreted into a non-Christian way and bands like Alter Bridge that can be interpreted in a Christian way. It's just good music. Dont try to restrict someone because they view lyrics a different way. That's the whole thing about music. It's meant to be relatable to the listener.
"The darkness" is definitely the tough parts of life you run into... and this song (in my eyes) is a torch of hope for anyone whose lost themselves... so to speak
I just heard this song for the first time earlier this week and it really spoke to me. I've been through some very hard things and life has seemed impossible so it impacted me in a big way and encouraged me when I heard it and it's cool to see you guys doing a reaction video to it a few days later. I definitely interpret the song as meaning that those horrible experiences can be what leads you to strength and healing, a happiness and appreciation for life that never would have been possible before.
The message of the song is that you have to go through struggles and fight past them to get something good. In the official video for example, a man is disfigured in a fire and afterwards is ashamed of his appearance, but with time he develops a relationship with his rehab nurse.
BigKat TV, before doing this reaction, did you read the story on this song? Plus, Disturbed did a video showing band playing in front of a burning building while having mini movie showing man been disfigured from an accident feeling distraught of being disfigured. During his rehab from his injures, man finds love with his nurse. I think man went thru traumatic accident (darkness) and (the light) is feeling loved from woman who loves him no matter of his disfigurement.
For the past month or so I’ve become hooked on watching about 10 of these “song reaction” channels for only songs that I love and have heard a thousand times over because damn near every time it feels like I’m hearing that song for the very first time and completely refreshes my damn soul and I love that song all over again.
I just discovered this song. I can tell you as a born again Christian it inspired me. I was baptized at an early age, walked away from God and became an atheist 20 years ago. Last year I tried to commit suicide because of marital infidelity but wasn't successful. At that point God put his saving grace upon me and brought me back out of the darkness into his light. That's what this song says to me. Our sins are the darkness and God is the light. When I first heard this song my soul was alight with joy and love. Everyone has different takes on what the song says to them. Glad you liked it. Another song that speaks to me is Disturbeds Sound of Silence. Very powerful song.
I get the darkness showing the light. I spent years battling drug and alcohol addiction, and in my lowest place I had a motorcycle accident that put me in a wheelchair. I couldn't stop drinking, I couldn't stop using, and I couldn't walk. God reached into my life, and today I'm 14 months clean and sober, and I'm on 2 feet again. Life still kicks the crap out of me at times, but because I spent so many years living in that awful hopelessness, I can appreciate what I've been delivered from and where I'm at now. I'm thankful for a constant reminder of just how bad it can get, and just how powerful God is to do for me what I couldn't do for myself.
I am glad I saw this video because I have wondered about this song. To me the darkness inside is real and is always there unfortunately. A happy dad and husband on most days, I love God and love Jesus Christ, but sometimes the darkness of depression does not let go and grabs a hold of me without warning. I have listened to this song many times and I can only think about how it is represented in my lifes walk and struggle.
My favorite Disturbed song. It gives me goosebumps and sometimes even a few tears try to come out. To me, it’s totally a spiritual song and I think about the light of Christ.
I know this reaction video is a couple of years old now, but I feel that it's important to try to explain something. David's girlfriend killed herself several years ago (look up Inside the Fire-Disturbed). He stated that it was a conversation with Satan telling him to kill himself as well. He worked through it (look up "Reason to Fight-Disturbed), even telling you not to let it steal your soul. Then this one is written. The past several years of his life, translated into music, is very personal, true, scary, and beautiful. These few songs, to me, show how you can go from considering suicide to finding the light by just keeping hope inside.
In times of desperation, or times of "darkness", your pride is broken or your "guard", and youre able to see the light. As well, look into Davids relationship with his father, a vicious religious zealot. His hope in his faith was crushed by his fathers example..dont let hope become a memory.. All of these words are so cryptic, and to assume direct meaning...you lose the power of the message..it is possible to overcome... The inner dark, is righteous anger, and we are encouraged to let it ignite the fire within you..the fight to overcome...SO POWERFUL
This song, to me, is about believing in yourself even when you are going through difficult or dark times. Its stating to always be hopeful. Hope is a good thing and no good thing ever truly dies.
This song has helped me in ways that words will never be able to express. Nearly 2 years ago my brother passed away while I was pregnant with my son. I listened to this particular album of Disturbed's alot during the week between his passing and his farewell while I was travelling to help my parents with the arrangements and this particular song always stood out and gave me hope and strength that I was struggling to find. Later on in my pregnancy, my son, Gabriel, would start kicking furiously whenever I would play this song and he still settles down whenever it is on. He was very literally my light during the darkest time of my life. A couple of months ago I got a tattoo for my brother (my parents both got the same one) and within it we have the lyrics "Sometimes darkness can show you the light"; we all have a sense of peace now just being able to look at our arms and see these words. Disturbed's new album has a song that has become my go-to song for days when I really struggle. I highly recommend having a listen to Reason To Fight.
It's about going through a tough time and you think that you won't be able to overcome it, but having something good come out of it; "darkness showing you the light."
This song is about hope and that sometimes the darkest times can result in the most amazing positive. The actual video for this song has a severely injured firefighter find love with the physical therapist who helped him rehab his injuries that were sustained in the line of duty.
I can relate to this song... I like that there are pastors willing to explain this kind of music. Instead of the usual of someone scrutinizing and talking crap about it just because it’s metal saying it’s devil music.
As a Disturbed fan, I'm really glad you appreciate this song; and I'm glad you got to hear it! Hey, it would mean a lot to me if you did a reaction to Rehab - It Don't Matter. Rehab is kind of a spiritual band to a lot of it's liseners as most of us have in or in and out of rehab and or AA and/or NA. One foot in front of the other and all that. Cheers.
A lot of times these people who don't listen to metal often dont realize that they speak to us the ones who have questions , the ones who are in those dark places looking for the light to save us, we find comfort in these songs not just for the sound but for the thought of we aren't alone anymore and that someone understands
Hey first time seeing a video of yours and I’d like to share my experience with you. So for years I have suffered with depression, anxiety, mental health problems and I’m still trying to get diagnosed at the age of 20 with whatever is going on with me. (Possibly aspergers) but because of all the harassment, bullying, myself attempting suicide , people trying to kill me or threatening to kill my family and a whole lot more. I went counselling many times and all but my last session worked because of something they tried. They put me in a state of trance and helped me to overcome one huge thing in my life which stopped me from cutting myself. Aside from the last paragraph I still suffered with depression and anxiety and PTSD (not confirmed by doctor). I ended up listening to disturbed and many other bands which may be considered heavy metal. The bands them self may sound heavy but you listen to the words and you find a connection with people.
The song discussing an unforgivable tragedy... Like a Child dying, or in the video, a firefighter who was severely injured on the job. It shows the recovery process and coming to love yourself and believe in yourself again. It is very different from what you might think. It is not meant to be read into very deeply, its a very deep song that discussing depression and recovery, but the meaning behind it is fairly clear.
omgosh…...uuumm….im crying and feel so bad for judging. so sorry Jesus! I ask forgiveness from this band regarding ur songs! this is beautiful! ty for opening my ears
I don't know if you are a WH40K fan, but I assume you are familiar with the role of a chaplain on a military unit? I recommend you watch Hellsreach. Its a 13 episodes miniseries, free in youtube, made by fans of the WH40K universe. In a universe full of monsters thirsty for humanity's blood, the Dark Templars are a brotherhood of genetically modified super soldiers, with a training that can go anywhere from 50 to 200 years long, and who literally live until they are killed defending humanity, being able to live for 700+ years. I think commander Dante is the oldest living one? He's 700 yo IIRC
Grew up with a very religious family. Disturbed has been a favorite of mine for over a decade and my family hates my musical choices. I am a huge metal fan and my families reactions range from devil worship to the "its not real music". It's nice to see a pastor not just completely rip apart the music without listening and thinking about it.
This song he wrote about those going through suicidal thoughts, or actions, he is sharing that even in the darkness we are not alone. He was saying that the darkness inside is the devil and sin and we need to learn that God if we just listen to him can help us! If you watch the video he talks about suicide not being the answer that God is out there, and not to lose any hope because it will help strengthen us in the hard times with God right next to us.. then towards the end of the music video he give out a suicide hotline and says some other things. If you want to also know the song Wrong Side of Heaven, if you watch the video also you will see he is talking about war and people with mental issues due to war...
I love channels like this. In fact, I love it when people do things like this in general, stepping out of their comfort zone of music. I really wish more people gave different genres of music a try a lot more often and stopped labelling other based on what they listen to. Just cuz u listen to metal or anything of the sort, doesn't make u a devil worshiper who loves "screaming and noise" for music. It's the same the other way around. Just because u listen to Christian music, doesn't mean you're a saint or even a follower of that religion. Maybe in a just universe these things could happen; however, sadly, we're not living in one of those nor will we ever. Sad but true.
There are tons of secular music like this. I'm so happy that yall didn't bash it just because it's secular. I'm from the south and just used to older church goers calling it noise lol.
To the others that commented, just a heads up... This song's music video notwithstanding, the beautiful thing about music, is that a song's interpretation is at the discretion of the listener. I even believe David Draiman himself would understand and appreciate that.
One of my favorite early metal bands David has a killer vocal God bless Disturbed so the question is. is the truth out there yes it is for those who believe Jesus said: Iam the way the truth and the life no one comes to the father but through me. B Bless brother's
It's funny that you would mention it could be a really great worship song. I think about three years ago, this song saved my life and helped me find religion. ....The catch is that it's a belief I'm not sure a lot of people here are going to get a kick out of.
Jack Rojas I am not a religious person, but a very spiritual one. I feel that everyone should be able to believe in whatever they choose. I can guess why you think no one here will get a kick out of what religion you found, but here's my thought. If it helps you get through the tough times, helps you feel better, and helps you become a better person, a person you are comfortable being, do it. If it makes you happy, that's all any of us should want for anyone else in this world. I saw Disturbed play this song live and I can say that it is the closest I have ever felt to being connected to a higher being or a part of the universe. I cried like a baby because it was so pure and beautiful. I completely understand how it led you to find something for yourself. High five from Louisiana!
Jack Rojas David Draiman is very spiritual. He just hates religion because its man made doctrine. He made you just like you are & He does not make mistakes.
Was on a legendary Concert in Hamburg with Chevelle , disturbed and avengend sevenfold . It was totally amazing 🤘 then they played the song everyone had to turn the light of the Smartphone on . So epic🔥
Pastor Andy, you make a good point. And I don't know why I didn't make this connection sooner. The line 'sometimes darkness can show you the light' powerful words. There is a song Disturbed released years ago titled "Darkness" may I suggest giving that a listen? My interpretation is, perhaps "The Light" is a pseudo-sequel to "Darkness" with the plot line being a person's journey, in life and in spirit. "Darkness" representing point A, and "The Light" representing point B. Btw, Disturbed is my favorite band👍🏻 Love these videos you guys make! God Bless 🙏🏻
Paid For The official channel yessss you didl I have to admit I'm not really religious but I love you guys makes me want to start keep up the great work
What it means is in tragic times our inner dark is powerful but instead of what most religion says casting it out, accept it and overcome it know it's there and push through to the light
I have to go to a church where the pastor opens his sermon with a Disturbed song! If you didn't know, the did a video where a close friend of his took their life. So he's quite proactive in helping others with depression. And they put on a great show (seen them twice). Keep up the great work and think about posting the services on here if you don't already. If you do please let me know.
I just came across this reaction, and I have to say that having read many of the comments, that there is another aspect of darkness that most seem to have missed...addiction. To me, this song fits in with the recovery process like a glove, especially when the process is Christian based. Perhaps that is the sermon you might think about.
The meaning of the song from my point of view is that whenever you are at your weakest point in life a light can be shown to bring you out of the darkness and show you that there is hope. As the song says sometimes Darkness will show you the light and sometimes people has to fall into the darkness into the weakest point in order for the path to be shown to the light
The way I interpret it as is, he talks about the shadow side (darkness). All those things that call your name through sin and temptation. And God (light). God is hidden in the darkness because when you’re in the darkness fighting sin, you must seek God to defeat the darkness. If you’re able to, meditate on God, close your eyes and focus on your breath while focusing on your love for God. Put your attention to your heart center and just breath and go deeper and deeper; talking to and seeking God until your mind and emotions become quite and still. Keep going until you can hear the audible voice of God. Then you will know what this song is about.
Would love to see you guys react to this song again, but the music video. It makes much more sense when you see that. It turns into a really uplifting message.
overall, The Light is a song that carries a message of hope and perseverance through the darkest times. the "inner dark" that rekindles the fire burning in you, perhaps that line refers to adversity that forces us to rise to the occasion and grow as people and children of God - in a similar vein to the famous Roman writer, Horace, once said: "adversity reveals the genius of a general;" where there is General, just substitute a person such as yourself, "[but] good fortune conceals it." Life is full of trials and tribulations, and it's God's way of giving us opportunities to grow and learn, to adapt, rather than remain static. Ecclesiastes 3:1 states "to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." the next seven verses list several dichotomies, such as a time to kill, and a time to heal, a time to break down, and a time to build up, etc but we can only build up if we "don't let hope become a memory..." and persevere through the time to tear down. the line, "let the shadow permeate your mind and reveal the thoughts that were tucked away." is a call to reflection and self-examination during these trying times; the book of Job is the story of a man caught in the middle of a debate between God and Satan, and as a result of this, Job goes through several tough times. it must have taken a great deal of soul searching and introspection to look for answers to his doubts about God, and in the end he came to the conclusion, "The Lord gives and he takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord." the official music video further reinforces these points by visually telling the story of a fire fighter who is wounded as a result of his occupation, and his long road to recovery as he goes through some pretty dark times before things start to get better (the turning point is where he is introduced to his physiotherapist, who he later starts a romantic relationship with), so the video shows examples of hope that things CAN get better, faith that things WILL get better, and love as "The Light" at the end of the dark tunnel, the resolution to the trials and tribulations, the ability to carry on, and the will to move on and continue to grow and learn in God, who, as stated in the second half of 1st John 4:8, "... God is Love." if you got this far reading my thoughts and ramblings about the message of "The Light" and how it fits into a Christian context, thanks for reading this, and congratulations, you have a longer attention span than the overwhelming majority of the internet. give yourself a pat on the back, mate. thanks for the read, Adam
Adam Wright yep. What I’ve taken from this song when I first heard it, the line “sometimes darkness, can show you the light”, to me they’re saying that sometimes the darkest times or lowest points of your life can show you how to better yourself and turn your life around. And actually David Draiman has said basically as much when discussing the song himself.
Adam Wright you nailed it. Every single part of it. The line "Sometimes darkness can show you the light" makes me think of looking for a way out and seeing a sliver of light. You would have never noticed it if you weren't in a dark place.
And that's why I love the song it really does work for me. Despite the band's dark tone they really do have some great inspirational songs that relate to various feelings
As others have said, I strongly suggest you watch the official music video, not the official lyrics video. I have probably listened to this song by them more than any other. With that said, as I watched the official music video & sang along in my head, I was literally holding back tears. Partially from what the video was depicting plus the lyrics as the video plays out. If you want another Disturbed song to look at, I suggest "Darkness" from their album Believe. A fan did a video skit to that song & again, it made me emotional, but it had me looking at a song I'd listened to many many times in a completely different light. Excellent reaction & discussion.
The song itself & its meaning isn't coming from a religious view, but rather a spiritual & philosophical view. Throughout life, we go through so many things, some good, some bad, & some that are so horrible, we feel like the shadows & our sorrows & pain are just consuming us. We become heartbroken, hopeless, depressed, anxious, our mind scatters & our heart weeps as our world seems to crumble around us. Yet, once those shadows wash over is & we're left laying at the bottom, we find the answers we've been looking for & pull ourselves up. Strength is found through pain. In short, the song is teaching "don't be afraid of the pain & don't fight it, you'll make it through." Sometimes darkness can show you the light
I appreciate that you're very open minded about these songs and even go so far to say that you would use these songs to introduce a sermon. Rock music gets a bad rap even when it often has a positive/powerful message behind it but allot of christians can't get past the screams and guitar riffs to listen to the lyrics lol 👍
I can't believe your channel has gained 500+ subscribers in less than 2 weeks. Congrats on the 1k subs and hopefully soon enough that number increases exponentially! You guys have verry good content and I hope to see many videos in the future. I would like to see you react to the song wrong side of heaven - five finger death punch, and possibly even the video.
But as someone whose delt with depression long enough... this song really is one of them that reminds you to not give up.... but also asks you to look at your darkest times and pull some kind of light out of it... theres never a reason to quit... but a million reasons to fight on...
I get that you wanted to see the lyrics, but the actual video shows what the song is talking about. It shows a fireman who gets badly burned in an accident. He is in the hospital, he’s depressed at how he looks now, but in that darkness, he meets a girl. His therapist. She sees him beyond what he looks like now and they fall in love. In that darkness of the aftermath of his accident, he finds the light in her.
The lowest point of a person’s life is the darkness and it is used as fuel to bring light into that person’s life of what that person was feeling before the darkness came
I am a 75 year old Grandmother, Born again Christian, Speaking in tongues and diversity of tongues, and I use mostly secular music for my intersession, because it is the spiritual call of the unsaved in most cases, speaking out what it is they need, God once told me that all music is meant to worship him, sometimes the people writing it just dont't know that. Music is a great weapon against the enemy and I often use his own music against him. Don't know if you guys will actually read this, but if you do and understand what I am saying I would appreciate you letting me know. God bless.
My prayer for you right now is that God would further open your spiritual eyes and ears to hear and see, the messages of the lost in these songs, to open your hearts in a way to say the things He needs you to say on your great program, only wish I had found you sooner.
"Sometimes darkness can show you light" David is saying sometimes in a tragedy there is a spec of hope and just maybe the outcome will be a blessing in the end
The lead singer survived a girlfriend committing suicide (as in he discovered her) when he was younger. He sings about it in “Inside the Fire”. I see this song as a “you won’t see the light until you face your fears” thing. That’s why in the second verse when he talks about letting the shadow permeate your mind and reveal the thoughts that we’re tucked away, it’s like how regression therapy works. As Christians we’re called to lay down our burdens and sins at the altar, and that’s something you can’t do without acknowledging them. Great review, guys.
David Draiman is a well-noted supporter of Isreal. His maternal grandparents are both survivors of the Holocaust and his grandmother lives in Isreal. His parents are observant and religious Jews, thus his religion is Judaism. Though he did not follow the religious path, he is totally proud of his Jewish heritage.
This song was meant inspire hope for everyone. Without darkness, we cannot see the direction of the light. Darkness is the absense of light, the natural state of human beings for we are fallen creatures borne of sin and wickedness. We need to remember that we are fallen and remember our inner darkness, acknowledge it and take control and responsibility of our own natures to find the light.
***** The Warning ***** ~ Hello Darkness my Old Friend by Disturbed "And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon gods they made." ~ Paul Simon "And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
What i think is clever about Disturbeds song writing. Is that while the song may not be directed towards religious ideals. I think it was written intentionally written to be interpreted by many different backgrounds. Alot of disturbed songs can easily be loved my Christians because they can interpret in a religious sense. In this song you fall to darkness. And find the light in god. Or as the songs music video shows. It can be other things as well.
When one is absent of fear, then they need not hope. Hope only exists because of a fear of not becoming, attaining, or achieving. Hope is useful only to those that fear. Faith is what overcomes fear. Once one no longer questions their own faith, they will no longer have fear. They know. In knowing they understand, they know nothing.
