Depends on the church. We tend to overgeneralize. I can tell ya that one of my jobs as a Deacon at my Church in Metro ATL is to pay folks bills, rent and mortgage when they get behind. Non members and members alike. Thousands of dollars every week from folks hard earned tithes (its almost unpaid part time job contacting folks and doing paperwork) Now- if you go to a church in the prosperity ministry community: your focus of "blessings" tends to be elsewhere.

It's a side note and something I wish I had more information on... From a Text Setting history I was told, "Jesus" was changed from "Iesus" (with an i!) due in part to "J" being a more numerous text character vs capital "i"! Which then the spelling became more popularized and repeated. Making it a unique hold over in time when technology could not keep up with religion!

Before the printing press, the Bible was written in Latin and religious leaders took advantage of the fact that an average member could not read it. We have a really big church im our town very fancy for South African standards...they have a private school on same grounds and the church and school is named the same but now they are moving the school to expand the church which is a $100 million project. To be a member of this church you need to a monthly fee which already in itself is ridiculous high. I wonder where that 100 mil came from, definitely not the school. I have refused to go to it in pure fact I know they ain't preaching because God is in their hearts but rather to fill their pockets with unbelievable amounts of money....this is not only a American thing.

It's interesting to look at the history of how pastors in the United States have changed their trends of economic system preferences. Early in the 29th Century, it was actually very common for priests, pastors, etc to be socialist or socialist-leaning. This was something that a lot of very, very wealthy men didn't like because it would influence so many people. So there was an extended propaganda campaign to influence churches in the US to become more right-leaning. Sadly, it worked very well, and now we have things like prosperity gospel, which is more about worship of the dollar than anything else.

The thing is most of them, have gotten their wealth not from the congregation but from the books, conventions, movie deals etc..They have separate income from the monies they collect for mission work. If you do belong to a church just know it takes money to even maintain the building. Where you pay hundred dollar on say your utility bill, a church may closer to thousand depending on size. The choices of the individual will dictate whether communication is continued or ceased. 1) If a person studied the Bible, CHOSE to dedicate their lives to God and was publicly baptized, then simply becomes inactive, - that person is spoken to. 2) If a person CHOSE to dedicate their life to God, STOPPED living in harmony with God’s standards, REFUSED to return to living in harmony with the standards they themselves agreed to with public baptism, - then that person is disfellowshipped from the congregation & communication is ceased. 3) If someone grew up in the congregation but NEVER committed themselves to living in harmony with Bible standards, that person can be communicated with. Final Thoughts: Many ex JWs chose that they no longer wanted to live in harmony with Biblical standards. Jehovah doesn’t force anyone to love him, worship him, etc. Like marriage, if someone doesn’t want to live in harmony with Biblical standards, DON’T get baptized. If someone doesn’t want to be faithful to one person, DON’T get married. The disfellowshiped person CAN be reunited with the congregation if that person returns to living in harmony with Bible standards, Jehovah is a very forgiving and welcoming Heavenly Father.

He definitely played that up to get the laughs. I must say though (giving grace to Josh's possible situation), having worked in the past with the homeless in my community, it is sometimes hard to maintain a hold on your composure and a resolute, respectful mindset when caring for those that are severely mentally unsound or covered in urine/fecal matter. Sometimes, those things can throw you more than someone who's cursing you out or just being hateful while getting your help. All that to say, I agree with you in the fact that Jesus didn't make a fuss over such things. His focus was and is on actively loving people. Not how they smell. 😂 I would love to know what things your fam would disagree with him on. I genuinely am interested and curious. 🤗 As for myself, here's how I try to come at such things/people like the ones he mentioned (please bear with me, I know I'm being loquacious😅): "Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, 'Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.' So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise." (Ephesians 5:10-15) "Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life. Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." (Psalm 119:104-105) "And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people. But everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord. This makes me very happy. I want you to be wise in doing right and to stay innocent of any wrong. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you." (Romans 16:17-20) I wish so many people were not thrown or confused by so many so-called "Christian" public figures. For such people, I always like to hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. "This is what the Lord says: 'Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land. 'But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green and they never stop producing fruit. 'The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.'” (Jeremiah 17:5-10) I believe that when true followers of Jesus find themselves in any doubt, uncertainty, confusion, chaos - we should pray and ask God to give us the mercy, wisdom, clarity, and peace we need for making important and vital decisions. And, to follow that up by testing everything with Jesus' help while being strengthened through His Holy Spirit, made able to see things the way He does. Again, I really appreciate you mentioning where you're coming from. Before tonight, I wouldn't have known what WELS meant. Thankfully, I do now. I know from experience that a great many churches get fixated on certain translations of the Bible (to be fair, the translation you use is important). My mom personally LOVES her NIV (which, I now know is a WELS fav). However, she has the pre-2010 version. Unfortunately, I cannot vouch for what the publishers have done with following translations. Things are missing, and not at all as they should be. As for me, I like to use the ESV, NLT, and NIVUK more than the NIV. I only say all that to say this: The New Testament was originally written in Greek. Today, we have over 5,700 Greek full manuscripts as well as pieces of manuscripts of the NT. We have approximately 10,000 manuscripts of the NT in the Latin Vulgate, and we have approximately 5,000 manuscripts in Ethiopic, Coptic, Armenian, Slavonic, Georgian, and Gothic. That means we've got about 20,000 handwritten manuscripts, existing before the printing press (when it was mass produced from the 2nd century through the 10th Century). There is no document that even approaches the New Testament in manuscript evidence. The Greek manuscripts of the entire New Testament are over 400 pages long = we have over 2.5 million original pages of the New Testament. We also have about a million quotes of the New Testament from ancient church fathers, like Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, Clement, Bishop of Rome, Papias, Polycarp, and others. When I recently happened upon the above information, the history lover in me was blown away. Those calculations aren't even including the personal accounts of all the secular sources during Jesus', the Disciples', and the Apostles' lifetimes that back up the who-what-when-where(s) in the scriptures. And, it's just the New Testament. I'm sure the Old Testament documents would blow me away as well. *chucklechuckle* I know that all of us are "built" differently, so, we find that different things encourage and uplift us. Personally, I find my heart grows a few sizes (lol) when historical facts, science, etc. hold hands with the Bible. 🥰 I don't vibe with religiosity, or religious people. God help me, I struggle with being repulsed by them, and wrestle with loving them. I stand by having and maintaining a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, daily reading His Word, and when possible, enjoying fellowship and community with others that believe the same. I am not sure how you are feeling about God these days, but on behalf of every individual that has ever misrepresented the person of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and God, Our Creator to you, I want to apologize. I'm so very sorry you've had to suffer through all the sinful BS, white lies, and full-blown dishonesty; the half-hearted, watered down, lazy, ignorant, and false teachings; the disgusting, arrogant legalism and the rampant, blatant hypocrisy; the disillusionment and pathetic apathy of poor leadership; the inescapable, dominating absence of any character-building and living of a life filled with joyful gratitude-in-action; the insatiable, lustful passion for selfish desires fulfilled that guts and leaves an utter void of true thanksgiving and worship to God, who deserves awe and honor; the obscene and demonic lack of true faith, hope, humility, self-control, love, kindness, caring, compassion, understanding, grace, and mercy. I apologize to you for ALL OF IT. You deserve an apology. We all do. In our human frailty, we've let each other down, and we've let the standard Jesus sets down. I hope and pray that Jesus does for you what He did and continues to do for me: He's helped me forgive and continue to forgive 13 years of trauma that all of the aforementioned gave me. His faithfulness really is great, and His mercies really are new, every morning. He hasn't left me or forsaken me. He's healed me and saved me from so much, and He continues to give me strength, encouragement, and peaceful shelter in my soul from the insanity, depravity, and total devastation of this world. I pray He gives you the same in abundance, tons of blessings, as well as fully answering your deepest questions, the ones only you and He know. I completely understand if you don't respond to any of this. I know it generally isn't the norm for a stranger to react on here the way I have done. No worries, my guy. I've been there.
