Pasture Raised - Gotta Have The GRASS To Do It!
To raise animals on pasture, you have to have quality grass. We are working on clipping our field today to make sure we keep our grass and forages in good shape.
And yes, we do watch Pete at “Just A Few Acres Farm”

Cattle and sheep are solar powered mowers. Sheep and goats are solar powered weed whackers.

Chuck--on the topic of grass. What kind or type of grass is best for suited for pasteurized poultry in your opinion? What do you look for in grass that is most beneficial for the chicken forage? How high should it be cut or frequency? I'm considering a poultry enterprise for my future property and management thereof. I'm not running cows over it--as its just 5 acres. So. Chickens and Turkeys only. Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks Chuck. Farm looks great. With all the different breeds, how do you know when your layers age out?

It sure must be tough to need to be mowing when you prefer to have enough cows to eat it. Hopefully, the prices will come down a bit to make it possible to add a few more to the herd. May God bless you.

My neighbors mow their cattle pasture. They have the nicest pasture in town IMO. It really keeps the weeds down and it is lush and vibrant. I have other neighbors who don't mow and I can't figure out what their animals eat there are so many weeds.

Perhaps weeds and or grain?

So this field has some yellow crownbeard in it. I was hoping to knock it down early too. My other pastors have it but are a bit steep to mow. May work on them as the cows move off.

@@user-kv2pt4lu9y Well that is the thing...the longer they don't mow the more weeds their are until it is just a field of weeds. The animals don't appear to eat the weeds at all...and they are in very poor condition. I would be surprised if they could afford to feed them all grain...it would be so much cheaper to just perform proper field management and mow...so IDK The guy who does proper field management maybe mows 2-3 times per year but it keeps the weeds from going to seed and taking over.

@@SheratonParkFarms If you could get a batwing mower it might give you more stability. I was looking at some farm property and it was STEEP. But the man who owned it had a batwing mower and he scooted right up slopes that I couldn't at that time imagine mowing. Mad skills tbh.

We bought 6.5 ac of abandoned hay field in 2016 and I mowed about 3 of that once a year since then. Its amazing how quick the grass recovers and takes over after mowing. The weeds are knocked down and the grass is looking great again and we'll take some loose hay for mulch and fodder next month before our first ever batch of broilers hit the pasture. I'll start clearing another 1+ac corner this year and beat the woods back some more. And hey, seat time is good time.

I think it helps to mow , I think the better grasses come up and help with weed control alittle , just my thoughts.

Nothing wrong with keeping a well kept farm, homestead agriculture production facility. Some individuals should take more pride in themselves, little bit of house cleaning goes along way with your customers and the public.

No shame in mowing that field, putting some carbon and seed on the ground. Better than wasting it since the cows won't eat it.

No kidding! 40 days and 40 nights here too. Should be a great spring hay crop if it will stay dry long enough to get it cut and in the barn.
