This week, Morgan sits down with Paul Greive, a former marine-turned-farmer and the founder of Pasturebird. Pasturebird uses regenerative farming to build a pasture-raised poultry farm. Greive talks about his past life in the military and a battle with Lyme disease that resulted in him adopting the paleo lifestyle and becoming a farmer.

Greive took a deep dive into learning about regenerative farming, learning about responsible animal agriculture and its lasting effects on soil, and developed his system to raise true, pasture-raised hens on grass living off fresh grass with access to the sun. He learned the staggering difference in nutrient density for regenerative farming compared to conventional.
Greive discusses his humble beginnings as a start-up farm struggling with distribution, and how Primal Kitchen founder Mark Sisson gave his brand the boost it needed in his early days. Listen in as he spills on his favorite PK product (Buffalo!) and the future of farming.

Is he still running the farm the same way now that Perdue has bought the company?

Soo cool👌🏼 this is a new area for me since a couple of years and it’s so nice to watch how the “regenerative farming” is growing around the globe 🌏 I live in Sweden and here it’s popping up regenerative initiatives all over. This podcast was great and last week I listened to a guy called Richard Perkins who’s I guess is one of the front figures in this area - keep up the great work 🙏🏻👍🏻♥️

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't like this on multiple levels - let me explain. Let me say first though that I'm happy for Paul, that's a great success story. 1)Part of regenerative/ nutrient dense agriculture as a holistic approach is that it's local. Meaning locally grown chicken feed, locally sourced materials, and local sales so that you cut down on the long distance trucking in and out, the heavy footprint processing center with enormous amounts of waste and water treatment issues, and the necessity to have workers 24-7 in a closed in factory environment. 2) Massive crowds of chickens can't be raised in that high a density without the administration of vaccines at the hatchery, and medication and antibiotics in the field. Not feasibly. And it's those very close quarter environs - even if it is moving and semi open air - that propagate a lot of poultry diseases. 3)Creating a system that outwardly looks just like a true wholesome system in the eyes of many consumers is disingenuous. What I mean is that if you ask the average consumer to describe organic they will tell you about clear running streams through green fields of grass with butterflies flying around the crops that are fertilized with manure from a cow who's never seen concrete. That's not the feed that these chickens are getting even though it's "organic". All that we've done is take conventional agriculture, tweak the rules on "organic" a little, and moved thousands of chickens from a stationary crammed facility to a mobile crammed facility. Is it better? Yes. Is it that much different? Not much. 4) By establishing a mass production system to mimic the locally produced, true blue, real organic pastured birds it's essentially going to bring down market prices to a level that won't support a small local farmer. I belive prices should be more competitive but that's not what we're talking here. By removing the chance for enough small farmers to fill in the supply gap the entire nation is weakened in several ways: Local food supply is destabilized or removed; Currency moves on an interstate level vs a local level; A large factory closing effects hundreds or thousands of jobs locally and abroad vs one or two farmers having to shift production locally to adjust to market demand; Vast amounts of land and capital are held in bloated corporate farms vs being distributed among the rural population. 5) Consumers are once again left with fewer choices. Because the local farmers couldn't compete, they aren't there anymore. Now that there's no competition the large farm is at leisure to slacken up on their quality and pull the normal re-wording of things without the customers consent. All these things and a lot more are serious concerns when you back up and look at this from a bird's view (pun intended). There's a chance that the whole industry could turn around and make regenerative, healthy, nutrient dense, meats available at wonderful prices - but I'll let you decide what those odds are!

Wonder if he got antibiotics. A two-week protocol should have sorted his lyme out if implemented soon after getting infected.
