It's time to put piglets on pasture! In this video, I show you how our pig fences and moveable shelters are constructed, and how we train the pigs to the electric fence.

Thanks for sharing your process. We have a pig chasing story but didn’t lose them quite as long as y’all. We just had to chase them across the field and my wife body slammed one WWE style. I do use a training pen to get them used to the electric. Enjoy watching y’all. Chuck from Sheraton Park Farms

Thanks Chuck! Seems like everyone who raises pigs has a chasing story and a "getting them on the trailer" story!

Thanks for sharing your story - wish I’d seen this video before we brought the two piglets home yesterday. Put them in the electric fenced pen inside a welded wire fence, and within about 3 minutes, they’d each blasted through the electric fence and under the welded wire fence and taken off across the hay field and into the woods. Long gone. Neighbors sighted them this morning, and this evening, a flock of wild turkeys apparently scared them home. Fences have been reinforced, so hopefully they’re home for the duration now.

We used premier net fence like you let them out after awhile of getting used to the stall they seemed pretty excited to be able to go play in the dirt till one hit that fence they all ran full steam back into the barn and stared back at the opening didn't think they would ever come out we had 2 layers of fence and 1 still got out looked out the window and he was playing with the goat and angus bull like they where old buddies

@@JustaFewAcresFarm Now, just around a year later, you are closing in on a quarter million. You deserve it, though. You're so much better than many other farm / homestead channels I have seen, including mine for sure. I keep thinking, "I wanna be more like Pete."

You can tell you’re from the north. When you were on a knee talking and flipped that feed pan over. I was like. Watch out for the snake man. It’s a 50/50 chance that a snake is under something you flip over at my house.

I’d love to hear people’s experiences with this kind of set up. My hubby wants to use this type of open system but with the coyote packs running through the property I have some serious reservations. Any input??

Hi Pete! Thank you for sharing! I watch all of your videos now and am slowly going through all of the ones I missed before finding your channel. We are in south west Ohio and have a small and I do mean small! Lol homestead. We are trying to buy a bigger property and want to get into cattle. That’s how I found you when trying to learn about Dexters. I was sold on them until recently learning about lowline angus? I like that they are polled and have a higher yield than Dexter but are still smaller? What are your thoughts on the lowline compared to the Dexter? Thanks again for the entertaining and educational videos!!!
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 4 года назад
Hi Jeff, I'm glad you found our channel! I don't know much about lowline Angus. We steered away from Angus when we started out because I felt the marketplace was saturated with Angus beef, and we were looking for a unique breed to give us a leg-up marketing our products. Angus do have the reputation for not being a brightest cattle, but I haven't raised them personally. In terms of flavor, I'd put Dexter beef up against any breed, but I'm not biased ;)

Thanks! I appreciate your thoughts!! So I watched the video where you talked about markets and butchering your own meat birds the night before market. You should do a video on your butchering process. We just butchered our Cornish cross birds about a week ago and it took us a few hours just to do eight with a plucker! Lol. I know we will get faster the more we do it but I still like to see how other people are doing theirs. We have another 30 freedom rangers growing now. Thanks again!!!

Hi Mike, it's only about a quarter acre. It'll look like the surface of the moon by the time they reach butcher weight!
@rtom675

I imagine those pigs just completely tear that pasture up after 5 months. Do you do anything particular to help the pasture recover afterwards (or does the rest just do it)? Enjoyed the video as always!
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 4 года назад
Hi rtom675, the pasture heals itself. The pigs' rooting turns up the seed bank in the soil, and the next spring we have long-dormant seeds sprouting.

I'm having an issue with the piglets drinking from the nipple drinker. Any tips as to getting them drinking? Thanks and keep up the great videos.
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 4 года назад
Hi Mark, I've never had this problem. Normally they're curious and figure it out themselves. Maybe put something sweet on it, like honey? Or put a dish of water below the nipples so they associate that area with water.

i'm new to raising my pigs on a pasture. 5 pigs on 1 acre that doubles as a live oak orchard. Basically all the acorns and sour corn they can eat, yet they gain weight so slow, is this normal?
