Poultry are such a great fit with market garden farming. Even with rising grain costs, our poultry essentially cover the cost of their feed, which means we get volumes of manure for free. This serves as the basis for our market garden farming

I hear what you say about grain costs! I'm trying growing alfalfa/lucern as an alternative on a patch of rundown land. Not a great success the weeds have taken over before the slow germinating alfalfa got a hold. I've also sown a patch of lupin for seed. I'm using the alfalfa and to a lesser extent to fix the soil as its prone to erosion. Most of the locals grow their own corn and cabbage trees for feed. Sadly we have only the two hens as we had a infestation of red mite brought in by wild birds so we are waiting for the lifecycle of these pests to expire before restocking, and hopefully by then the alfalfa will be a part of their diet!

Sad to know people who became reliant on your foods are left in a lurch. Thinking a bunch of those kids are old enough to learn how to tend a "store" as a learning experience and lessen the draw for the deer. Every other year produce was harvested so fast they probably didn't even know it was there. Sort of glad you still document the massive changes the farm had had to endure as your life changed. Makes me not feel like a failure as my life had to change for illness.

Hi Richards, for your deer problem it is good to use a electrical fence on different height and "deepness" considering that deer can't see very well a 3 dimension fence and won't jump it if it can't guess the distance they have to jump. We have intense deer pressure here in Québec and we even educate them by ading a bait (peanut butter) on the hot wire so they learn it is not good to hang around. Good luck with that.

I’ve been “fighting” deers with different kinds of fences, but when the deers know it is goodies inside the growing aerial, only physical obstacle stopping them.Metal rod mesh , 230 cm high, does the trick here on Värmlandsnes,Sweden!

Thank you for another beautiful video, it is so beautiful on your farm, everything green and soothing. A wonderful view from the house over the farm and also the other house overlooking the lake. Nice to see that there are several people working on the farm, that is much more fun. I find working on the farm/homestead a bit lonely if you can do it with several people, it's more beautiful. Good luck with the painting.

I'm thinking the deer issue is because there isn't as much activity as your normal Market Garden, with many not as many people moving about?

On the bright side, seeing deer returning is a happy indication of the ecosystem health you have brought back! It seems all that work regenerating your woodlands is paying off in the rise of biodiversity. Those deer would surely prefer these habitats than Swedens monocultural spruce surely

Also, how about planting some food out for the deer? Just sow about the opening in the forest areas? Just a thought.

Thanks for your wonderful videos. I am just a home gardener, but still learn a lot from you. So far this year my problem is chipmunks! They nibble and dig. But that's better than deer (which I do see around, but they haven't come up to the house yet).
