The thing to remember about alcohol is that not all alcohols are created equally and not all are drying. I’ve talked about the “bad” alcohols versus “good” on my channel. This type of alcohol is not only (usually) added to help dry down, but more specifically, it’s used to bind the products to the skin. That’s likely what you’re feeling is the binding, not so much the drying. There are many skin care products that contain alcohol, as well, for this exact reason - alcohol pulls the ingredients deeper into the skin. Again, I just want to stress that simply because a product contains alcohol is not necessarily a bad thing - it completely depends on the type of alcohol (some are very damaging) and I’ve talked about which are damaging on my channel, specifically in the YSL All Hours video.. I have extremely dry, mature skin, FYI. Much love, Shelbie =)❤️
Ashley Gable Yes, Denatured Alcohol is BAD for your skin. Very damaging. And this one has just plain Alcohol, which is frequently used not only for drying time, but in my experience, most often it is used as a binder; to hold the ingredients together and help bind them to your skin. That is why you will frequently see Alcohol in skin care - it works to pull the ingredients into the deeper layers of this skin. Because this foundation has several forms of silicones in it that have a small molecular size, it would be my guess that’s why alcohol is in this formula and so high on the ingredients list - a binder. But, I’m not a cosmetic chemist...just a gal who loves makeup and has been using and researching it for years. But I always have much to learn. LOL! I do have several videos on my channel where I talk about Denatured Alcohol, as well as the different types of alcohol (including the YSL video I mentioned). If you’re interested, feel free to check them out! I haven’t been on my channel for a few months, as I had a family emergency, but will be returning next week...hopefully! I Hope that helps! Much love, Shelbie =)❤️💜
@@BeautyDaughtMomI'm really into ingredients and what not go use on my face too. I'll check your channel out 😊. I was just worried if it said just straight alcohol on a ingredient it meant denatured alcohol or a bad one. I know when it's a fatty alcohol in ingredients it always species which one it is.
Wow! You are so early! I’m so excited to see your review and thoughts. I also really appreciate your arm swatches on those light shades. Thank you, Michele!!
Michelle I was so upset and truly dissapointed it has alcohol. I agree any other foundation i would of NEVER boought it . Michelle this foundation is outstanding. Its so beautiful. I literally walked out of the store and i must of gotten at least 5 compliments. Im 53 so you could imagine. I have NO foundations with alcohol i have removed them from my collection ,But this is Pat Mc Grath , i will use it only for special occasions. Thank you so much for your honesty
Claudia Botero ditto. Fragrance free foundation recommendations always welcome. Also chemical sunscreen free! My rosacea flares within 60-90 seconds of accidentally using.
I can’t believe you smoked! Your skin is pristine! Thanks for reviewing this. I briefly considered it but knowing there’s alcohol in it turns me off. I don’t mind a product with alcohol for my nose and chin, but definitely not on the rest of my face. It’s too drying.
@@katek3512 From what I understand, it depends on the type of alcohol. Fatty alcohols are the ones you are referring to, used for stabilizing ingredients and improving texture. However, per the ingredient list on Sephora, that's not the type of alcohol this foundation has.
@@sweethartia "bad" alcohol , (not fatty alcohols) does tend to dry skin out. I'd stay away from it if you have dry skin. You can also ask for a sample at sephora to try it out for a week and see how your skin responds to this formula.
I have dry skin and purchased this foundation. It’s skin like and hydrating to the point I forgot I had it on. Get your correct shade and it looks like perfect skin 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I went crazy this morning and ordered everything 😭 shade 14 and 17, the primer and the light and medium powders. I can’t wait to see how they look on my skin. Your skin looks amazing with this foundation 😍
Dang, what a bummer but I SO appreciate your honesty. I didn’t buy this at launch today because I wanted to see what you said first, and I’m glad I did!
I have to say, the foundation by itself looked gorgeous on your skin. To me, this is a minimalist foundation that goes on effortlessly. I just purchased this for those days when I don’t need to do a whole workup. Also, certain alcohols are not bad on the skin, may be a good idea to learn more about the type in this makeup.
Looking forward to the full review of these products! I'm so glad you chose to do a first impression for this video. The alcohol would be a deal breaker for me. I'm not eczema prone, but I'm very dry.
I love it. I stan Pat's foundation and concealer line! Best range of shades AND undertones in foundations and concealers in the market - Pat even remembered to represent olive undertones for light skin dark skin which is almost unheard of
I ordered the primer and foundation today, I kinda wish I had watched this first. Im really excited for the Charlotte Tillbury one, more so than this one. That one seems like something I might wear everyday. Thanks for the quick mini review!❤
Stephanie Snider Hi! I have lupus too, but it doesn't affect my skin, thank goodness. And I'm combo/oily so I may try it. Just wanted to give you a shout tho. Hang in there sister!!! 💕
I so excited. Brilliant. I would like to see the difference between just the foundation and the entire system applied. That's why I love looking at your reviews, you don't complain, you are clear and honest about your reviews, and your reviews are intelligently done. Thanks again, Michele.
When you showed the ingredients my eye went straight to that alcohol!! So many women over 40 yrs old use RetinA and therefore have dry skin, so this foundation just isn't going to work. It sounds like she made a foundation exactly for the runway demographic. One day I plan to start a project comparing all foundation & mascara ingredients... I wonder how many are similar. YSL All Hours is still my HG, for whatever reason it looks & feels best on my skin. I recently tried the drugstore foundation by CYO and love it! It's the closest to my YSL but lighter... I also noticed Pat's shades seem very yellow & peach and I need a true cool-tone. Thanks for the quick video!!
As I commented on your IG post, this will be a pass for my because of the alcohol. It happened to me with a (very expensive) Chanel bb cream (I think it was les beiges) that was supossed to be hydrating, but I would feel my skin really dry and uncomfortable after some time when using it. Turns out alcohol was the third or fourth ingredient. So now I check all the ingredients very carefully before buying any foundation. Thanks for the video! you do an amazing job uploading so fast!
I love your honesty and descriptions!!! I have very dry skin as well, and will be curious to see your follow up using the whole system.....thank you for your thorough and honest reviews!!!!
So stunning on you! My favorite foundation for dry skin is actually tient miracle from Lancome it has alcohol but it stays dewy and fresh all day ! I’m super dry and it’s a holy grail for me ❤️❤️❤️
Awww man, I hate that the foundation is too drying. Hopefully, the primer and powder eliminate that feeling. Thank you so much for your help today, it was an absolute pleasure running into you.
I love how you got hold of this foundation so quickly to review. It looks great on but I agree with you if it starts drying out the face due to alcohol it won’t work for a lot of people. I look forward to your review with the full collection. Thank you for this initial review!
It really looks so pretty on you. I have dry mature skin so I’m afraid I may have to pass. Will look forward to your whole system breakdown. Thank you for doing a review so quickly...you’re the best!
Wow, you read my mind! I've got 2 shades in my cart on the PM site, having the hardest time deciding on a shade. The warm tip was really helpful. So bummed about the alcohol, I have dry skin too. I'm sorry it's not good for your skin, so disappointing! It looks lovely on you. Thank you, you're the best, Michele~
Thank you for the quick review. Sephora matched me with shade 7 but I tend to like neutral colors and was afraid 7 would be too yellow but ordered it anyway. Shade 6 looks very neutral. I actually think I may like this foundation because it looks similar to the YSL Fusion Ink Foundation which was discontinued in the US. Love your reviews Michele, and that monochrome leopard manicure is the bomb. 😍😍😍
I was wondering between you, Kelsee and Mel who would review this first 😂. You 'won' Michele (thanks for the review!). Alcohol is also a dealbreaker for me and I was looking forward to this one 😔
@MicheleWang~ I agree with you about the color Light 6 being a neutral color vs a cool tone. I thought the same thing about the colors in the light-medium range that were listed as a pink undertone.
The foundation looks very natural and flawless. I wonder how it feels by mid day. I usually stay away from anything has an alcohol ingredient with dry skin. Thank you for testing.
Michele, thanks for getting this up so quickly. Alcohol in foundations is very hit or miss for me. In the YSL all hours I couldn't tolerate it at all but I can wear Armani luminous silk without any issues. I'm really looking forward to seeing the video when you review the whole system. I'm also really curious about the brushes.
Will be interested to hear about your experience with the full system. I have super sensitive skin but it's mostly fragrance that drive me bananas. Look forward on hearing your thoughts.
I really love that packaging too! Also your nail details are really cool. I usually like fluid texture foundations but the alcohol is a turn off for me. I have dehydrated skin so I don't think this will be great for me.
Thanks for trying this out. I ordered the whole system ... fingers crossed that it works out since I also have dry, eczema prone skin. Looking forward to your updated review of the powder and primer.
Thanks Michele - great post. I too am concerned about the alcohol being so high in the ingredient list - and also find it interesting why she did not list the alcohol type - would be nice to know if it is a fatty alcohol (e.g. cetyl or stearyl alcohols which can be beneficial) or drying alcohols (denatured or isopropyl) - strange, and not fully responsible given the increasing focus on ingredients. I send a message to Pat McGrath Labs - will share the response as soon as I receive one - thanks again, Michele. 👍💕
From Pat McGrath Labs: “The alcohol in the Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Foundation is Ethyl Alcohol. Ethyl Alcohol is a food grade alcohol that helps to reduce the dry time of the foundation, as well as to extend the wear of the formula. The Ethyl Alcohol in the formula is not denatured; also the combination of Ethyl Alcohol mixed with emollients and humectants in the formula ensure the foundation does not cause skin dryness.” The alcohol is followed by glycerin - makes sense.
It's beautiful on you. You look like you just have perfect skin without any makeup. Exactly what I'm looking for. My skins a little oily so not bothered by the alcohol. THANKS FOR ANOTHER HONEST GREAT REVIEW!
Thank you for you're honesty. This is exactly why I enjoy watching you're videos & I always learn something new. If I want to really know about a product I look you up first.
I work for Pat McGrath at her London counter and I was curious about the alcohol ingredient. It’s actually ethyl alcohol which is a food grade alcohol and is not denatured. Meaning that it reduces the drying time of the foundation. The mixture of the emollients and the non denatured alcohol helps dry skin. In the past few days of the launch, I’ve applied it to probably well over 40 clients and it looks beautiful on dry skin!
I am so glad I watched your video! I almost just bought this on a whim because I got so excited. But I have rosacea and my skin is flung really well right now. Thank you so much for pointing out the ingredients and saving me the $ money and the heartache from finding out the hard way! You are awesome Michelle!
You’re amazing for doing this for us! Excited to see the whole system to see if the foundation sandwiched between the primer and powder will not feel so dry. THANK YOU!!❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for getting this up so quickly. This foundation will be a pass for me because I have a bit of rosacea which I manage to keep under control by using the right products for skin care and makeup. The alcohol would be too much. Also, I honestly didn’t like the way this foundation looked on you compared to others like your beloved La Mer. I appreciate you taking a hit for the team. And I’ll watch your next video. But there are better options out there. Great review. 💚
Good explanation regarding alcohol and what is supposed to do and why it doesn’t work on your type of skin. That was useful and explained well. Most bloggers don’t talk about how the makeup feels/ how comfortable it is. It does look good, however. Thanks
Girl, you are like lightning ...always!! I have to say, there is a small group of RU-vidrs I always look to for honest, thorough, complete reviews. So I was on pins and needles today....Auntie Pat...we all love her and everyone is SO excited for this launch that I was hoping it lived up to the hype. I have normal to dry sensitive skin with rosacea so alcohol also sadly takes this foundation out of my rotation. I’m so grateful to you for being consistently honest and transparent with your viewers and telling it “like it is” even if it is a fan favorite! You are a blessing, Michele! And you saved me quite a bit of cash as well!!! Thank you!! ❤️😘💜😉💙
The colour match is great. Thank you for picking it up at sephora and doing a first impression video. The finish is very natural. It is oil-free so undoubtedly better suited to normal to oily skin.
It works for me and did not feel drying through out the day. Lancome Teint Idole 24 HR did feel drying the longer I wore it, but it did keep my redness covered but at the price of the tightness. Kept spraying my dewy spray to stay hydrated. YSL all hours, Haus Labs, and Bobbi Brown showed my redness in 1 hour on chin and nose.
I just wanna say I bought a jo Malone candle today because of her other video and the Sisley essential skincare lotion as well. I’ve been using samples for a few weeks now and it’s one of the only things that does breakout my sensitive, dry, yet acne prone skin. I was on accutane for a year and a half and it really made my skin super sensitive and dry. Thanks for the recommendations!
Thank you, Michele, for continuing to do a wear test despite the alcohol! Would you maybe give us your thoughts of PM's new foundation compared to the Armani Fluid Silk foundation? Not a full comparison video but just any noteworthy differences? I'm particularly interested in the 'blurring' qualities of PM compared to Armani. Finally, CONGRATULATIONS, on quitting smoking! I, too, quit so I understand full well the process. WAY TO GO!
Thanks for the first impression! I think Abby Bliss White posted a comment yesterday about the alcohol. I chose to remain optimistic and bought the system this morning. Since I also have really dry skin, it was such a bummer to hear you say that you could feel that tightening sensation on your face from the foundation. It's a feeling I'm definitely familiar with! Ah, well, it looks so beautiful on your skin. I'm determined to make it work! I will be layering on all the dewy things!
Thank you so much for getting up a first impression so fast. Unfortunately this foundation is going to be a pass for me because the alcohol is just too high up in the ingredient list. I know I would not be able to use this on a regular basis. My skin would get really pissed off and create a giant volcano pimple. If alcohol was more toward the bottom my face could handle it. The foundation does look very pretty on you though. I look forward to hearing your thoughts when you use the entire system. Thank you!
Thank you Michele💕 for this fast and detailed review 😍 I almost check out this foundation with totally wrong shade online 😱and the textures is not my liking...you saved my day!!!🙏🏻
I had opened up YT to look for some first impressions and literally your video was the first that I saw before even going to the search bar! 😆😄 I actually don’t know how my skin reacts to products with alcohol too high up in the list, so I’ll make sure to start paying attention more. Thank you! Can’t wait to see the full day test.
You are my favourite. I probably won't buy very many things you recommend but I sure do like hearing your opinion. I trust you and that is hard to find on youtube these days. You have persuaded me to buy a few things I wouldn't have known about and your advise was always good.
Definitely try it with the primer if you have not! It prevents transepidermal water loss, so that helps a lot with the dry feeling you are experiencing.
Thank you. Great review. My foundation from The Ordinary is thin. A bit runny. It was not my preference but I ended up loving how thin it was. The Ordinary foundation also promises skin benefits.
Thank you for getting this first impression up so fast. I can't use alcohol laden products, even in make up as i have atopic skin and it is having enough trouble without adding this into the mix. Here to see how you like it/it wears and your views though. Have a great weekend xoxo
I watched the day you posted but didn't get 2 my computer till now. I was tempted, but now, not so much. Looking forward to seeing how the other products perform. Love the packaging. Thanks! Glad 2 see you get on this so quickly, wanted your review.
So happy you did this review. I ordered today the foundation and primer. So looking forward to ur full review. Yes the primer is really moisturising so I think u might be ok with the primer. That’s why I brought the primer because I love glow and I have dry skin too. xx
Thanks for your honest review, I was about to purchase this foundation until this video. I have combination skin and cannot use alcohol on my skin. I subscribed and turned on all notifications. I Stan an honest influencer.
I’ve also been told by makeup execs where I work that the alcohol in foundation is not like rubbing alcohol so it’s not drying...at least that’s what I’ve been told. Dre Dre does makeup has a really good video/tutorial that explains it too😊 hopefully it’ll make you feel better about the alcohol in it😍
I'm so glad you posted this so quickly! I was hovering over the website because i was really curious, but i'll definitely pass now that i know about it feeling drying. Thank you for your reviews, i appreciate that you're honest and detailed and give as much info as you can. Seeing the foundation up close was really useful too, as some other youtubers i've watched don't zoom in enough for me to see the textures of skin products (or it's filtered so it's unclear). Thanks again :) Have a good weekend
Your skin looks amazing! I appreciate your honesty regarding this new release by Pat M. I could sense ypur disappointed about the inclusion off alcohol. I doubt I'll try it as I also have dry skin.
I know what you mean about "feeling" products on your face and it makes me crazy too!! I just ordered the whole primer/foundation/powder system and I can't wait to play around with it.
Looking forward to the full set review. I want to love this because it’s PM but alcohol is a worry. I’ll wait for your full review before parting with AUD$115. Thanks Michele for the honest first impression. That’s why I love your channel.
I've never worn foundation before but just got a sample of the new PMG and was matched to Light 6 as well. I'm shocked by what a perfect match it is. I'm excited to see what other shades match you, and crossing my fingers they'll work for me too!
Thank you for this review! I love Pat McGrath so I was tempted by this foundation, but will now pass it. I have dry, sensitive skin prone to eczema as well. I stumbled onto you through kinkysweat and I'm so glad I have! I enjoy how articulate you are and the obvious passion and enjoyment you have for makeup :)
Thanks for your first impressions. Looked great on you but I also have a problem with the alcohol in the ingredients. I don’t always get a reaction but it’s expensive to buy and not be able to wear. Would like to see what you think of all the products when they come.
I was talking to someone I know that actually is a chemist that works making formulas specifically for cosmetics and she said the alcohol in a formula like foundation is actually used you pull it together and stabilize it. And that when it’s in a foundation formula the percentage is low enough that you’re not actually getting alcohol applied to the skin in a way that will irritate it or affect it negatively, so sensitive skin shouldn’t worry. Also, she noted that an ingredient list, and the order isn’t a hard and fast thing that should scare you. Just because it’s the fourth ingredient doesn’t mean that it has a super high concentration. It’s hard to explain, but the order of the ingredients on the list isn’t always based on concentration.
