Great reaction you guys, minus the scares, to this beautiful song which just happens to be the last track of the album. I mention this because the way Lex is with the first song of an album I am with the last song of an album. I was fortunate enough to see them twice on their tour for this album in 2002 and the icing on the cake was getting the autographs of Lyle Mays and Cuong Vu. The vocals on this album are by Richard Bona and Cuong Vu. Richard is also on fretless bass and Cuong Vu plays the trumpet. 🙏🏽✌🏽🌎🌍🌏♥️

Thank you for suggesting more of P.M.G. So much to choose from! Congrats on the autographs. I did get to briefly chat with Lyle, after a show at U.C. Irvine back in the 80's.

@@TW-sy6df You are so very welcome. About the autographs it’s actually a very interesting story about being in the right place at the right time. I went to see them at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium. I was with a date the show was scheduled to start at 8:00 pm we were way early it was like 6:00 pm so we are driving around looking for where to park and grab something to eat before the concert. When all of a sudden who do you think I spot walking down the sidewalk none other than Lyle Mays together with Cuong Vu who was making his debut with the group on this album as trumpet player and vocalist. Needless to say we could not believe our eyes we quickly parked the car on the side of the road jumped out with a cd cover jacket of Speaking Of Now and a pen and ran up to them. You could tell Lyle was used to such shenanigans Cuong not so much but they were both very gracious and signed the cd jacket. I told Lyle we could not wait for the start of the concert he responded it won’t be long now and that they were on their way back to prepare for it. We said thank you and goodbye got back in the car and of course it was a fantastic concert and a night I will never forget. R.I.P. Lyle Mays 🙏🏽✌🏽♥️

In my humble opinion the Pat Metheny Group (in all of its various lineups) was and still is the finest assembly of muscians to ever take the stage. Genius in melodic line, phrasing and intonation by Pat and Lyle (RIP). Eclectic. Inclusive. Heart Felt. One runs out of phrasing. Pat Metheny is the finest guitarist on the planet…and beyond.

Lyle once said it, Pat had the ability to take something so sparse and make it so evocative. He is so evocative with every single note and he is telling story with so much feeling. Every single time. And when you go see him play live, he doesn’t just bring one guitar, he plays a dozen different ones and sometimes two or three in a single tune. Every show takes you on a journey. I’ve been to several dozen of Pats concerts over the last 43 years and he just keeps getting better at it! His skill and ideas are amazing to watch unfold before your very eyes. I’ve seen the “same show” on multiple tours and you would think maybe it would be identical, but it’s not. It’s always a little different, depending on how he feels and the feeling from the crowd. A lot of improvisation every night, keeps it interesting. I hope you make it a point to go and see him soon. I know everyone misses the “Group” but Pat is amazing to watch in any scenario. I love watching your reactions to Pats music. Also very evocative responses to his playing. Keep it up guys!

I actually saw The Pat Metheny group as an opening act when their first album was released. It was at the Roxy theater in Hollywood. He blew everyone away. I can still see them performing "San Lorenzo" and being absolutely mesmerized by this incredibly talented young guitarist. He constantly amazes me. San Lorenzo is still my favorite Metheny tune after all these years. Give it a listen some time, you won't be disappointed.

@@mauriciodelarosa2449 By the way, I went to the gig with a really good guitarist friend of mine. He noticed Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and George Duke standing by the stage and he said "C'mon." We introduced ourselves (please remember this is at a time when Jazz and Jazz Fusion were very popular) and told them we just wanted to shake their hands, and thank them for all the wonderful music they had provided to the World. All three gentlemen were very humble and nice to us. We didn't act like star struck teenagers, or ask for their autographs. We just wanted to shake their hands. A night I will never forget.

I too saw Pat Metheny at the Roxy in February 1979 and again that year in December. Both shows were spectacular! BTW Ticket prices were $6.50 and $7.50 respectively. Back then the Roxy was THE premier showcase venue for many of the great rock, jazz, progressive bands of the 70's and 80s. Too bad it became just another dance club in recent years. There's nothing like a small intimate venue to experience a live show!
@gregghernandez2714

@@sandraandmichaelfield1602 Yeah, there were some great clubs back in the days. At the Roxy I saw everyone from The Pointer Sisters to Tower of Power to Gil Scott Heron, to The Wall of Voodoo to Weather Report. That was before you had to go to the bank and take out a loan just to see some great live music. From what I remember the headliner was Joe Sample's (from the Crusaders) Pressure Cooker. Pat Metheny blew that band away.

I'm still hoping you get around to the first Pat Metheny Group album (1978) - the one with the white cover. The group was just a quartet at that point, so Lyle Mays played a bigger part than later on. There are a lot of memorable melodies on that album.

"The White Album" is a beauty. I disagree with your statement about Lyle having a diminished role later on. His orchestration was the lifeblood of the PMG. There is no PMG without Lyle. Thank God they blessed us with their magnus opus before he transitioned from this world. RIP Lyle

PS: I remember Pat saying that on "Speaking of now" he invited some new musicians (the most important gain was the inclusion of the incredible drummer and percussionist Antonio Sanchez, who brought lots of new drive into the compositions of Pat and Lyle), who shared the mutual love for the music of PMG. The new line-up proved its possibilities and soon they were the ones who were ready to lift and carry the most developed and sophisticated body of work - 72 minutes long "The Way Up" (2005), regrettably the last PMG recording.

More brilliance from the Pat Metheny Group. Won the Grammy for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” in 2003 with this one. You may remember that year as the one where “Best New Artist”, Norah Jones took home a few awards. Er, no Pedro on this effort, but yes, the outstanding Richard Bona is who you hear. Sadly, this one was nearing the end of collaborations with Lyle, with 2005’s This way up, being the last. Saw many of their flawless live shows, back in the 80’s and 90’s. They played small, and large venues in the greater L.A. area. From the signature opening notes of “Phase Dance”, it was pure bliss every time. Lots of gems to pick from P.M.G. for future reactions. This could be another epic rabbit hole. It is a joy to watch your genuine emotion, combined with your overall musical knowledge, on so many of these video postings. Love your channel. Cheers to you both.

You guys are clearly sophisticated enough to appreciate the album "IX" by composer, singer, and master sax player Bendik Hofseth. Surely before your time in 1991, after being sought out and hired by Steps Ahead to fill the great Michael Brecker's shoes when he departed them (with the world going WHO the heck is this unknown Norwegian kid on sax that's joining this world class band?), he did some astounding work with Steps Ahead (who they didn't know was his dream band to join!) where he more than earned his place among fans, and he ultimately put out more than a dozen albums and later went on to become chairman of the World Composers Organization, CIAM, where he represented 2.6 million composers and lyricists worldwide. "IX" is an amazing piece of work with some of the most evocative lyrics and emotional songs and saxophone playing you may ever hear. The music ranges from crazy inventive up tempo to touching lyrics such as the wisdom from a father... the cast of foreign musicians on the album is also astoundingly amazing behind him, since I play guitar, the guitarist on the album is fantastic, as evidenced quickly on Passicaglia. He also leverages Mike Mainieri and Tony Levin from Steps Ahead, and Oystein Sevåg, another Norwegian artist you should seek out, plays keyboard on the album. Bendik is some amazing merger of muse, Steely Dan level of writing and producing and virtuoso sax soloist. At 65, I've listened to Jazz, Pop and Rock music for a lot of decades now (seeing most of the greats like George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Bob James, Dave Brubeck, etc. in concert), and "IX" still ranks in the top 5 of albums of all time for me. If his sax solo on Proceed doesn't tear you up a bit, you should immediately get your heart checked. And Janus In Love and Love Gasoliine are just great love songs. Hope you'll give it a listen, I'm sure there's tracks there that you could introduce a whole new generation to this artist and landmark album. open.spotify.com/album/3NCaltiPAlSmtp8dLUmjXK Lust for Life is one of my favorite Bendik compositions he did with Steps Ahead. Just an epic song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uJlIzhqCOME.html

You were mentioning your Digitech pedal. I saw in your video list that you´re using the RP-500. I don´t own the RP500 but I have programmed this sound on many FX units (RP255, all Boss GT series models, Line 6 Helix, Axe FX...). To get a Pat Metheny tone use the Jazz120 or better the 2101 CLN amp model (that´s what Pat uses since the mid 90s). Set the bass to 2 or 3, mids to 6 - 8, treble below 5. Use the JC120 cabinet (If you´re using headphones/mixer). (Or direct, if you´re connecting the RP500 to your acoustic combo) Use the EQ block with bass flat, mid frequency at 800 Hz + 3dB, treble either flat or -3-6 dB (experiment with the frequency). No Noise Gate. Engage the Detune effect, set it to "post", -8ct, level between 10 and 25. Engage the Digital Delay, set it between 400 and 450 ms with 3 audible repeats, mix: rather subtle, you don´t want to really hear the repeats standing out. Engage the Lexicon Hall reverb, set it to 3,5 - 4 seconds, predelay around 70 ms, liveliness and level to taste. The RP500 is rather limited. From the detune block on the chain should be in stereo but the RP500 can´t do that because the detune effect is only in mono. You also could try the TC Chorus instead with speed around 40, width at 40-50 and mix between 10 and 25 but I don´t know if the chorus is stereo either. Hi Nick and Lex! Pat Metheny is just sooooo good! Incredible guitarist, writer and arranger and, if that wasn't enough, he seems like a great guy in the interviews I've seen. I saw him live in the 80's at a theater in Salem, MA on Halloween.....the show was "spooky" good! 😁 There's a RU-vid video of him playing his song Have You Heard (one of my favorites) live in 1989 on a music show called Night Music that was hosted by the sax player, David Sanborn and I'll post the link. The video quality isn't great, but the audio is pretty good and the performance is awesome (that night's show also featured Todd Rundgren and there are also a couple videos available of the songs he performed, which are also great). Here's the link... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ppA9p6Rboqw.html

Since you are so great fans of Pat Metheny, you have to listen to Rio Frio by Metro. It is one of the most beautiful jazz-fusion tunes ever, it makes me very emotional every time I listen to it. You should really check it out, I'm sure you both will love it!

Biggest Pat supporter? Guys, it’s not even close. It’s me. (We have some lovely gift certificates for our runners up.) Now that this been established, we need to talk about The Way Up. Do it on Patreon. Every piece of music you’ve ever loved has led you to this piece. It’s truly an epic composition. You will need hydration and energy bars to make it through the masterpiece. I would take the day off work the next day. It will change you. It will delight you in places you didn’t even think you had. If you won’t do it for us Pat fans…or the children…do it for Marley.

There are many options.... Nick would be an outstanding Senator from the Great State of Colorado. This one's easy. Nick is intelligent, boyish good looks... and can handle any Holdsworth questions that may come up in a debate. He appeals to the young demo and we can help guide his campaign. Lex's bass skills are emerging to such a degree that critics are saying she's the new Jaco. She's mastered both the pick and pluck, at least as far as the Air Bass is concerned. I think we can pull a few strings and put her on tour opening for Esperanza Spalding. That just leaves Marley. I'm sitting on a warehouse of milk bones and Greenies. I know Marley's type. He can be bought. If all this fails, we still have Nick's guitar teacher. I know she's on board. But in the end, these are smart people. Clearly Pat has them under his spell. No serious music lover can resist him. They will make the right decision. We just need to persuade them that their reaction to this unusually great piece would bring a pleasure to others that is literally incalculable and would be worthy of an honorary Grammy. I know they will. The Way Up is their destiny... as it is to anyone who want to experience the peak of what music has to offer... It's time guys...
