I have used the charm packs. They seem to be just the right size. But I do have 1 cake layer, 10 inch squares, of Christmas from years past and I’ve even bought the moda cake mix recipe to make something. I just love this fireside chats. You inspire me to go through my scraps an tidy up a bit so that I can get to those projects that are just waiting. And I love aurifil thread. What a great chat on thread sizes! Now I want to try a 30 wt for blanket stitch and the 80 fo hand appliqué. Thank you pat. Now off to treat myself to a totaling mat.
I purchased a the Bloomtopia kit from Fat Quarter shop. This is my 1st precut. Now I need to get busy. I'm a little nervous to make the first cut. I love your chat, I always learn something new about so many things, quilting, organization, tools and don't forget the yummy snacks.
I love layer cakes because you can also use it for the other cuts if needed. Nothing goes to waste. Very versatile. Love your videos. Keep them coming. I learn something new all the time. Thank you!
I use fat quarters the most. You get a wide variety for your projects and the colors are coordinated. I learn a lot from your chats. The Aurifil talk was great; I learned so much and I plan to try some of the other sizes. I have used Aurifil 50 since I started quilting because that was recommended by our teacher.
Always so wonderful to watch your video wonderful tips and information! I like both jelly rolls and layer cakes. I also adore the mini charm pack. Happy sewing!!
Hi pat, my favourite pre cut size is a jelly roll. I make quilt as you go 10 1/2 inch squares and make them into a 5x5 square lap quilt. I've made a few for new babies gifts. I also have made a couple for my friends elderly parents to keep them warm over winter. I like nothing better than making a quilt and gifting it to someone special.
Fat quarters are my favorite,,they don't take up much room, and you can go thur and pick out colors that look good together then add a background and use for your next quilt project , just love them.
Hi Pat, thanks for your motivation. I started teaching my self to quilt when the bi centennial quilting was taking off. Then life and kids happened. When I retired about six years ago, I came back to quilting. Wow things had changed, pre cuts! Started with a layer cake.
Kath here -- First time watching one of your fireside chats. Thank you for all the information. Enjoyed it! I love all precuts, but right now am really into layer cakes -- easy to use when making quick project quilts using large blocks.
Happy Valentine's day! Pat every time I watch one of your tutorials I feel inspiration to get organized, and remember why I love quilting so much. A year or so ago I read a book "15 minutes of play" I loved the book! I love the thought that I deserve to "play" every day..That being said, I sometimes get overwhelmed with sew alongs, quilt of the month clubs and all the projects I want to sew🤣 So I tune in and realize I need to organize and prioritize. THANKS PAT!! Don't save little pieces of fabric if you aren't going to use them. I love layer cakes and jelly rolls, they are very versatile. Have an awesome weekend!!
I'm enjoying the ideas you're giving on managing scraps. So helpful! As a newer quilter, I've been saving every scrap with no idea what to do with them. And now I have 5 half empty scrap bins and about 3 piles of scraps throughout my sewing rooming 😳😩. Thanks for giving some advice on directions I can take with these scraps. As for favorite precut, maybe the layer cake for it's versatility. 🐿
Explaining the thread was a big help. Especially in how to use them. I have the same rotating mat. I love it. Every quilter should gift it to herself. I was doing so good at cleaning up every day. And I got behind during Christmas. Talk about a mess. But I finally finished Christmas. I have designed a mermaid quilt. Which drawing a mermaid is giving me trouble. I have gifted one of your patterns oh my stars to a little boy whose dad is in the coast guard. And i have giraffe quilt to make.also a Carpenters wheel quilt. So I am only 3 behind. I sew every day. Precuts I dont use but if I bought one it would be 10x 10. Have a wonderful week.
I love the layer cakes because you get to make larger blocks , like triangles and if your real lazy that day you can make up a fast give away in a rush. Then I like the 2 1/2 strips because I hate having to cut !!
Thank you so much for your explanation of the Aurifil thread and the different weights...I use 50wt for my piecing but now am excited to try the other weights for appliqué or quilting. I also use the rotating mat (I love notions and rulers) and find it so handy. As for precuts, I think I’ve used them all...and I’m currently making the Fat Quarter Shop’s paper pieced Log Cabin using a Honey Bun (1 1/2” strips) perfect for the log cabin, no cutting. I think I’ve used Jelly Rolls the most, so far. Thanks for all your inspiration!
Hi Pat, I liked all your button projects. Very cute! I need to be walking with you! I live in GA so we don’t have that many extremely cold days. We have had a lot of rain this winter though. My favorite precuts are Jelly Rolls. There’s just a lot you can do with them. I hope you have a lovely Valentine’s Day! 🤣
My favorite pre-cut size is a layer cake or charm. In terms of the one that I’d start with - it is the charm pack! Easy to manage and lots of options for quilt blocks! One of my favorite, easy to do go-to blocks is the disappearing 9 patch. Of course it can be done with any size squares but really like doing it with the charm packs. Great and informative video. Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge and ideas! Love your previous finishes - so cute!
March...I like this idea Quilty March 2020, and I have just printed the page.....just not sure yet how to proceed..Thanks for the inspiration regarding the thread sizes and scrap idea....Well done Pat.
Hi Pat. Thank you for you great videos. I really enjoy them. They are full of interesting things. The pre cut that I like to try is a jelly roll . So far this is the only pre cut that I've bought to try but haven't used it as like you I've got many things on the go. Lol Right now I'm taking a class on English paper piecing an of course I didn't take the class that made a tote I had to make a lap size quilt. What was I thinking for the first time of learning. Lol Good thing it's a 7 month class( 1 Saturday a month). Thanks again Pat
I have only used a jelly roll. It was perfect for the braid pattern and made two table runner tops. Hope to try using a layer cake next since I'm not good at picking fabrics. Thanks for the fireside chat! So much info for me, a newbie, to take in and learn about. Just subscribed.
I love the fat quarter bundles because you can make a large quilt, but if you are new to quilting or on a fixed income, you can do a lot with a layer cake, even if you cut it down into four charm packs!
I generally use charm packs because I mostly make baby quilts. With some background fabric I can make a pretty nice baby quilt with one charm pack, And they are already cut up instead of having to cut layer cakes.
I like using layer cakes because I can cut so many different size blocks from them. I missed the Cupid Box and would love to receive that pattern and fabric. Thanks so much for sharing.
That cute little Love Letters block is just adorable...and that journal is set up so beautifully...I love the Layer Cakes because they are so versatile... hugs, Julierose
My favorite pre-cut is the jelly roll. I have made a few quilts with them and they are so versatile. I have never kept a journal, but it seems that it is a good way to document my projects.
I prefer to use layer cakes as they are the most flexible of all pre-cuts. I like the look of jelly rolls but find them annoying when sometimes the pinked edges shed flecks of fabric. Thanks Pat for taking us through the different thread weights of Aurifil - I LOVE using this thread and mostly use 50wt.
I am so glad you did that cost comparison with the Aurifil thread vs. other. I use Aurifil exclusively and a couple of my quilt buddies think I'm crazy to pay the price. Now I can let them know that not only is it the BEST thread, but more economical as well! I haven't tried 40 or 80 but think I will add a couple of those spools to my cart. My very favorite pre-cut is the layer cake. SO MANY ways to use them! Thanks Pat for another awesome Fireside Chat! ps I sew every day!
I have used the jelly rolls and 10" charm packs. I prefer the charm packs. Plus I love to let the package hang out so I can see how pretty they are, makes me happy just to look at them!
I love all the pre-cuts. I use fat quarters the most, but my all time favorite is the mini charms. I always buy 2 everytime a new line comes out but my downfall is I actually just hoard them and I like to just look at all the fabric designs. I keep telling myself that one day I will make something but alas I still have yet to travel that road. Just call me the Happy Mini hoarder!
I love the jelly rolls for use in quilt blocks like log cabins. I also enjoy using the 5” squares to make half-square triangles. I prefer to buy my neutrals in precuts because it saves me time!
I’ve never used a precut. Have been quilting less than 1.5 yrs. I would have to find a pattern I like first before deciding, but I think the 10 inch squares are nice. P.S. I just remembered: I bought a jelly roll on sale last summer that I put away to make a jelly roll rug “some day.” 😊
Since I love any kind of quilting fabric, it’s hard to choose . Mmmmmmm well perhaps a layer cake! Snip, snip and you have 4 packs of charm squares! Snip again and you have 16 packs of mini charms! They’re very versatile, don’t ya think?
Pat , thanks for explaining the different thread sizes for me. I never knew about them. Mom always told me to use 50/50 size so that's what I done. Mom can't be wrong , right !! 😇😇
I love jelly rolls but have a bunch of charm packs and just purchased my first Jolly Bar! Thank you for explaining the different thread weights. I may have to try the heavier for some machine quilting. ❤️
Jelly rolls are my favorite I love the variety and there are so many easy patterns for them. I've only been quilting a couple years. I really enjoy your videos.
I love Aurifil but I pay $18.99 for the 50 wt. here in Canada. You guys in the US are so fortunate! I’ve never used a precursor so any of them would be a learning experience.
My choice is the charm packs, so many fun colors and patterns. I ran to check out the color core on my Aurifil threads- thanks for the great thread info.. Love Aurifil thread! Come to MT for a walk on dirt roads- no traffic😀
Loved the chat today. You inspire and educate me in so many areas. THANKS! My favorite precut is a layer cake. I like it because I can always cut it down into 4 charm packs or even into many of the 2 1/2 inch squares.
I love jelly rolls. My quilting tends to be more on the modern side with pops of color. Vibrant jelly rolls are a good way for me to go. Loved the information on threads! Am going to have to pay more attention to what I use when and seek out Aurifil!
I have used the 5 inch charm pack. I love that you get a great variety of fabric in these packs. I have a layer cake, however, I'm not sure what I'm going to use it for yet. I love your giveaway because I just love pink. Thanks for the great videos.
Love your videos! Thank you for all the wonderful tips!! I enjoyed the thread information tonight, thank you. My favorite pre-cut is jelly rolls. Lots of patterns and books with beautiful quilts using jelly rolls.
Your thread talk was great. Yesterday I needed to buy thread, and the aurofil was on sale, but more expensive than another one. I ended up not getting any. I never thought to do a length comparison, which I do in the grocery store all the time. I am going back for the aurofil sale 😉.
I have used quite a few jellyrolls, but my new obsession is layer cakes! I ❤️ them! I really want to try a mini charm, but I am intimidated by how small they are. I need to come out of my comfort zone.
I tend to go with fat quarters just because the amount of fabric gives me more versatility when I don't have a specific project in mind. I love your heart block. I should make one since my birthday is on Valentine's Day and I have nothing heart-shaped in my house. Shame on me! Ha, ha!
