@@devoniguess1674 I’m a guitar player and I wish I could be half the guitarist he is, he’s crazy with rhythm guitar and when he dabbled in solos/leads in the band the germs I knew I had to learn from him, he is one of my influence in my band that I’m starting him and Darby both
He does look painfully average at first glance. But that talent, confidence and charisma showed the world how he's 1 of the most godly characters of rock.
@@milesr94 yeah and he’s a happy dude!!! Glad he’s smiling and continues to kick ass even after the tragedies he went through losing two of his friends Darby and Kurt.
@@atrainofthought99 agreed mate so humble and being really good mates with cobain cobain loved pat who couldn’t? The germs! Nirvana! Foo fighters! Dude knows how to play guitar yet he doesn’t love himself like every other rockstar glad to have his signature on my nirvana guitar along with Dave and krist!
@@atrainofthought99 he’s the best! I’m a lefty it’s on a right handed guitar also signed by chad channing and dale crover and krist wrote nirvana above his name it’s on google haha I got it displayed above my bed framed so no smoke or anything can touch it I love it! I got it in 2014
So Dave brings up the way Kurt Cobain met Pat at the SST superstore, where Pat was basically working to stay alive. In a 2011 interview with Guitar World Pat elaborated a little further on just how down on his luck he was. He had no pot to piss in and when Kurt invited him to join Nirvana had no money to buy himself a plane ticket. So he pawned his last remaining guitar. After arriving in Seattle, Kurt went "So where's your guitar?" and after hearing the story, Kurt went "No problem, I have this relationship with Fender, they'll hook you up!" before handing him a Nirvana Credit card. And as Dave said in several interviews, when Kurt brought Pat into the rehearsal space for the first time, everybody was surprised that he was still alive, since he fell off the face of the planet completely. So yeah, we have to give Kurt Cobain a huge thank you for saving Pat from obscurity.
@@Humblemumble7 "Modest or restrained" is amoung the words synonymous with low key according to Oxford languages, would you argue that Pat acted in any way opposite to this definition in the video above?
@@Snandra66 We are talking about a dude who was in the Legendary punk band The Germs, Legendary rock band Foo Fighters, and NIRVANA for christ sake! So no, I'm sorry, lowkey just doesn't seem fitting to the dude all. But "flamboyant and animated" I'd say that's a perfectly accurate description.. I mean, "animatedly lowkey" is 100% contradictory
It’s funny. You’d never guess Pat is 61 years old. He always puts off a super youthful vibe. He even looks young-ish. His hair is the only thing that really shows his age!
Yeah, people forget that The Germs were in the original wave of punk back in the 70's. I think a lot of people think that they were a band from the 80's and that he joined Nirvana shortly after they disbanded.
Pat Smear has got to be one of the most underrated rock legends of all time... just because he's been with so many bands, for so long, and he's such a low-key down-to-earth guy, it's amazing how easy it is to forget the life he's fully lived... and he might be around for a few more decades continuing to be awesome.
Pat is a great guy, I worked for a nirvana fan site many years ago and he was one of the few guys who took the time out of his day to answer the typical same old questions that get asked over and over.
I spent many hours in school on that website (assuming it's Live Nirvana?) This was well before Google existed and you still had to guess most of the Nirvana lyrics, or source em from the live Nirvana site. Great days
I love how he walks out on the stage looking thoroughly delighted to meet the audience, and smiles at everyone through the shows. Such a great vibe from this guy, really love him.
Just read this entry from The Germs' wikipedia, says everything really. "Crash (born Jan Paul Beahm) and Smear (born Georg Ruthenberg) decided to start a band after being kicked out of University High School for antisocial behavior, allegedly for using "mind control" on fellow students."
I'd love to see Pats guitarcollection. I mean even in the Nirvana days he must have been picking up cool stuff everywhere. In the early Foo days Dave always joked about how Pat and his wife were searching for guitars to match his outfits.
@@standinsilence In the “Garage Band” doc, where the Foos play in the garages of fans, he gave an 11 year old his Stratocaster. It was probably. 4,000 guitar, and he just gave it to the kid.
Now after all these years, he is aging well for a wild-man. He just looks like some ordinary guy I'd see in Home Depot or Walmart or somewhere like that. It is awesome! He is a very well-earned rock star. He blends in with ordinary people. He is a wild man.
I recently saw a John Frusciante interview where he talks about how much he loved Pat Smear way back when he was in The Germs! He listed him as one of his earliest inspirations. It's crazy how much impact Pat Smear has had on guitarists and rock music overall!!!
I once heard someone say, "Whenever Pat plays, it looks like he was an audience member who was asked to play for his favorite band." I love this description of him
Smear is the coolest player on the planet. His constant smiling has been an inspiration for decades. Seems like a 100& genuine guy. I love what I know about 'em.
I met Pat outside a club the Foo Fighters were playing at in 1996. He was one of the friendliest people I have ever. I was a complete stranger to him and he treated me like I was an old friend. I mentioned that I had seen him with Nirvana a few years earlier and he told me a crazy story about something about something that happened at that specific show I was at. I’ve talked to other people that have met him and they’ve all had similar experiences with him. He’s a great guy.
Pat looks like he would be so cool to just hang and jam in a studio with. That's what I would like to do if I ever got a chance to hang with Pat. Seems like fame hasn't gone to his head which is the best thing that can happen to anyone who gets some type of fame. He must have a great guitar collection.
This was a really good video!!! Pat Smear is one of the most laid back, personable and fun loving guy you could ever meet!!! He really enjoys what he does and lives life to the fullest!!!🙂🙃😉😊🤘🤙👍👏
Pats hilarious... often rocking out at the wrong moments at the live gigs :D its like he zones out into his own Narnia... but the sounds that come out of that guy.. HEAVY! :D
Aw it kinda hurt to watch how pat is always all smiles but when they asked him if he'd go back to relive the nirvana days the way he answers that it's too sad. 😭
this guy has always fascinated me can't you see those eyes that are always closed it seems like this guy is always in a good mood he always has a smile you'll see he never had a big head! pat is just a fucking super cool, super badass dude
The Germs live video is great. Darby Crash was already starting shit, saying, "I just want a beer and damage!" and then Pat Smear suddenly starts fighting a security guard.
PAT SMEAR worked in the SST store, and SST were offered to sign NIRVANA before SUB POP, and Greg Ginn was not interested. I bet he chews his hand still today
I used to hang out with the Germs 40yrs ago n used to go to Pat house on Bundy n Pico n we would watch soap operas n smoke n drink beer......Pat was the nicest guy back then n Im sure he still is........would love to hook up with him again.....
