I was intrigued when you said at 7:27 that Rolitoland was mostly lost media. I'm part of flashpoint archive, a flash games/animations archival community. I scoured through the internet archive and found some of the animations you mentioned as lost. I've compiled everything I could find here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mAOTApQXj24.html

I've always loved their use of the self fulfilling prophecy motif with zigotons. Their prophecy says patapons will cause destruction when they reach earthend, and so they try to stop them, which causes patapons to cause the destruction. Had they not tried to stop them, patapons wouldn't cause any destruction to zigotons. I think that's quite neat :>

I've played and been a Patapon Fan ever since i was 7, but growing up in a poor family i could never afford to play these games as a child, so i would stick to what little gameplay there was on youtube to watch, sometimes just putting videos and re-watching them so much to the point of me memorizing what actions the person took and pretend to play the game myself! All i had access too were those flash games you'd find on websites where after defeating the 3rd level, you'd unlock a wallpaper creator, and that was the most fun i'd had! Even without having access to the game, i learned everything about it, strategies, bosses, music, characters, lore etc. And it always was devastating to not be able to share or talk about this game with people my age because of most of them being into more serious or edgy games, so they would instantly say "That's a dumb game" or "Un-fun 2D Game." Years later, when i learned that i could emulate the psp on mobile and on computer, i was in awe, and lost my mind about finally being able to play the game i had followed for so many years. The hours i've spent in Patapon 2 & 3 are insane, over 1000 hours on my current P3 Gamefile and well over 3k on my Patapon 2 game, i sincerely hold this franchise close to my heart and always will, and i'm glad to have seen someone make such a well edited and dedicated video about this awesome title. And i'm glad to see some more people become interested in the game as time goes by (And i did just like you said in the video, i too recommend people trying the 2nd game to get them into the game back in the day lol). I will never NOT stop saying this is the best game of all time. A Patapon Fan for life!
@mchaosg
@mchaosg 2 года назад
That's amazing. I remember when I first discovered emulation too, the floodgates really opened for me. I was finally able to play all these games I could only read about on fan sites. Then after replaying 2 and 3 on emulator revived my love for the franchise. I was surprised that there's still an active community, and I have made great memories playing multi w peeps in discord. God bless that Depths of Infinity mod, it actually gave me incentive to continue on the dlc quests, and I've beaten some of em w/ just me and a friend. I still own all 3 of my copies of the games, the same ones I bought when I was younger. Patapon is one of my favorite games of all time, sad to see we'll most likely never get a 4th game. You also forgot a Patapon easter egg in Playstation All-Stars. When using Big Daddy's level 3 attack on the God of War Stage, he will cause the whole stage to become underwater. If the Patapons are out when this happens, Gekoronpa rarepons (The Frog ones) can be seen swimming in the background until Big Daddy's level 3 ends. Thanks for making such a great video! I just found this video and felt super happy seeing so many people liked these games too. I had played all 3 of these games. Patapon 2 was my favorite one, the minigames, the levels, the new rarepons, the added classes and the heropon masks was super cool and I remember building a powerful army with divine/demon weapons to take on the harder versions of the bosses. I did like the cooler looking Uberhero’s and them having different cries of battle when you activate the hero mode in 3 but I really wish they kept having an army of patapon as yeah, the 3 patapon were pretty weak and I had to rely on my Uberhero alone and when they went down it was basically over. Eventually I powered my default Yaripon enough to to throw three spears and strike lightning to hit crits to just hit max damage and kill most these things in a couple hero mode throws. It was satisfying but took a LONG time compared to patapon 2.

One thing I noticed between watching clips of 1+2 and 3 was the unbelievable amount of power creep. You were lucky to deal a few hundred damage per hit in the first two games, even with the best equipment. By the post-game of 3, you could deal damage in the mid SIX digits, and high-level bosses could be taken out in seconds once you get Fever mode.

My step brother had found a PSP while on a construction site but it was to badly damaged and didnt work. it still had a game inside and he knew I had a PSP myself. So next time i visited him he gave me the game. That game being Patapon. I never heard of it and it didnt really look that interesting but i gave it a shot. The music was the first thing that got me hooked. I would play dancing to the beats as I played in my room with headphones and sing along to keep rhythm. It became the only game i really played on my PSP, and then i found out it had 2 other games and i went straight to GameStop to pick them. I still listen to the soundtrack when i workout since it always fills me up with motivation and good memories

I agree 100% what you said, thanks for that vid. I met patapons when I was ~16, my younger brother and cousin asked for help in crossing the desert. I thought it was a silly children's game, I laughed at them... and then I failed... I've never been so wrong, the game was incomparable to anything i have played before, the start was hard and worth it. I spent over 200 hours in the first game, almost 400 hours in the second and 800 in the third! (almost 90% playing single, grinding and looking for ways to go solo). Patapon was probably one of the most pivotal games when it came to my formative years. I had initially picked it up and was instantly hooked from when I was merely 6 or 7. Fast forward to the age of 17 and I found myself finally able to replay the 2nd and 3rd Patapon games through a pc emulator, and in doing so helped create a more “mature” perspective of the game that I developed alongside the nostalgia I had for the series. I look forward to its spiritual successor and what it has in store. Heck, I may try and find an emulator of the first game, replay the whole trilogy, then play project jabberwocky to really get the most out of this beloved rhythm series.

I always wanted to play these games as a kid but I only ever caught the very end of the demo release at Walmart where you could play it on those overhead screens. I loved it and wanted to ask my mom to buy it for me for Christmas or something but I've never been able to remember the name and the demo station at our Walmart stopped playing Patapon after that first time I tried it. @@mchaosg that's nice to hear! Take your time! Also the story why I was stuck playing Locoroco 2 and not other games on my PSP back in the day was the left d-pad was drifting (I guess that's foreshadowing that the following console I'll own gets drift too) and I think it was a coincidence that Locoroco has a control scheme that mostly used the shoulder buttons. Patapon veteran here too, my favorite game series of all time since my childhood. I still remember all the hassle I made my dad go through to get me the download voucher from when part 2 was released. And I still remember how much I'd google for more news after the 3 teaser came out and long it took me to past it once it was finally available (didn't have online to play it with so I just grinded/got insanely lucky on some bosses) Although I'm sad we likely won't ever get anything new or proper recognition for the series I still love that long time fans are still around and there's always new fans being introduced

I remember playing the heck out of Patapon 2's demo on my brothers PSP and Patapon 3 (tho i could never get past on of those dungeons that were really hard) I was like 6-7 years old or something and i remember the art style captivating my younger self a lot (probably because i really liked warm colors and simple shapes so my brain just activated withthe game) When the remasters launched for the ps4 i didnt stutter a second and bought them both, then got my psp repaired and restarted the third, and honestly, what a journey I owe a lot of who i am to this games and their simplistic style, to the point that hearing Patapon 3's intro song gets me kind of emotional and if i ever hear that classic "Do you hear me?" sound (the one during the blackout before meeting hatapon) that typically sounds at the start of the game you know im screaming And lastly, the alarm at 1:12:39 scared the hell out of me

Thank You Tucker for the Video, I Love the Patapon series as well. A HUGE Fan here! I remember I’d drawn Patapons in my Middle School to my High School days. And Even after Japan Studio Shut Down. I’ve Thanked the Former Sony CEO Shawn Layden for making games like Patapon to be on the spotlight. Even Replied me with a Patapon Gif. And Would it be awesome in an Alternate Universe that Patapon 4 might happen with a Mario Maker with a bang? Maybe Before Shutting down Japan Studio? That will be Great? But truth was it didn’t happen and it’s reality still 😞 So Thank you! And to Kotani-San, Rolito-San! Sony and their Producers for this Great Series to love and enjoy 😊

Patapon was and still is my favourite game series. When I was 9-12 yo I was drawing my own Patapon 4 comic series. The episodes mostly contained just some patapon fighting through levels with word-sound effects and them saying stuff like "Take that you monster!" 😆, but it also had some intence plot. Each episode featured one mission. The new things I introdused: 1.each patapon in your army is now able to progress to Uberhero(1.normal 2.hero 3.uberhero) 2.new classes like potion brewers, artillery carriers etc.(double shielder what???) 3.crafting(bc minecraft ofcourse lmao) 4.consumables like food, potions and drinks 5.hunts are back 6."maps" - each map features several levels and you'll only get the next map after completing the last mission on a map(about them later) 7.new arena mode - "tank conquest" - similar to OG arena but now you get tanks to help you The thing is I was playing all 3 games at the same time, so the plot of Patapon series kinda meshed together when I was a kid. Because of that - the plot features Gong returning(this is because I saw Gong death from Patapon 1 on RU-vid). Of course my Patapon 4 featured new Dark heroes, new Archfiends, new bosses and stuff. //I've made 30+ episodes overall// (Sorry for writing so much, it's just really important to me) Another thing is that im from Russia and did not know any English which meant that I had to play Patapon 1 and 2 pirated "translated" versions.(The translation was really bad but also they broke the game in a way that certain unit/equpment combinations crashed the game on certain mission. This had really slowed down my playthrough. ) Most of my friends were bad at the game. So Patapon series was one of the things to make me think that I might have music abilities(I make music now). I can go on forever, but the main point is - this game is truly in my heart. Unfortunally I've never purchased it so I didn't have any chance to play VS mode,, I might use some designs I had for Patapon 4 in my future projects . Thanks for reading!

I know this video is more than half a year old by now but I was the same way as like everyone, I found the wayward demo of Patapon 2 on the PS store since I had just gotten Wi-Fi and was really excited to check out what I could do with it on my PSP and instantly fell in love with Patapon 2 and played it for honestly way too long. Since I was a pretty small kid though I never kept up with games or their releases so I had no idea a Patapon 3 had come out until about 6 years later when I played it in 2017 on PPSSPP so I never had access to the orignal multiplayer things. Unlike most everyone else I feel kinda black sheepish in that Patapon 3 is honestly my favorite I love the designs of the Uberheros and how if you put in the time you can create a true monster of a unit but I do agree with you on that the game is SUPER multiplayer focused and also how the Ton Chin and Kan really don't feel like they do anything to support you, it's much more Uberhero + meatshields rather than everyone working together as a cohesive unit. With how robust emulation and modding is though I'm always kinda holding out hope that somewhere down the line someone rebalances Patapon 3 and makes it so the game is a bit more forgiving with its health values and lets people tackle the more mutliplayer focused areas solo

Patapon and its sequels are some of those extremely immersive rhythm games. Even on the small PSP screen I was so enveloped in what my little army was doing, panicking when they were attacked, celebrating their victories, getting hype when they were charging up. The music truly made the action of that game perfect. One of the few games where the art direction, gameplay, audio, and everything else really blended together in one, clearly-defined and memorable experience. And I still put the music on and drum out the beats as they sing.

To be honest i only really like and play constantly Patapon 2. It hit the perfect balance between the two to the point of being one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences i ever seen alongside Locoroco 2 (made by same developers btw, more devs should take note from both imo). Patapon 1 is a good first try experiment but it can be a bit clunky and unnecesarily frustrating at times and 3 is so unbalanced and too much strange decisions that i think is one of my most hated games, as unpopular it can sound. I respect personal opinions though, and i really liked the retrospective. 1 hour well spend 👍 Would you talk about Patafour?

I'm surprised you didn't mention the awful grinds for class skills or grass grinding in patapon 3. Especially class skills, since grass grinding can at least be avoided with multiplayer. Maxing Taterazay's shield skill for example, requires you to do 7667 perfect defense commands while running the class. That is, at bare minimum, almost nine hours of chaka chaka song. Not the fastest or slowest grind in the game - fastest goes to Kibadda while slowest is either Grenburr or Oohoroc - but that's still way waaaay too much.
@mchaosg
@mchaosg 2 года назад
I lightly grazed the topic during the explanation of the other two weapon classes starting at level 1 when unlocked - but in my eyes they aren't mandatory for progression through the main story. Grass grinding is clearly not an intended strat by the devs, it's just a happy accident. There's no real sense in grinding past level 32 unless you're playing competitively. But yes, they are insane lol
@manoflead643
@manoflead643 2 года назад
For the most part, I'd happily agree that class skills aren't necessary, honestly. Yarida's multi-spears will be unlocked anyway by playing, and so on and so forth. The issues come from two things. First and foremost, when you decide to try out new classes. Sure, if you've been levelling purely on Yarida for most of the game, you'll have the multi-spears skill levelled pretty good - but switch to Oohoroc, and even once it's levelled it'll be completely useless because it relies on its class skills to do anything. Vice versa if you switch to Yarida. Second is classes that rely on another class's class skill. Nobody will ever play the game through on Charibassa, as an extreme example. Even as a less extreme one, Cannassault without being boosted 8 levels by Pyokorider's class skill will be rather... limp. No singleplayer playthrough is going to realistically take long enough for someone to actually grind out many of the class skills; nobody is going into the last dungeon with their Grenburr rocking the full set of status immunities while attacking and getting to Zapper 5, let alone maxing it. It's like the class skill system was designed to make people grind for excessively long times, just to stomp pvp

I am happy that once in a while a youtuber would make a retrospective in the series and it really does deserved it as I think this is one of the games that truly wasn't able to meet it's fullest potential due to alot of circumstances both in the game, production, the company(Sony/SIE, Pyramid, and Japan interactive), and it's timing. There's plenty more I wanted to talk about but I am absolutely happy that Adachi and Kotani would return to make a spiritual successor to the series. Yes it may not be the Patapon we all knew and love but the DNA and shared experiences of the devs + more freedom in developing and time, I really think Project Jabborwocky have a high chance becoming a more recognised modern classic and the true successor to Patapon as a whole. I can't wait to see the baton being passed to the next game! I can't express how much excited I am as Patapon have a special place in my heart and the only number one.
