PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION & WATCH THE VIDEO BEFORE ACCUSING PATARA OR MYSELF OF ANIMAL ABUSE. THAT IS ABSURD.
Patara is an elephant sanctuary with over 50 elephants rescued from abusive tourist camps and they are actively working to increase the dwindling elephant numbers. Each day they only let in a small handful of guests as to not overwhelm the animals and to allow you a personalized experience.
While in Chiang Mai, Thailand I, of course, wanted to have some sort of elephant experience. However, I had a lot of research to do in order to find a reserve that provided safe homes for the elephants and not one of the many, many abusive elephant experiences. Y'all, I'm a major animal lover and vegetarian, I DID MY RESEARCH.
I came upon Patara Elephant Farm and quickly fell in love with their Elephant Owner for the Day experience. Let me just say that it was one of the greatest days of my life and I recommend it 100%.
Yes, Patara allows you to ride an elephant for a bit of the day but they do it in a humane and nonabrasive way. Y'all, elephants are strong and have been carrying people and loads for centuries. At Patara they teach you the proper way to mount and sit as to not in the slightest hurt the animal. Very compatible to riding a horse. Many elephant experiences throughout Asia include strapping a painful and tight chairs to a weak part of their back, then adding the weight of two humans causes cuts, brushing, and infection. Not to mention the conditioning in order for the elephants to cooporate is often abuse. AVOID AT ALL COSTS PLEASE.
Both Patara or Elephant Nature Park would be great options if you're in Northern Thailand.
Please read my blog post on gracegoesglobal.com for more on this amazing place and my day there.

*Almost all footage featuring myself was taken from the videos shot by the Patara videographer. Any other footage was taken by me.
**Sorry about the typo at the beginning! It's PatAra not PatEra. Thus to be human.

They look happy. Riding elephants is not what they were made for. I’m sure it was an amazing experience. I’m deeply saddened though at the rising of them. Please educate yourselves as to how an elephant is “Trained” in order to be ridden. It’s truly one of the most heartbreaking things you’ll ever watch I’m certain. There’s no malice or hatred behind my words. It’s simply beautiful to be so close to these magnificent creatures!

The elephants in this park look like they are treated quite well, for sure. No doubt. But consider this for a moment. These elephants have been abused in the past in many terrible ways at the hands of humans. They have physical scars as well as emotional and psychological scars. They were all brutalized in the process of breaking down their will to impose a tyrannical submission to the will of humans. But what is most compelling to me is that these animals have souls that are probably the closest to the human soul than any other species of mammal that walks on the planet. And their memories are in some ways sharper than human memory, and they can remember far back into the past. They laugh and they cry and they watch over their babies like humans do. They were humiliated in their previous slave lives by the will of humans, and when you climb up on their backs, you are once again imposing a kind of human demand of submission. What about their dignity? Don’t they have a right to be respected, not because they can be ridden, but just because they are majestic creatures with a right walk free on the planet like any other being? How do we know, if when a person climbs up on their back, they aren’t reminded once again of their former brutalized lives? Knowing this, I would be content to feed them, walk with them, rub their backs and just admire them and not take the chance that I would be reminding them once again of the horrors of the past. Think about it.

the only thing wrong, is riding on them,. everything else seems good, elephants look happy. The elephant nature park does not ride the elephants, I'm telling this in a helpful way. most people would pick the elephant nature park

I've talked about the issue of riding elephants at more length in my comments on some other elephant videos but my point is that riding them is not cruel or abusive as long as the elephant is not too old, has arthritis or is simply not in the mood for joy riding. Elephants who are socialized with people enjoy carrying them. Carrying people is in sync with their natural instinct to bond with , support and protect others in their social sphere. The elephant knows, as do you, that no other creature can hurt you whether you are underneath its belly, or on its back -- and this is salient in the elephant mind. Many of you can't see this but the socialized elephant loves being your protector -- and most times, riding him fulfills this innate sense.

Dear Grace I agree with you, and from looking at you tube and hundreds of elephant videos from all over the world, I think you were in the SWEET SPOT. There are a lot of perfectionists on the Internet who will TELL YOU what to do, etc. The elephants at Patara look well cared for, RELAXED, and HAPPY WITH THEIR TOURIST JOBS. The mahouts look the same way, as if they are sharing a happy job with their elephants. If most people could be so relaxed and happy at their jobs at a convenience store, or a factory, or wherever they work, man, life would be sweet. I've corresponded with the woman who takes care of the two, Mayapura, Temple Elephants, in India, and she says that the maximum weight for an adult elephant is 600 pounds. So I don't see how one skinny Caucasian person, Oriental person, or anybody belonging to the APE FAMILY, riding on an elephant, alone, is going to cause harm. If I was carrying a 15 pound monkey, for an hour, and then the monkey washed me and brushed me and massaged me in the river, I think that would be nice, and not too much to carry for a person like me. All of these perfectionists, or PERFECTIONISTAS LOL LOL never tell you not to ride a horse, or ride a camel. I understand that some humans will not eat meat, fish, or any animal that was living and slaughtered for food, BUT TO EXPECT EVERYONE TO FOLLOW MY RELIGION, OR MY DIET, or MY ANYTHING, is a bit foolish. Also, as a volunteer, I taught ESL here in the USA, and met many people from many cultures. I think you are very wise to other cultures, and if something was wrong or inappropriate at Patara Elephant Farm, you sixth sense would have caught on. I have subscribed to your channel, and look forward to learning more of what you have to teach us. Roger, an old man in Maine, USA

Are these rescued elephants and are they well treated? I would like to know before going there, thank you.
@thegracecass
@thegracecass 8 лет назад
+Moon Wolf Yes, they are all rescued from other tourist camps or from hard labor...that or they have been born at Patara. They are extremely well treated; I was like you and did my research to make sure I went to an ethical place. Not only does Patara rescue but they are also working hard to grow the ever decreasing elephant population. I highly recommend them.

I will be going soon to this elephant camp. I've heard the elephants hair is course like a wire brush. Did it hurt to ride them with bare legs? I've heard they give you pictures or a video to take home? How did they turn out?? Thank you for your video and for sharing ☺️

I'm not sure if this comment is too late, but they give you the overshirt to wear and we also were given thick pants to put on over out clothes to protect our legs from their bristly hair.

Another pet peeve of mine... LOL is the working animals we have here in the USA. They are called PETs, and there are hundreds of millions of them, mostly cats and dogs. Many are abused and abandoned. Every year, homeless shelters here in the USA euthanize (kill) many, many millions of these working animals, who have a job to do, which is to give us humans comfort and companionship, and sometimes aid us in other ways. So I don't see where all these perfectionists are giving you a hard time about riding an elephant, giving it a bath, and providing income for the mahout and his family, and LOVE TO THAT ELEPHANT. And should we ask most Hindus, many of whom refuse to eat cows, and worship them, along with elephants, what they think of us Europeans and Americans slaughtering and eating hundreds of millions of cows/cattle and other animals, so we can enjoy our BIG MACs at McDonalds? Well, if I keep going, I will fall off my soapbox and injure myself....LOL LOL Thanks for your video. Rog in Maine, USA

A lot of cruel abuse goes into the training that allows people to ride elephants.....ride and elephant and you're contributing to the abuse.
