If you can comfortably afford to buy a patek philippe, then probably "is it worth it?" isn't the number one question that comes to mind

No matter how rich someone is, they probably won’t enjoy getting shafted. If I charged a billionaire a million bucks for a Prius, and they thought they were getting Bugatti levels of quality, I think they’d have a problem

@@kart182 True, but I think a lot of it has to do with perception of value. The Prius analogy actually somewhat works for Louis Vuitton bags, which are thousands of dollars for what amounts to a PVC and brass handbag. I think there are many people who care more about feeling rich and demonstrating wealth than they do about what it is they're shelling out money for. I.e., so long as the Prius has a designer hood ornament, people will buy it.

It will never be in my price range but nor is the Mona Lisa or a brand new Rolls-Royce Phantom , but that has never stopped me from appreciating their existence as an object to look upon. Glad they are now 39mm. A friend of the family owns the older Calatrava, i think 33mm and my dad who isn't a watch person, who probably thinks Blancpain is something you need medication for and Bell & Ross is a comedy duo was asked how much do you think it cost, nearly had a heart attack when told.

Great video. I’m definitely buying a Patek 5231G when I reach a financial goal that I have in mind. But I love watches and you’re right if you don’t have that much appreciation for watches or the budget you could buy a Grand Seiko and be just as happy or if that is out of your budget you could buy an Orient and be thrilled. One of my favorite watches is a diver from micro brand called Lorier (which sell out fast) because it has a look of 1960s Omega and Rolex which remind me of the watch in Goldfinger. Watches I feel are a very personal thing.

Patek make ~70,000 watches a year while A. Lange & sohne makes 5,000, and does double assembly. The latter does this even with its base models, while Patek goes “over the top” with finishing on its complicated movements (not the base calatrava). I’d get a German watch for a simple watch (I’d still get a big date), I’d get a Patek if I wanted a complicated movement (and had body guards around me at all times as well as a billion $).

The cost of wear is probably free if you sell it eventually. Watches are the ultimate way to look your best and have someone else pay for it, if you buy the right watch. Patek is 100% in that category so if you can front the cash, you will get most of it back when you sell.

@themoderndandy713
@themoderndandy713 Год назад
Well, yeah, honestly. A watch looks nice on your wrist and tells the time. A cell phone tells the time, can call almost anyone, connects to the internet and RU-vid, streams live TV, tells you the weather, has games, has banking, etc. I like my pocket watch just fine, but I hope that if I decide to drop thousands of dollars on something that serves no real purpose beyond being a cumbersome way to tell the time, my family calls the mental hospital pronto. My pocket watch cost around a hundred dollars and tells time just as well as some unholy expensive Swiss thing.

Every Rolex has appreciated in value. So even if you have grown tired of it, you get your money back. Don’t buy a lower tier brand like Longines or Tissot because you are almost guaranteed to lose most of the value of it. If you love the watch, great, but don’t buy that tier to “save” money because it doesn’t actually save money.

I think that is TOTALLY the wrong reason to buy a watch. @themoderndandy713
@themoderndandy713 Год назад
Pocket watches have almost always been acceptable for black and white tie. It more had to do with formality back in ye old days when wristwatches were new and casual. I've heard the rule of never wearing a timepiece with evening formalwear, and I really have no idea where it came from; even in the Victorian era, men were wearing timepieces with white tie. The idea of the rule is that there should be no concern for time at an elegant, formal event, but there are seemingly obvious reasons why this might not be true. Say you're going to the opera - you probably need to know when to arrive, when it starts, and when to catch your ride home if you're not driving yourself. As a groom, you might need to be able to move things along at your wedding in a timely manner, which is better with a watch than a phone. It's more important to match the formality of your watch to your outfit - sport watches for more casual outfits and combinations, dress watches for combinations and suits, black dress watches or pocket watches for black tie, and pocket watches for morning dress and white tie.
@RajeshSahasrabuddhe
@RajeshSahasrabuddhe Год назад
@@themoderndandy713 Thanks - that makes sense. I will say that wearing a wristwatch with black tie just "feels/looks off" to me. Maybe because it lessens the right-left balance in an outfit that is otherwise free from distractions/patterns. Maybe it's the visual weight of the double cuff + cuff link that I wear with a black tie. (I don't have a single-cuff black-tie shirt) I don't have a great reason other than to say that it's a personal preference, not adherence to a "rule."
