One thing to note with PF2e bonuses, they don't just improve your chance to hit - they improve your chance to crit too! In your example at the end, if you have a +3 to hit and the opponent has a -4 to AC, that's not just a +7 difference, that's 7/20 more chances that you could get a critical hit with all of the extra damage and bonuses effects that come with it. Edit: Oh and Curse of Lost TIme is a level 3 spell that can be cast on an item to give it the Shoddy condition, which incurs a -2 Item penalty. Of course, you could also cast it on the creature to give it Enfeebled 1 and Clumsy 1, but that's a -1 Status penalty. You could apply Shoddy to their armour for -2 to AC, or to their weapon for -2 to attack.

Standing up from prone can trigger an Attack of Opportunity to a Fighter or any Martial who has that Feat. So, although the target in question is already Flat Footed and being prone is still Flat Footed, standing up from prone could trigger an additional attack or two.

Just wanted to add re: recall knowledge/making sure you target the right save, it is especially important in pathfinder 2e since spellcasters are more balanced. In some other systems, spellcasters just do more damage than martials anyways so it won’t matter as much. However I believe spellcasters in pf2e are balanced around being able to target those lower saves, which I believe is why the designers made it so they don’t really get item bonuses to spell attacks and dc’s (they also just get legendary proficiency compared to most martials who don’t, but it is still below the +2/+3 item bonus weapons get). I do see some people complain about spellcaster damage, but if you can just use a different spell and target reflex instead of fortitude, the monster might have a modifier which is 3 or 4 less, which increases your chances of them crit failing by 15-20%.

@@KnightsofLastCall If you invest heavily into int and lore or even the recall knowledge skill specifically, your build is entirely made redundant by a player with more metagame knowledge than you. Player knowledge supplementing character knowledge largely makes the int skill worthless, not just in combat either. If int doesn't inform your characters knowledge then why have charisma to inform your characters social abilities. Just let the players use their natural charisma as well.

@@josephjoebrown11 Despite this video being over a year old -- we were having a very long discussion about this same concept just last night in our Patreon discord. There is no easy answer - you want to make playing the game rewarding; but at the same time you have this differentiation between player skill vs. character ability. How then (for example) to handle a player who has a Fighter character (a character that is likely very wise about combat), but who's player is terrible at miniature tactical games? Would you let them make a check to have you the GM "make the best action for me" because my CHARACTER would know what to do in a fight?

Great video! One minor expansion on Tim's comments re: Wild Shape. The Wild Shape Focus spell actually says that you can choose to use your own unarmed attack bonus rather than the static bonus granted by the battle form spell, and that if you do, you also get a +2 status bonus to attack rolls. So a druid who boosts STR can do this and use handwraps of mighty blows to get an item bonus to attack rolls (as well as a status bonus from Wild Shape). Common consensus seems to be that any striking runes on handwraps don't apply though.
@KnightsofLastCall
@KnightsofLastCall 3 года назад
That’s a good point; it does seem like striking runes May work though? The extra dice of damage aren’t specifically status or item or circumstance bonus are they?
@dylan2906
@dylan2906 3 года назад
@@KnightsofLastCall Yeah it is sort of unclear. Most people I’ve read come down on striking runes not applying since they say to increase the number of damage dice TO a certain amount rather than BY a certain amount, and the number of damage dice already scales with higher levels of battle form spells.
@kevinbarnard355
@kevinbarnard355 2 года назад
Just to clarify, you can only chose to use your own unarmed attack bonus (including hand wraps) if it is higher than the battle form's listed attack bonus prior to the wild shape +2 status bonus. You can't chose to use it if it's equal to or lower than the battle form, even if that status bonus would make it higher after it's applied. I just went over the numbers going up to level 11, and only at level 4 with +1 hand wraps will a STR focused druid get to use the +2 status bonus and their own modifier without a dedication granting higher proficiency. What that does is brings you in line with the 3rd level spell slot version 1 character level early. It seems like the purpose of that feature is to allow Druids who use lower level Forms to maintain their attack/skill modifier when going beyond its heighten limit. The first time it comes into play is at level 11 if you are still using Animal Form. It keeps the modifier equal to a 6th level Form spell (attack mod of 23) even though it stops at 18 for the Animal Form.
@kevinbarnard355
@kevinbarnard355 2 года назад
@@dlpatri Yeah, it seems that way, but it's exactly what Mark Seifter said when asked about Battle Forms. Polymorphing uses those words specifically "if your unarmed attack modifier is higher..." Perhaps I wasn't clear though with the second paragraph. If you chose to use Animal Form, it stops gaining improvements for heightening when a 5th level spell. If you were level 11 and using Wild Shape as a 6th level spell, you wouldn't get any improvement to your attack modifier without using your own unarmed attack modifier and the +2 status bonus. That seems to be the purpose of the "use your own modifier" option. You can use an animal form capped at 5th level spell effects, and still go up in attack modifier which will keep pace with the 6th level spell effect forms like Elemental Form.
@kevinbarnard355
@kevinbarnard355 2 года назад
@@dlpatri Of course you can still use Animal Form even when Wild Shape is a 6th level spell. If you don't take any other battle form feats, you have no choice. Pest form and Animal Form are all you get.

Guys, awesome stuff again! How about optimizing different skills for initiative? Typically your first round is you most important one, so to maximize the odds that you go first, AND to find creative means to roleplay encounters in different ways, this is a small tip that can roll 10-20% higher on those rolls. Example: I played an AP with a lot of doors, and we would breach rooms R6 Siege style, and use my barbarians athletics to roll initiative instead of perception. The flexibility of this is pretty empowering at the table

Is not only not fun, but also in some situations doesn't make any sense. Like the configuration of one enemy surrounded by 4 PCs, and still not flanked because no one is in actual opposite sides. @johnathansanford8206
@johnathansanford8206 3 года назад
@ I'd have to say I view it and experienced it in the opposite. Due the the mechanics heavy playstyle of PF, if you don't optimise how you play in every reguard, you can only be viewed as purposefully suboptimising, whether that's the actions you take or the items you choose, or race and class and spells. PF is so meta prone, it's infuriating.
@lilifoliaenvt
@lilifoliaenvt 2 года назад
@@johnathansanford8206 I think what you're actually saying is that you need to optimize how you play, rather than optimizing your build. PF2 has minimal build optimization opportunities, which is a byproduct of the tight math and prevents players from falling behind their party just for being new. But optimizing your playstyle isn't something unique to PF2 - working as a team, abusing action economy against bosses, making debuffing a group effort, making sure you have ways to target different defenses, and trying to identify the enemy's weaknesses are all general tips that can apply to most systems. The difference in PF2 is that, unlike many other systems, you can't optimize your build to the point that your tactics and strategy in combat don't matter. This can be jarring if you're coming from a system like 5e, where if you know how to combine different elements together and multiclass effectively you can optimize to the point that you won't need to think about your combat tactics as much. The games put emphasis on different pieces of the puzzle, so going from one to the other is bound to be a little disorienting.

@@johnathansanford8206 That is true. People who enjoy wargaming should play different games from people who do not. If you want fights to be easy or hard based solely on what the DM throws at you, and you want those fights to go fast and all be the same so you can get back to the roleplaying, you should play 5e. If you want fights to require tactical thinking to make them easier, and your roleplaying is partly *about* how your character fights, then you should play a game like PF2 or 4E. If you like the "deckbuilding" game of building a super-optimized character and then wiping the floor with the bad guys, then PF1 or 3.5 is probably the best choice.

One of the things that I actually really do not like about second edition is the fact that it emphasizes movement so much… I always like my gaming to be a little bit realistic I was both a golden glove boxer and competed in Olympic style taekwondo… I have a lot of experience at fighting people at least unarmed… No let me tell you even though there might be some food work to help you cut angles on your opponent is no such thing as moving in and moving out OK that’s just doesn’t work in real fine if you expect to win… If you’re going to achieve a knock out a submission or carry this to the next logical conclusion if you expect to kill your opponent like you would in Pathfinder… You’re not going to do it at a distance you’re going to do it face-to-face… Mike Tyson was fantastic one of the very best… In his prime… Head movement avoiding getting hit in the head but every Single knockout was when he was face-to-face with his opponents because that’s the way it works in reality… And if you are thinking about a fantasy game where you’re trying to kill your opponent it’s going to be the same way you have to be face-to-face at least within range of your weapon… So much of the second edition is built on the premise of zipping in and zipping out after you do one attack… I personally prefer standing Toe to toe. But the game is no longer fun for me because I can’t do that and I resent the fact that I can’t do that because it’s a hell of a lot more realistic than the way the game is set up to be played right now… If you’re not using a weapon with reach or moving in attacking once and moving out attacking and moving out My referee goes out of his way of penalizing me every time I try to basically go to to toe with my opponent… He has an absolutely stuck in his head that you can’t play this game unless you’re dancing around like a goddamn ballerina… And I fucking hate it but it seems to be the way the game is set up and I hate that. Rant over This game was designed by people that I’ve never actually had a real fight in their life… And it shows
