People hate on that missed layup the year later but forget the tip jam that year or how about the shot he hit in game 5 against the Pacers in 1995. Ewing is my favorite center ever. He played with heart.
Thank you for the upload LD42......Patrick Ewing was and still is my favorite B-Ball player. A well deserve top 50 of the NBA greatest players and top 10 Centers in NBA history.
Ewing was my favorite player. Watching this video and others about Ewing highlights proves why the knicks of today need to bring him back. The next step is to get Jerome Jordan, and put him under Ewing's training. Jordan can ball, but with Ewing being his teacher to help him tighten up his game while adding new moves to his repertoire, Jordan will be unstoppable. The fact that both Ewing and Jordan are Jamaican would further help with Jordan's development because their shared background would give them a good rapport with one another. I don't know why the knicks have not figured this out yet. Jordan also led the d-league and is 26 or 27 years old.
That image of Patrick hugging the fan is why Knicks fans including myself loved him so much too bad it didn't end well and he never got his much deserved ring
I used to think Patrick Ewing was overrated. The whipping boy of the Golden Age of NBA Centers. Then I watched this video. Wow... Mr. Ewing could ball. I still don't place him on the top of my list, but I have a much larger sense of respect for him. Solid skill set and strong physique. Tough competitor, too...
Patrick Ewing Is My Dads Favorite Player N After Watching This U Really Appreciate What Type Of Player Ewing Was N It's Messed Up He Didn't Get A Ring But In My Book He Is One Of Best Centers Of All Time
May never have been the best C in the league, and may have a theory around him proving teams played better without him but he stepped up here when it counted.
The Run N Gun Denver Nuggets, mid to late 80's Mavs, mid to late 80's Jazz, the Twin Tower-led Rockets, the late 80's Sonics, Dr. J's Sixers (you know they won it in 83 right?) & Milwaukee Bucks led by Sidney Moncrief just to name a few were all relevant. Most of those teams never won but they were all great. L.A., Boston, Detroit & Philly were just too much for them.
Ewing was never surrounded with the talent to beat a team like the Bulls who had Jordan, Pippen and the underrated Grant (and later on Rodman). The one year a still great Ewing had talent was 1997 when the Knicks got Houston and LJ,,,and had Starks as the 6th man. Unfortunately, the suspensions vs Miami cost us a Knicks-Bulls conference finals. Ewing broke his wrist the following season and wasnt the same again.
This was a great moment for NYC basketball but was sad that the Knicks didn't close it out in the finals after being up 3-2. I think that Ewing had the ability and the teammates he played with should've won at least 2 championships instead of 0. That will always be hung over his head that with all his accomplishments in his career that he never won a title instead joining the club that had Jordan, Magic, Bird, Dr. J etc., he's in the no rings club with Malone & Stockton, Miller & Barkley,
Ewing did eveyrthing possible to bring a trophy to the knicks..but knick managment didnt bother to put talent around him -his first 6 yrs he played with ken bannister eddie lee wilkins kenny walker among others..finally when riley arrive he assemble a squad built on toughness and heart despite the limited talent ..starks mason were picked up off the d-league squads..it wasnt until the free agent frenzy of 96` that management decided to bring in some talent to help him..houston larry johnson..but by then his knees were bad ..and he could not challenge every shot in the lane..knick management by this time had let riley go to miami- blew three 1st round pick in the 96 draft they drafted john wallace- and two other scrubs which later they traded to boston for chris mills.they same draft that had kobe steve nash and ray allen and marcus camby amongst others..they couldve traded into the top ten and drafted one of the guys but they stood still and did nothing..instead of signing a marquee point guard in 96 (payton of seattle) they sign chirs childs.. in 99 they bought in sprewell and camby mason and oakley were gone along with starks..basically the last link of their identity..managment in 2000 drafted frderick weisz over ron artest..in 2002 they traded camby mark jackson and a first rd pick to denver for antonio mcdyess.who blew his knee in preseason game and never played again for the knicks!! management couldnt deliver the title ..not Ewng!!!
Word! That's what I been saying for years. He wasn't the best center ever, but damn if he played with another HOF player say Bernard King, prob would gotten at least 3.
Well if he had the 99 roster in the 94 Finals, the Knicks would have beaten the Rockets for sure. Sprewell or Houston would not go 2 for 17 or 18 like Starks did
@hangtime23ful are u kidding!!!!!!!!!!!! Jordan had George Gervin and Charles Oakley. First off magic made worthy into a hall of famer, and bird did so with parish and mchale. also what i meant was they 80's where only dominated by Detroit Boston and LA. like the 90's where dominated by Chicago, because no one else had a team good enough to beat them. If jordan is truly the G.O.A.T He would have won in the 80's
i agree. thats why i feel like the late 90s wasnt the "goldent age" of basketball if anything it was from the mid 80s to the mid 90s that consisted of the golden age of basketball players. if the late 90s was as competitve as the golden period, mj might have not gotten his 6th ring. competition wasnt that fierce
robinson was a better defender and ran the floor better but was not a great halfcourt offensive player, that's why he never did much in the playoffs when it becomes a halfcourt game, ewing was a better shooter and better with his back to the basket, no question
@BigTimePride how can you say that ? Ewing had a complete game, whereas howard can't even hit baby hooks consistently yet. Ewing was actually a great jump shooter , making him have a complete package starting from around the free throw line and down. He was the anchor of the Knicks defense, which was stifling to say the least. And unlike Howard, he could hit free throws, sure not a great free point shooter, but solid enough. Barring winning the finals, Ewing was a lot better than robinson.
Your question was 'who else was relevant' during that decade? I'll give you Seattle but the '88 Jazz were better than the '97 or '98 version & the '86 Rockets would give the '95 squad some problems due to the big man duo of young Hakeem & Sampson. To me they were clearly better than the '94 version seeing as how that team only had 1 All-Star surrounded by role players.
Ewing played great n a playoff game that proves pat was better and or more clutch than a soft player like miller who never dominated ewing in a deciding conference finals game except when ewing was slowed by injuries and millers 34 pts in 06 2000 was when ewing was older and did not outweigh Ewing's 24 pts 22 reg 5 blks 7 assets especially when Patrick had to play vs Reggie in his prime one point I'm making is Patrick had the better competition
@hangtime23ful i have to admit the cavs/knicks could never beat jordan it just they have the jordan curse. the blazers were a good team but no good enough. the lakers didnt really need to win, magic was going to retire right after the finals were over. I think Danny Ainge just could not guard Jordan otherwise the suns would have definitely won.
@hangtime23ful ??? Bird put up a way better individual performance against them than Jordan ever did. That is a fact, and has nothing to do with team success. Jordan played in a more ball dominant system and had a chance to accumulate pad his stats better, but still couldn't outdo Bird
The Rockets series does suck. I think that series just came down to Houston having Game 7 in their place, Starks going ice cold in Game 7 (and Riley not pulling him), and Hakeem just being better then Ewing at that time.
+hitek9wittafulclip "Way better"? No. He was more skilled than Ewing was but his game always dropped off in the postseason. He didn't have one performance that could compare to this video.
The '88 Jazz & '86 Rockets lost to two of the greatest teams of all-time. In '95 (not '96) the Rockets swept a very young Orlando Magic team led by 22-year-old Shaq. The Jazz were great from 1996-98 but Stockton & Malone weren't as dominant as their '88 versions. The supporting cast in '88 that consisted of players like Mark Eaton & Thurl Bailey was also better than what they had in the late 90's.
The Knicks Need To Retire #14 For Anthony Mason (R.I.P.). The Portland Trail Blazers Did It For Jerome Kersey When He Passed. The Knicks Should Do The Same For Mason.
@hangtime23ful first of all jordan could never win in the era that mattered--------------------------- the 80's, which bird an magic did but no only that but they had people who could beat them. Unlike the the bulls where all the best teams left in the 90's
Game 7 Eastern Semifinals a year later, EWING CHOKED! One of the 50 greatest NOT! One of the three best Knicks? NOT! Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley, and Dave DeBusschere were all more worthy of that title over this over rated BUM!
That "over rated bum" is also a Hall of Famer and easily in the the top 3 greatest Knicks in history. How you gonna fault all those years of magnificence for one mistake? Hating at its finest....
DjWindmaster97 Top 3 NOT! Try Reed, Frazier, Monroe, DeBusschere, and Bradley for starters! Any one of them worthy of being called MR. KNICK! Review highlights of these guys before you tell me how great Ewing was. Ewing also had no discipline, leaving the bench at the end of Game 5 against Miami in '97 when they were up 3-1! His suspension resulted in the Knicks losing that series!
***** You seem to have some sort of beef with Ewing, did he take your spot in the NBA? I agree he is overrated, but you do realize everyone you listed played with one another, they had each other to play off, Ewing (as Barkley has said before) probably played with the least amount of talent than anyone from that era, and still is a HoFamer, top 50 (don't deny that, even Bill Simmons who hates Ewing placed him like 39th) and top three Knick of all time. You don't place Parish ahead of Pierce for being the third man on three title teams, Pierce was the main guy for one, same with Ewing, yes he never won but he was also the first option for like 16 years, DeBusschere wasn't, Bradley wasn't, Monroe wasn't.
***** Dominant big men slam the ball home. How many times did he take some timid outside shot. After ten seasons of his timidness, I gave up on him! Did you notice how he was booed off the floor after that game in '95!
Hope you are not a Knicks fan because the rest of us would love to have that overrated bum at least getting us to The Finals. Since that bum left how many playoff series have they won?
