For people who have wrong assumptions, listen.. just like Patrick was assumed someone else.. Paul Allen was assumed too.. listen he never mentions the name, even when he gives his card. Look closely in the beginning, paul Allen is introduced in the restaurant as in the table behind.. you can see clearly that it's not Jared as Paul Allen. Killing the girls were cleared out by housing owners.. but everything makes him realize he's mad, but he's not

At the beginning of American Psycho we are exposed to the idea that nobody knows who the hell anyone else is, and this mistaken identity theme plays a large role throughout the film. Bateman thinks he knows who Paul Allen is, but the Paul Allen identified by Bateman in the opening restaurant scene is definitely not Jared Leto’s Paul Allen. Bateman tells us Allen has mistaken him for Marcus Halberstran, who looks exactly like Bateman, but are we supposed to believe a psychopath in a company where everyone seems to go with the identity flow? After all Bateman doesn’t correct Allen when he calls him Halberstran, so why would “Allen” correct Bateman if he is not truly Paul Allen. When Paul Allen hands his business card off to Timothy Bryce, we the audience cannot see the name on the card, who knows what card was handed over to Bryce. These are businessmen, constantly exchanging cards throughout the day, judging from how much pride they take in their business card, what if Bryce happened to have a copy of Allen’s card on hand, but it was not the same card he received from Leto? If Allen is as successful as everyone in the film makes him out to be, why would someone not want to assume his identity? After all it gets them unlimited reservations at Dorsia.

For those who did not watch the movie, this is an associate of Paul Allen and in the movie Patrick Bateman cleaves Paul Allen’s head off with an axe than goes on a killing spree only to realize that none of that ever happened and he was hallucinating the entire time meaning he is completely and utterly insane. I find that the most beautiful movies are those told through the eyes of an unreliable narrator.

I always thought Paul Allen was one of the few people he actually did kill, but because nobody in Bateman’s circle can tell who’s who, the associate only thought he was with Paul Allen. Likewise, the lady who owns Paul Allen’s apartment was acting weird because she knew something bad happened, she just didn’t want to risk lowering the property value.
@Styxied

People have theorised that the deaths were imaginary, but I feel that takes away from the movie. I believe the point is that everyone is so blinded by their rich habits that no one cared enough or was focused enough on the murders. If Paul Allen wasn’t murdered, the detective wouldn’t be on his case, and to call that a hallucination would also be calling his receptionist a hallucination, for she had alerted gate,an of his presence throughout the movie.

 I watched this for the first time about 3 years ago and it took me until very recently to think of this, the idea of all the murders being in his head is an easy to understand idea and the most obvious BUT an alternative way of of looking at this would be like so: Patrick did commit all of the murders (or at least some of them) but it was in other peoples interest for them to be covered up, for example in this scene what’s actually happening here, a man is confessing crimes too his own lawyer and what are lawyers supposed to do? Protect their clients. By creating the doubt in Patrick’s mind, even he is now questioning whether or not he’s guilty. In addition too this there’s the scene where the real estate woman says ‘ there was no listing in the paper, I think you should leave ‘ to me now it’s obvious that there were in fact bodies kept there that the real estate agent had to dispose of and keep covered up in order to not allow the value of the property diminish It’s just a different way of looking at the film, sure everything could’ve been in his head, but what if it wasn’t and everyone’s own self interests covered up his guilt Let me know what you think !

If you remember at the beginning of the movie, Patrick says the man on the other side of the room is Paul Allen who isn’t the same actor as Jared Leto. The guy he killed might’ve actually been someone else but then again the detective says he’s investigating the disappearance of Paul Allen. This could all be a combination of mistaken identity and delusion.

For those who wonder, my personal opinion is that the movie is about the life of high society, stupidly rich people who are above the law and can't be caught even if they try to. I think Patrick did those murders but the movie wants to tell you that people like him can't be touched. Every one in his circle cover him so effortlessly that even himself is in disbelief.

The whole point of the movie was that everybody is just as greedy and money hungry as one another that they don’t ever lift their heads up to notice anything else. Like there’s no such thing as “standing out”. The end was meant to be interpreted by the viewer, and it’s your decision wether or not to decide if the murder actually happened and the associate was just mistaking Paul Allen with someone else (which happens a lot in the movie), or if it was all in Batsmen’s head.
@randomuploader2276
@randomuploader2276 Год назад
I believe that Paul Allen is dead, his lawyer did his job and covered up the whole thing in a matter of a day (which also explains how Paul's apartment is completely clean) and since Patrick and his lawyer are in a public space so he pretends he doesn't know what he's talking about.
@kingsukhghosh8021
@kingsukhghosh8021 Год назад
So this scene has two meanings as it's upto you how you want to contemplate. Scenario 1- Patrick was hallucinating the whole time. He dreamt of killing and torturing people when in reality he did nothing. He was just hallucinating his dreams and psychotic wants. Scenario 2-Patrick did kill Paul and the other characters. But in their level they do not remember each other personally. They only remember by the qualifications and possessions they own. So Paul Allen is already dead, but he mistook someone else with him because of the same possession or character the other person had

Even if his dad is a powerful person, Paul Allen was no small fry either, plus how many people he killed in the street that too police officers. No amount of influence could have saved him. Killing some homeless people and getting away Scott free was another thing but the other killings I don't think he could get away Scott free with all that without appearing in the court is impossible.

People completely misunderstood this book and movie if they think he didn't kill Paul Allen in my opinion. The whole book is a critique of the yuppie wall street 80s lifestyle, where all the brokers lived, looked and acted so similar to eachother they were almost undistinguishable. People saying they saw Paul Allen even though Patrick killed him are doing this because they cannot even distinguish between their friends and associates

Bateman elaborates on it himself in the final shot of the movie, but essentially he has come to the realization that despite confessing to all of his crimes, to for the first time in his life baring his internal soul to a superficial world, it has all meant nothing. Who he is, what he has done, neither are important in a world that cares only about outward aesthetic, about maintaining appearances. “What’s inside doesn’t matter… this confession has meant nothing.”

People who say he was hallucinating are wrong. The point of the movie was to criticize both corporatism and the ability for rich white people (especially men) to get away with everything (especially during the era of Reaganomics). Patrick is depicted as a psychopath but this ending shows the others are exactly like him. See how he tries to be different and better with his boring white business cards for example. It's absolutely insane that you would flex that when it makes you no different than anyone else in Wall Street. The ending shows that those people are apathetic monsters. For example, the apartment owners wouldn't dare risk lowering their value by reporting the dead bodies. Instead, they owners hid them and refused to comment on their existence. The agent simply told Patrick to leave. Paul Allen isn't alive, but a strawman version of him continues to exist to keep things "normal". It doesn't matter if people die, as long as their operations continue running smoothly.
