Big Buddha and Wat Pra Yai (Temple) are located at the top of Pratamnak Hill in the south between Pattaya and Jomtien giving you a breathtaking view of Pattaya and its surroundings. Its construction is grand.
The Great Buddha is extremely popular with tour groups who like to see the intricate design of the statue and the temple, but it is also revered by local people who come to pray at the temple bringing as offerings wreaths of flowers and incense sticks that we burn creating an atmosphere of contemplation.
How to get there
To access it, a long staircase adorned with two gold-colored Naga snakes will take you to the huge golden statue built in 1977.
Surrounding Big Buddha, you will find the 7 smaller sized Buddhas representing the birth days.
There are seven (as you'd expect) that represent the days of the week (standing, sitting, or lying down).
The Buddha of your particular day will have a significance which is stated below.
Seek the Buddha of your day, and donate to the Buddha of your birth.
Monday Buddha is said to bring you peace.
Tuesday's Buddha will relieve you with a peaceful sleep, and is normally found in the reclining position.
Buddha Wednesday is to celebrate the fact that you are a kind, giving person.
Thursday Buddha gives you the peace of mind to allow you to meditate.
Friday Buddha means you will get happiness.
Saturday Buddha will keep you safe and protect you from the elements of nature.
Sunday Buddha will ensure that the needy are found and cared for.
In addition to the Big Buddha area at the top of the hill, there is an interesting Chinese-style Temple and a garden a little lower down, which should not be missed, but it is often, especially for tourists via the 'coach. You will have passed it on the left side towards Big Buddha.
After your visit
Once down at the Phra Tamnak intersection, I invite you to take the road that climbs on the right to get to the Pattaya view point where you will have a breathtaking view of the entire bay of Pattaya as well as the city.
