Appreciate your video, but I have worked with 4 different graders in NYC. I would urge new designers to steer clear of both quality patterns and create-a-marker. They are the go for many, because they've been around for a long time and have the budget for marketing, but their work is riddled with mistakes. I believe they take on more work than they have the capacity to handle, so the quality is only good if you're a long-time, repeat customer. On a personal level, Paul, who runs CAM, is super nice and so is his staff. Mario from QP demeaned his staff in front of me, so I wouldn't go back there even if his work was good. Can't respect someone who demeans people that can't do anything for him.

oh wow! sorry to hear about that. it’s good that you’re sharing your experience! what are the other graders you recommend?
@wildkims2008
@wildkims2008 2 года назад
@@nataliadedios no worries! For new designers, I recommend Fine Line Studios. It’s not as high volume as the other two, but everyone there actually seems to be happy working there & Han (the owner) is very supportive of new designers & will patiently educate you if needed. However, I always recommend to check your patterns, because all of these graders are capable of mistakes, but you want someone who will own up to it and fix it without charging you. I consider myself experienced enough to review my order & catch mistakes, but I weep for people who have no way of knowing they’re walking away with shoddy work that could affect the fit. With a smaller company like Fine Line Studios, you could ask him to unroll and look over your PRINTED patterns to make sure everything is okay.

Hi Natalia, this video is literally what I needed. It's so helpful to those of us starting our own businesses and making our own patterns. I am going to be making my own patterns for my line (design grad), but I'm a little confused about the process after I create the pattern. I also need to save money so it's not in my budget to outsource everything. I have some questions, if you don't mind answering: 1. Did you create and sew your own samples and prototype? 2. Is it standard to give them a paper pattern (i.e. grid pattern paper as opposed to manila) 3. Was the cost they charged you per size? 4. Did you make samples for each graded size after you received the pattern? Thank you :)
@nataliadedios
@nataliadedios 4 года назад
I’m happy that you found this helpful! to answer your questions: 1. yes, I created my own pattern and sewed the sample and prototype on my own (saved a lot of money!). 2. Yes to the paper pattern, they have to tape the pieces onto a large board so they can scan it! Although I think you can bring slopers to be graded as well- I did see oak tag slopers there as well. I would email the grading company to double check! 3. Yes, the cost is per size! The more sizes you get the more expensive it is. they charge for grading each size $20 per size, then creating markers (the digital layout) per each size $20 each, then they charge for printing the marker (the large roll of paper I was holding), the 3 sizes printed came to $15! I also got in a pdf conversion so that was an extra $15. 4. I did cut out the size Large jacket and sewed it in muslin, it was a good size! The industry standard grade is about 2”

Super enjoyable! Please excuse the question but isnt it cheaper to make the grading by yourself since you made your own pattern? I don't mean to be rude. Thanks so much for the video.
@nataliadedios
@nataliadedios 4 года назад
good question! pattern grading / sizing is completely different than pattern making. I could make the pattern larger by letting out the seams here and there but it’s just not the same as having an industry professional with a technical design background size the pattern to industry standards. Also, you are paying for the layout of the patterns on the marker according to your fabric width (the marker is the large sheet of paper with the patterns on it)! In production, you have to have as little fabric waste as possible in your pattern otherwise your fabric costs will be higher. If you plan on doing a custom, one off piece, then it makes sense to just slightly adjust the pattern for that 1 customer! but if you plan on going into production, I recommend this service!!

Do you need 2 patterns for straight sizes vs plus sizes?

I’m like 99% sure you need two patterns! because you need two separate fit models for the garment

How do you know where to mark your notches on the pattern?
@nataliadedios
@nataliadedios 4 года назад
notches will be placed on key points on your pattern to help match up the pieces! for example: I put a center back notch on the back yoke and a center back notch on the collar you should also put notches on curved pieces, to help match them up while sewing! I put notches on my seam allowances as well
