This is going to be so nice for easily creating seamless textures for 3d work.

IKR? I've been waiting for them to add something equivalent to Krita's realtime texture wrap mode for like YEARS. Was so stoked when they finally added this feature.

I congratulate you for the new tutorials where the image of the person who is explaining does not appear, since this image distracts and covers part of the program's interface. Congratulations!

What is the recommended workflow for those who would like to use vector shapes or curves to build a Pattern Layer? Can one layout vector objects in a layer group, then rasterize a copy before pasting into the Pattern Layer? Can one merge down a rasterized vector design?

Thanks for the tutorial but honestly there are so many problems with doing pattern like this. Firstly all of these techniques are very imprecise. For instance, how can i make sure I make the dot or brushstrokes exactly in the middle of the canvas? Why can't we use vector shapes with patterns that we could center and line up perfectly and also have infinite resolution in the pattern? Then the symmetry grid does not snap to any guides. How can i make sure it's actually in dead centre? There’s also no reset button to do that. It also won’t subject to undo/redo commands should I happen to grab the handle accidentally and rotate or nudget out of place.

Can you save those "pattern layers" as assets in a library? Or do you have to recreate them from scratch every time?
@JamesRitson
@JamesRitson Год назад
You certainly can! I will likely incorporate it into a tutorial on Assets in the future…

Small complaint. If you're going to teach about a tool, then please explain all the sub-tools within it. I've seen you do this in other tutorials too. In this case, you turned on the stabilizer and rope without any explanation. Otherwise, I'm amazed at this. Not sure I'll ever use it though. 😁
@Jeff-2112
@Jeff-2112 Год назад
I think they did that because the stabilizer options are not unique to the pattern layers. Stabilizers are available on many of the tools in the Affinity products. I think they were trying to keep the videos short and to the point. There are definitely many videos out there that cover the stabilizers. It can get overwhelming when seeing options you aren't familiar with, so I do understand where you're coming from.

So, I'm a stickler for complete information too. However, I think if they included a complete explanation for every ancillary tool they use, the videos would get bored down in details. Therefore, I think the best solution is for them to provide links to other videos about ancillary topics in the description.... AND mention that in the videos. Unfortunately, that requires that they have made ALL those ancillary videos first. And that rarely happens. It requires lots of additional planning.
@harvardkarbodie
@harvardkarbodie Год назад
@@GrantSR I didn't realize it's ancillary, or rather as Jeff says above, that it's used for other tools too! My bad. I'm a thirty year user of Photoshop but stopped upgrading even before the subscription service started. I just bought Affinity 2. It's terrific. But if I had to describe it in a few words it would be "too much information". I expected it to have more than I need, but didn't expect so much of it. Just the same, thanks to these tutorials I'm starting to use things I've never used before, such as a high pass filter for sharpening. I'm still getting used to the idea of "non-destructive" layers, but I've quickly realized how useful it is. Now I need to go figure out what a stabilizer and rope is. :o)

@@harvardkarbodie I was a long time PS user as well but switched when the Affinity products when beta for Windows. So many things are similar to PS but there is enough that is different that it will take some time to get used to the new workflows. The stabilizer and rope options are just ways to stabilize your movements to help smooth out your mouse or pen movements. If you do some RU-vid searches there will be a few videos that talk about those features.

Brilliant, but "roughly the same shape as the billboard?" We want to know the exact shape i.e. aspect ratio. Please, can we have a proper perspective crop tool as in Photoshop and Photopea 🙂

Maybe have a look at the vector flood fill tool workflow video for Designer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ekMotILwS70.html It’s a different layer type (vector instead of raster) but it’s now incredibly easy to texture objects and vector plans. Pattern layers can also be stored as assets and easily re-used by dragging them into a document, which may be worth having a look at too. Hope the above helps!
