I've always said that her and Whitney, and I could never judge between the two of them, who could sing the best, I know we all know Patty has a five-octave range, and don't need a mic,and doesn't have even 10% of the knowledgement she should have, she got her first Grammy in 1992, she had been in the music business by then for over 30 years, and she has two Grammys to this day, why Aretha has like 20, and Diana Ross has a lot, now I'm not saying Aretha shouldn't have the ones that she have, but I will never understand why Doo de-doo Patti LaBelle that way, no one can argue that Diana Ross has a better singer than Patti LaBelle, and her shows are always so completely out,and people talk about how much her audience lovebird, and she gets old one on one with the audience, which is true, but at all those people that bought those tickets, I often wonder why when they buy the album, because she is never sold 10 million albums, on one album meaning, and I think at all the album see record it, all the way back to the bluebells, to Labelle, to her solo career, I think only her album Burin, I'm in love again, Flame, maybe Gems, and three live albums are the only ones that ever went platinum, so this was basically all in the 90s, because Burnin was the one that gave her her first Grammy in 92, which is a damn shame, she's been nominated 10 times,but can only get to Grammy's, and she's never had a show there wasn't sold out that's what I don't understand, like it she has that many fans, then why the hell are they buying the albums, the only hit they had when she was in the group LaBelle, was their first album night birds, but this song Lady Marmalade, but no awards whatsoever, and no platinum albums at all, that's just a downright disgrace to me, that's why when I see people compliment her so, I really just want to cuss em some out,but I don't know which ones are the real fans, and which ones are not, so I can't, I'm a die-hard Patti LaBelle fan, and Whitney Houston things, but at least I have all of the albums, I'm 37, so I started with Patti LaBelle probably at 13, and for Christmas,I got her don't block the blessings autobiography, her greatest Hits CD, Patti LaBelle live in New York CD, her Flame album which was the best album in the world to me, and with Whitney, I think I started with The bodyguard, I have that, of course waiting to exhale soundtrack to, her 98 My Love Is your Love album, just Whitney, which is very underrated, I have both her and Patti LaBelle's Christmas, and I have Whitney's I look to You album, which was fantastic,and her preacher's wife album, that was the best gospel music sung that I've ever heard and I grew up in the COGIC Church, of course I have her greatest hits Album.
@@charlesjeffery1155 Well you have so many valid points. Patti was and still is in the game; and has outlasted so many. I do believe we have the Tortoise and the Hare some of these artists struggle there whole career and have to hustle and some have abundance but get involved in addictive activities which cost them dearly. a lot of this phenomenon between the Divas is marketing. At the end of the day it is who moves Your soul and it sounds to me as if you have picked the best to do the job!!!!
The way she request to turn up the volume of her mic at 1:06 - 1:08 only shows how professional she was. I guess her audience didn't notice that as while she was singing.
I don’t get folks. At the end of the day, it is to each their own. Yet Beyoncé or Diana Ross can get millions of views while Patti truthfully sings and I don’t see the million of deserved views. This is exactly why I prefer the underdog over the popular chick any day and every day!

Vocalzz Range Yes I know that Whitney has had her problems and sounded bad on performances at the end but the point is I wouldn’t take a bad sounding note and brag about it. I enjoy tons of performances by Patti LaBelle but this particular note didn’t sound good to me. So you don’t need to be a drama queen and start bashing Whitney and Aretha. Have a nice day.

I remember when this aired. This was a TRIBUTE to Michael, he was given one of the Artist of the Year Awards he has been getting that year. This was The Soul Train Music Awards, I do believe and Mama Patti was one of the hosts... Dionne Warwick sang, "Man in the Mirror" on this show as well. Michael was sitting in the front row!! In fact, he ADORED this performance. There is another tribute Mama Patti did for him with Darryl Coley.....that is up on RU-vid as well.

Darrick Long you are very stupid. Patti was not born to live the life that you failed to live for yourself. She has been in the game singing her heart out for many decades. An ingrate like you will never appreciate even if she cut off her vocal cord and hand it over to you
no ability to sing a melodic line. either she rushed the whole line at the end of the phrase or screamed over it. the singing through the nose and the near-yodeling is as awful as the glissando. Michael Jackson is rolling in his grave.
