I had the RIDICULOUS PLEASURE of having PATTI LABELLE + PHYLLIS HYMAN on during DIVA WEEK @ BET in 1991. IT WAS SOOOOO AMAZING! THEY WERE SPECTACULAR TOGETHER! Phyllis left that day to shoot her music video for DON'T WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD, her first and only #1 SINGLE! They are both DYNAMIC DIVAS!

I was I 95 northbound leaving NC headed back to N.Y. when i heard Phyllis Hyman had passed.She was scheduled to perform with the Whispers at the Apollo.What an awesome voice.How i wish she were still here as well.Miss Patti...If Only You Knew❤❤❤❤❤

Phyllis Hyman did have one of the greatest voices ever but never got the recognition she deserved. I'm so glad Patti gave Phyllis her props. People from all walks of life love Patti because she has such a loving and free spirit. It's time to start putting petty differences aside and love people for who they are. Phyllis used to regularly come into a restaurant I worked at in Philly. It had a piano bar and she would often sing a couple of songs after the customers asked. She was very kind to me, being someone famous and I was a waiter. Lovely woman.

Greatest voice of all time. I am a 40 year old gay man and I remember thinking that Patti was my first drag queen that I loved in the early '80s when she did Motown Returns To The Apollo and then her own TV special when she sang with Luther Vandross and Cyndi Lauper. Nobody holds a duet like Patti, you see how excited she gets when other singers can get in the ring with her. She loves to share the joy of making music! Sidenote 1: Phyllis Hyman's You Know How To Love Me is one of my absolute favorite disco/funk tracks that is perfection every time I listen to it. So happy to hear Patti praise her. Sidenote 2: My husband and I walked down the aisle back in 2018 to Change's The Glow Of Love, with a lead vocal by Mr. Luther. Another perfect song. Patti has great taste in friends. And food!

you know what?...I was just watching your video with Jennifer Holliday. And during her explanation of how the gay community basically adopted her and took care of her finanically, when no one else would...beside the fact that she didnt have a record deal, it dawned on me that the one and only Patti LaBelle was yet ANOTHER living legend, who experienced the same thing, to a degree.....while Patti was still traveling the country, peforming in its best venues, it was PRIMARILY the gay community and the black community that sold those concerts out and held her up, while she waited on the best oppurtunity to make a comeback. Tho' both of them, got record deals and went on to have more recording success, there were a number of years, where both of them had fallen out of the loop so to speak, and were left to their own devices. my memories, as a fan of Patti's during those years, take me back to her last album with Epic in '81 and the few yrs she spent without a record deal, before she signed with MCA in 'late '84. And I can remember her coming to Wash/DC in '83, for "Black Gay Pride"..not the more well known "Gay Pride"...and she sang a handful of songs at the newly-built Convention Center, downtown DC. She was rockin' that asymetrical hair, that literally looked like a disc-shaped UFO. For us gay, black men...the reason we love Patti and Jennifer, the way that we do, is because we understand better than anyone how their talent has been overlooked so many times, in deference to someone else (usually white) who isnt even in the same ballpark with them, talent-wise, simply because Patti and Jennifer, are BLACK and have never apologized for being so. as great as Ethel Merman was, she did NOT have the vocal talent of Jennifer Holliday. And as awesome as Patti LaBelle has been over the course of a 60-plus year career, Celine Dion STILL isnt on her level, in my opinion. And I happen to be a Celine Dion fan. But if you compare the eras of both women, when they were in their prime...Celine, is taking SEVERAL seats and bowing down to the raw force of Patti's singing ability.

I have seen Patti in concert 8 times.

Saw Patti along with Sarah Dash and Phyllis Hyman sing with their friend Laura Nyro doing classic Motown in Santa Monica in 1971. Laura is another one died way too young .

R.I .P Phyllis Hyman gone not forgotten love that woman wish somebody could had gotten her the help she needed. Patti and Phyllis was really good friends she was full of love. I wish was still here to the world not the same without her remember last week was her birthday she is 72 years old but sadly on Friday June 30, 1995 on that afternoon Phyllis ended her life 😢 taking drug overdose wish could had got there sooner before she ended may she rest in paradise.

Patti LaBelle just can't age in voice, spirit, talent & beauty. Truly God knew she was special for us. Enjoy her while she's here.
