A cover of U2's 'Until The End Of The World' from their 1991 classic Achtung Baby. This version can be found on the cover mount CD - "AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered" on the December issue of Q Magazine in the UK
Achtung Baby is probably my favorite album of all time, not just because of the music but also the time of my life it came along in. These covers are really great and show just how great these songs really are.
i gotta say..i'm pleasantly surprised...my sister was a fan of hers and would play her albums all the time when i was only 11 yrs old,..and now , as a professional musician at 41 yrs old, i can see why she loved her so much...great version !
I truly don't understand people who says this cover ruins the song. This is one of the most beautiful songs to me, her voice is full of feelings and powerful but so natural and fragile at the same time. That's a masterpiece and you're all disappointed she can rock it better than your favorite band.
+Pauline Ashley I think that Patty has done a perfect cover. The feeling of regret and sorrow works better with the lyrics than the original version. U2 are playing the song in a more happy way, without that huge feeling of regret for losing someone you loved.
OP - how does she 'rock it better'? I love how you state it as if your opinion is fact. This isn't even the same song, it just uses the same lyrics. Not only does she add nothing, she (no hate against Patti, but this was a bad miss) strips away any musicality from it. Stripped down versions aren't inherently bad, but this was just bland and boring abysmal muttering over a few guitar plucks.
This is amazing, I think the job of a cover version is to make you NOT think of the original, apart from a vague feeling of recognition of the words. And this so does that. Incredible cover.
No no no no Patti just KILLS it genius that she is. U know Bono would bow to her and cite her as a key original influence. Bet he was beside himself hearing her do one of his... Patti is the poetess with the mostest... Wake up people glad to know some people get it... Wow
this is a cool album. I hope it has brought Achtung Baby to a new audience, especially because U2 are desperately uncool with people my age (18-26), which is really unfortunate as most of the popular bands now that my age group listens to are heavily influenced by U2.
They are not uncool. This album has 32 years....They are getting old, like me, like you. and they write as life goes by, losses, reunions, memories, things that never will be the same.....U2 doesn't compose songs. They compose life soundtracks.
agree 100%. Nothing worth making it just like the original. Take the song, turn it around, make it yours. Perfect example is Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt."
saw her at new year's eve in nyc. she blew me away with this song. brought me and her to tears. patti shows the incredible beauty of U2's lyrics (which normally i don't notice due to slick production).
U2's original, like Patti (and Fred)'s 'It Takes Time', turns up on the soundtrack to my favourite movie, 'Until the End of the World', so the connection goes back to 1992. 'UTEOTW' is here on RU-vid in the shortened 150 minute version but, trust me, the full four and a half hours is even lovelier.
Thanks for posting these. This album is available in the States for 100+ dollars. Too steep for my blood, unfortunately though I would snap it up in a heartbeat if the price came down. Good to be able to hear these tunes.
It's Patti for cryin' out loud! What's with all the miserable critiquing? It's not supposed to sound like, and it shouldn't be compared to, the original. It is simply magnificent...
Nice cover! BUT I think the soul of the original song is the electric sound and the power of the distortion. I would like to hear a cover of this one from The Verve.
Great band one of the best around Love in the work thanks for sharing this Have just recorded an acoustic U2 cover version my self check it out and let me know what you think #CN# Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #DT#
i don't know who really don't know how but i always mix this song i mean the original, with songs of garbage. in some place of my heart i was feel this song was for them.
Outstanding cover! Patti is a genius. There are only two artists who are able to record covers that are better than originals: Patti Smith and Tori Amos.
each their own I suppose...but, this song - to me - artistically contrasts two elements in conflict within the individual. The aesthetic(represented by the lyrics) and the ethical(represented by the music).elements in conflict. It's theatrically orchestrated perfectly in their 01' elevation tour(particularly Boston's show). While I have always enjoyed Smith I believe here her rendition misses the duality of the song. This interpretation feels completely empty
@muminek79 In other words you have only come accross two artist you believe can do better covers than the originals, a very shallow and close minded comment.
I love Patti Smith and U2, but I can't connect with this cover at all. Its stripped of emotion, at least moreso than Bono's, her high notes are weak. She did a great cover of Teen Spirit using a similar formula of stripped down accoustics and unusual singing quirks but it doesn't work here. Its depressing from the first minute and lacks the ambivalence of U2's version which was bitter sweat, this is just bitter.
Certainly not better than the original; don't know what kind of crack you must be on to think that. I can see it fitting nicely into an album of covers though.
