This is the most interesting video thus far on this channel because Patton Oswalt clearly knows a good deal about this case and apparently was involved in benefits and efforts for the defendants. The contextualistion of this documentary is excellent here. It's almost like Oswalt is doing a commentary not so much on the film but the case itself. An excellent video here
This is why I personally don't believe in capital punishment. I don't want my life in the hands of the state. There are countless innocent people in jail, and countless innocent people have been put to death for crimes they didn't commit. I can't imagine how it must feel to be put in that situation. The one kid was such a badass that he didn't even want to sign the paper to get out of prison because he wasn't going to sign a confession to a crime he didn't commit. He'd rather spend the rest of his life in jail than give them the satisfaction - the same kid that kept saying during the trial, "I know we didn't do it, so I wasn't afraid of going to jail." The only reason he even signed it was to get his friend out so he could see his Dad - who was sick and dying. Everybody involved in that case and trial should be so ashamed of themselves they can't sleep at night. Those kids deserve sainthood for what they went through. And this horseshit still goes on.
There's a 4th movie after they got out of prison called "West of Memphis" with a lot of people including some of the parents of the victims admitting they were wrong.
Ironically the docs made them look more guilty to me, which you'd think someone like myself that enjoys metal and is into horror films and wasn't similar to others around me (mixed kid who enjoys those things) would empathize more with them. The fact that one of the doc creators ended up marrying Echols also made the docus come across as even more biased in retrospect. Celebrities being attached to the case just didn't come across well either, why should someone believe their innocence just because celebrities took it up as their cause du jour? Over the years more and more things came out that just didn't look good for the three (more so Echols) so I've never really bought into the narrative that the docus presented (and have kept an open skeptical mind); and that's what these "documentaries" were, they had an endgame narrative and made everything revolve around that. The three could be innocent but this was more so the defense laying our their case without any rebuttal from the prosecution, so I never formed an actual opinion based on the docus.
I believed the documentary at face value when I first saw it. But in retrospect it was extremely biased and they left a lot of key things that really show their guilt. I recommend looking the case up on your own. They can be outcasts, underdogs & hated by their Christian community and also commit heinous crimes. Both can be True
@@kribke I looked it up myself and they're obviously innocent. They were victims of 'Satanic Panic'. What evidence shows their guilt? What's the smoking gun? Damien Echols did himself no favors by playing it up like a gothic edgelord, but that is not evidence of his or their guilt. They would not be free today if they were actually child killers with death sentences...even most of the parents who thought they were guilty in this documentary fought to have them freed. They tricked a mentally handicapped boy into "confessing" a crime he and 2 other boys did not do. It's shameful.
Have u ever read the court transcripts? They are 100% guilty. And I was someone who watched those docs and was incredibly moved by them. It was nothing but propaganda.
One of the great moments in one of the documentaries was when the junk science of survival knife blade impressions on the bodies of the victims was exposed. The prosecution maintained the three defendants had used a survival knife to scratch at the bodies. The defense convincingly argued that the dead kids had been bitten by turtles in the creek where they were found. The prosecution experts were terrible.
Yes, this was a great moment, for sure. "A Rebuttal of the Predation Claims" on thewm3revelations. The wounds looked nothing like something that came from turtles, one of the kids (that was mutilated) died from the wounds, the other 2 drowned. Also there was a lot of blood at the crime scene, which showed up on the luminol test. Even Peretti, who wrote the autopsy reports, argued against the turtle theory. Because it's so insane and he at least knew what turtles look like. It can't be backed up in any reasonable way, it's just "turtles did it".
@@greenneonsky No, turtles did not do it. They were killed by someone otherwise known as a human. Turtles were in the creek and they bit the bodies. They had nothing to do with how the boys died. Unfortunately any marks on flesh can be misinterpreted. The prosecution presented fantastical theories and the WM3 did not have an adequate defense which they certainly deserved as citizens but which was not provided. The interesting thing though is how the defense and prosecution can present different theories but which in fact may not be the truth. Also one must look to motive and the other rare instances where a police department allowed biases to sabotage an investigation. If you have Netflix check out American Nightmare. The Vallejo, CA, police department publicly insisted a woman faked her own kidnapping. They were completely wrong.
@@spinsandneedlesThe theories from the prosecution were not that fantastical though IMO. I thought so too, when I first heard about the case and then I started to doubt it more and more. The kid bled out, according to Peretti, he could be wrong, but if the defense had a good rebuttal, it could be shown in the retrial, when they would have some very good lawyers and experts on their side. But there was just an Alford plea. From the prosecution's side of the story it was more like a thrill kill done by 3 teenagers and Echols was the one with interest in the occult and he was also the ringleader. The more fantastical things were about him and when I looked up his work, he is an interesting person today too. Also the reason why he could be looked at in the first place can be found in Exhibit 500, his medical records. The satanic aspect is way more focused on by the media, but it was more about him having a lot of problems prior to the murders. That could be a huge bias too but they have to look into people who stand out and it's not like the police focused just on WM3, there were other people they were looking into. None of the 3 convicted had alibis, for example, they were all picked apart. Also you can read the answers Echols gave to the police (2 times he was questioned) before Misskelley confessed, on Callahan, if you haven't read it before. Just some very strange answers. Also comparing Misskelley's confessions to the crime scene and the autopsies. There are many things that are very sus for me, it's not just about the wounds. It is interesting, how 2 sides can present 2 completely different theories. Michael Peterson's case is the one I looked up before and I just didn't know what to think about it. I'm guessing that the ppl that still think they're guilty probably sat thru the entire trial, or read the court transcripts as opposed to watching a movie designed to trick u into thinking they didn't do it.

Having researched this case exhaustively for years and years, it was very clearly Terry Hobbs. The timeline of the evening, things he said, behavior he exhibited, it's not even a question at this point. And he'll never ever be held accountable.

The whole thing was a clown show. Did the 3 do it? Who knows. Celebrities got involved and who's to say how much their influence swayed people involved in the case. Probably the strongest case to not publicize court cases until after the fact.

I went to grad school in sociology at Berkeley & I met Dr. Richard Ofshe, who was one of the expert witnesses who testified about false confessions in the documentary. When I asked him about the movie, he actually did not like the documentary at all. He thought that the documentary was too arty & ambiguous in the sense that it actually held back about depicting how ridiculous the case was against West Memphis 3 & he thought the movie was made by a bunch of artsy Sundance types who just wanted to get critical clout by making a documentary about Arkansas "white trash." So I'm glad to hear that Patton concluded the kids were obviously innocent when he watched the movie for the first time.
Plot twist they did it.they had to pley guilty. To get out of jail.but the Metallica sound track is great.but seriously the doc had the crime scene videos. It was hardcore when it came out. This is a crazy American crime. Gave me nightmares for years.
@@regzzuse280 The whole story around this case was kids being targeted as being demon worshippers because they wore black metal shirts, so I don't see how it's that off base.
@@calebm9000 naw its cuz damien had disturbing beliefs..his state of mind and view of the world was very dark and even had delusions..it was his own history of mental health and violence toward children and animals that made him a suspect...even his own mind and mouth worked against him spewing all that stuff about he murder to the officer...
