When I woke up I was surrounded by my family and the doctor comes in all serious-like explaining what she saw and what her diagnosis is and I’m farting all throughout while my family is losing their minds (girls don’t fart in our family) and to the doctor’s credit, she never cracked a smile during our conversation. Colonoscopies… ugh

When I picked my dad up from the hospital after his first colonoscopy they had put all the patients recovering from theirs in one room. I walked in to get him and it was just a cacophony of farts. Nobody warned me. I managed to stutter out something like 'Oh...this seems like a fun room' and NOT burst out laughing. Proud moment for all involved.

When I got mine done, I was put under anesthesia and nearly two years later I still don’t know what happened during that procedure! It’s like the one big secret about you and only the hospital knows and ain’t telling, and pointing at you giggling!

I had my first at 40 due to strong family history of diverticulitis-I’m glad I have had 4 now, I eat good fiber and all the things I’m “supposed” to do but acute flare-ups land me in the ER upon occasion. Ugh. Love you, Paul ❤

Gotta correct you on the colonoscopy. It's not "If you're a man who's 50". It's if you're a human over 45 and only if you're at normal risk. If you've got a family history, you need to go in ten years earlier than the youngest relative with colon cancer. How do I know this much? Because I had stage 3c colon cancer at 30 years old!

Since colonoscopy can literally save your life(!), I think it's worth mentioning that what Paul Bettany actually described was being freaked out BEFORE the procedure, but having a grand old time in the recovery room! lol ; - D That was my experience as well. I was even awake for part of mine, but the drug cocktail they give you really does erase any nerves or embarrassment.

the best! after mine, I was driving home and discovered that they scented the air they used for expanding the colon with peppermint. the car smelled like it had one of those green tree fragrance things people hang on the rear view mirror. I was literally a human air freshener. My spouse who was driving, was not happy!

I'm sorry Mr. Bettany was bothered by his colonoscopy experience. And now I digress. It's not so very funny that the procedure is needless and proven harmful in many outcomes with perforation of bowel, infections, up to and including morbidity and mortality. When this goes the way of blood-letting, we will more routinely examine with noninvasive, less costly, and definitively better imaging from the outside. We have all the technology but the revenue cash-cow of coloscopy will continue to be inflicted on the healthy while actual medical need queues up to be milked rather than addressed with care. Please reconsider promoting colonoscopy, Seth.

As someone with a relative whose colon was removed due to cancer that was not caught early enough and now has to manage literal bags of feces attached to them for the rest of their life (but is thankfully ALIVE), please don't let a comment like the one above dissuade you from getting a potentially LIFE-SAVING procedure like a colonoscopy. It is simply NOT TRUE that colonoscopy is harmful in "many" cases, nor that imaging from the outside is "definitively" better. My personal preference is for colonscopy over CT colonography, but that's irrelevant. The best colon test is the one you have access to and will actually do since it can save your life!
